Sarah Ann Douglas (born January 25, 1944, in Asheville, North Carolina) is a distinguished computer scientist, known for her work in human-computer interaction (HCI), a field of computer science that she has helped pioneer, and, in particular, pointing devices and haptic interactions, WWW interfaces and bioinformatics, and visualization and visual interfaces. She is a Professor Emerita of Computer and Information Science [1] and a member of the Computational Science Institute [2] at the University of Oregon.

Sarah Douglas was born in Asheville, North Carolina. She lived in Bermuda and the Philippines, as well as in many states in the U.S. During her high school years in Palo Alto, California, she was recruited by the high school district to learn how to program a computer. She began her undergraduate career at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, on a full scholarship, transferred to University of California, Berkeley in her junior year, and graduated from UC Berkeley in 1966 with an A.B. degree in philosophy.
Upon her graduation from college she left the United States and lived in Europe for 18 months, settling in Majorca, Spain for much of that time. Upon returning to the United States, she worked as a professional programmer, systems analyst, Director of Software Development and Director at Computing Systems at Cabrillo College and San Jose State University in California. She returned to graduate school at Stanford University in 1979 and earned a Ph.D. in cognitive ergonomics (computer science, psychology, and engineering) from Stanford in 1983. During her tenure at Stanford, Douglas also served as a research intern at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (Xerox PARC). Upon her graduation from Stanford, she joined the faculty of the Department of Computer and Information Science Department at the University of Oregon, where she remained until her retirement in 2011. At Oregon, Douglas was a member of the Cognitive and Decision Sciences Institute(Director, 1995–1998) and led the technology team that conceived of and built the Zebrafish Information Network, an international online multimedia database of information for zebrafish researchers. [3] [4] She is the author of over 70 technical papers and a research monograph, The Ergonomics of Pointing Devices; [5] her work has been highly cited. [6]
Douglas served on the editorial board of the journal Interacting with Computers (1996–2005), [7] and as a reviewer for ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction and the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. At the national level she was the Chair of the Human-Computer Interaction Knowledge Focus Group for the IEEE-ACM Computing Curriculum 2001. [8]
Douglas was the recipient of grants and awards from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Fund for the Improvement of Post- Secondary Education, Computer Research Association, Keck Foundation, US West, Apple Computer, and Intel Corp. [9]
Professor Douglas was elected to the European Academy of Sciences in 2002. She was chair of the Human-Computer Interaction Knowledge Focus Group for the ACM-IEEE Curriculum 2001. [10] She was appointed to Human Sciences Special Editorial Board of the British Computer Society journal Interacting with Computers in 1996. [11] Douglas was chosen for the Charles Johnson Memorial Award for "exceptional service to the university and the community" by the University of Oregon Faculty in June 1995. She received an NSF/CRA Distributed Mentor award (Summer 1994), an EDUCOM 1992 Distinguished Natural Science Curriculum Award and was appointed to Fulbright lectureship in India during 1991–1992. Douglas Carl Engelbart was an American engineer, inventor, and a pioneer in many aspects of computer science. He is best known for his work on founding the field of human–computer interaction, particularly while at his Augmentation Research Center Lab in SRI International, which resulted in creation of the computer mouse, and the development of hypertext, networked computers, and precursors to graphical user interfaces. These were demonstrated at The Mother of All Demos in 1968. Engelbart's law, the observation that the intrinsic rate of human performance is exponential, is named after him.

Stuart K. Card is an American researcher and retired senior research fellow at Xerox PARC. He is considered to be one of the pioneers of applying human factors in human–computer interaction. With Jock D. Mackinlay, George G. Robertson and others he invented a number of information visualization techniques. He holds numerous patents in user interfaces and visual analysis.
Richard Farris Rashid is the founder of Microsoft Research, which he created in 1991. Between 1991 and 2013, as its chief research officer and director, he oversaw the worldwide operations for Microsoft Research which grew to encompass more than 850 researchers and a dozen labs around the world.

Patrick M. Hanrahan is an American computer graphics researcher, the Canon USA Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering in the Computer Graphics Laboratory at Stanford University. His research focuses on rendering algorithms, graphics processing units, as well as scientific illustration and visualization. He has received numerous awards, including the 2019 Turing Award.
Paul Dourish is a computer scientist best known for his work and research at the intersection of computer science and social science. Born in Scotland, he holds the Steckler Endowed Chair of Information and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine, where he joined the faculty in 2000, and where he directs the Steckler Center for Responsible, Ethical, and Accessible Technology. He is a Fellow of the AAAS, the ACM, and the BCS, and is a two-time winner of the ACM CSCW "Lasting Impact" award, in 2016 and 2021.
Jock D. Mackinlay is an American information visualization expert and Vice President of Research and Design at Tableau Software. With Stuart Card, George G. Robertson and others he invented a number of information visualization techniques.
Elizabeth D. "Beth" Mynatt is the Dean of the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University. She is former executive director of the Institute for People and Technology, director of the GVU Center at Georgia Tech, and Regents' and Distinguished Professor in the School of Interactive Computing, all at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
John Thomas Stasko III is a Regents Professor in the School of Interactive Computing in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech, where he joined the faculty in 1989. He also is one of the founding members of the Graphics, Visualization, and Usability (GVU) Center there. Stasko is best known for his extensive research in information visualization and visual analytics, including his earlier work in software visualization and algorithm animation.
Marilyn Mantei Tremaine is an American computer scientist. She is an expert in human–computer interaction and considered a pioneer of the field.
Victoria Bellotti is a Senior CI researcher in the Member Experience Team at Netflix. Previously, she was a user experience manager for growth at Lyft and a research fellow at the Palo Alto Research Center. She is known for her work in the area of personal information management and task management, but from 2010 to 2018 she began researching context-aware peer-to-peer transaction partner matching and motivations for using peer-to-peer marketplaces which led to her joining Lyft. Victoria also serves as an adjunct professor in the Jack Baskin School of Engineering at University of California Santa Cruz, on the editorial board of the Personal and Ubiquitous Computing and as an associate editor for the International Journal of HCI. She is a researcher in the Human–computer interaction community. Wendy Elizabeth Mackay is a Canadian researcher specializing in human-computer interaction. She has served in all of the roles on the SIGCHI committee, including Chair. She is a member of the CHI Academy and a recipient of a European Research Council Advanced grant. She has been a visiting professor in Stanford University between 2010 and 2012, and received the ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Service Award in 2014.
Joëlle Coutaz is a French computer scientist, specializing in human-computer interaction (HCI). Her career includes research in the fields of operating systems and HCI, as well as being a professor at the University of Grenoble. Coutaz is considered a pioneer in HCI in France, and in 2007, she was awarded membership to SIGCHI. She was also involved in organizing CHI conferences and was a member on the editorial board of ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction.
Lisa Anthony is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) at the University of Florida. She is also the director of the Intelligent Natural Interaction Technology Laboratory. Her research interests revolve around developing natural user interfaces to allow for greater human-computer interaction, specifically for children as they develop their cognitive and physical abilities.
Pearl Pu is a Chinese-born Swiss computer scientist. After completing her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, she obtained the Research Initiation Award from NSF before moving to Switzerland. She has been a faculty member and senior scientist at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, where she founded the Human-Computer Interaction Group in 2000. In 1997, she co-founded the company, Iconomic Systems SA, known for the development of an agent-based paradigm for travel e-commerce and was chairperson until its sale to i:FAO in 2001. She spent 6 months each as visiting scholar at Stanford University in 2001 and at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2010.
