Sarah Carli (born 5 September 1994) is an Australian track and field athlete who specializes in the 400 metres hurdles. [2] Representing Australia at the 2019 World Athletics Championships, she reached the semi-finals in women's 400 metres hurdles. [3]
Carli qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics but was eliminated after finishing fifth in her heat of the women's 400m hurdles in 56:93 secs. [4]
Carli was aged eight when she joined Wollongong City Little Athletics with her sister. She has been running ever since.
When Carli was 16 years of age, in December 2010, she won the Australian Schools 400m hurdles in time of 60.52. At the 2011 Australian championships she was placed second and secured selection for the World Youth Championships. At the championships she came second in the final clocking 58.05 seconds which was the fifth fastest in Australian junior history. [5]
At the 2019 Canberra Track Classic Carli ran a 55.67, a 1.2 seconds personal best This also made her a Doha World Championships qualifier. Carli's win handed the first defeat in eight years to one of the greats of Australian 400m hurdling - Lauren Boden. She went on to be placed second Oceania Championships. [5]
Carli continued to train in Wollongong and in her first hurdles of the season in December 2020 she ran a personal best of 55.09 and moved up to be the fourth fastest Australian of all time.
In February 2021, Carli had a serious accident in the gym, severing the carotid artery in her neck when she slipped while lifting weights. Doctors performed emergency surgery using a vein from her thigh to repair it. Recovery was slow, but she resumed racing and in June 2021 she ran 58.53 qualifying her for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. [5]

The 400 metres hurdles is a track and field hurdling event. The event has been on the Olympic athletics programme since 1900 for men and since 1984 for women.
The 400 metres, or 400-meter dash, is a sprint event in track and field competitions. It has been featured in the athletics programme at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1964 for women. On a standard outdoor running track, it is one lap around the track. Runners start in staggered positions and race in separate lanes for the entire course. In many countries, athletes previously competed in the 440-yard dash (402.336 m)—which is a quarter of a mile and was referred to as the "quarter-mile"—instead of the 400 m (437.445 yards), though this distance is now obsolete.
Amantle Montsho is a female sprinter from Botswana who specializes in the 400 metres. She represented her country at the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics, reaching the final at the latter edition. She was the first woman to represent Botswana at the Olympics. She has also competed at the World Championships in Athletics and the IAAF World Indoor Championships, and is the former World Champion over the 400m, winning in a personal best time of 49.56 in Daegu.
Anna Vasylivna Ryzhykova, nee Yaroshchuk is a Ukrainian track and field athlete who specialises in the 400 metres hurdles. At the European Athletics Championships, she won silver medals in 2012 and 2018, and bronze in 2022. Ryzhykova placed fifth at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Shaunae Miller-Uibo is a Bahamian track and field sprinter who competes in the 200 and 400 metres. She is a two-time Olympic champion after winning the women's 400 metres at the 2016 Rio Olympics and again at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Dalilah Muhammad is an American track and field athlete who specializes in the 400 meters hurdles. She is the 2016 Rio Olympics champion and 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, becoming at the latter the then-second-fastest woman of all time in the event with her personal best of 51.58 seconds. Muhammad was second at both the 2013 and 2017 World Championships to take her first gold in 2019, setting the former world record of 52.16 s. She was the second female 400 m hurdler in history, after Sally Gunnell, to have won the Olympic, World titles and broken the world record. At both the 2019 World Championships and Tokyo Games, she also took gold as part of women's 4 × 400 metres relay team.
Selvagowry Retchakan-Müller, is an English former track and field athlete who competed in the 400 metres hurdles. She represented Great Britain at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, and won silver medals at the 1992 IAAF World Cup and the 1998 Commonwealth Games. She won five AAA Championships titles and two UK Championship titles. She was ranked in the world's top ten at 400 metres hurdles in both 1991 and 1992.
Janieve Russell is a Jamaican track and field athlete who competes mainly in the 400 metres hurdles and the 400 metres sprint. She won an Olympic bronze medal in the 4 × 400 m relay in Tokyo 2021, where she also finished fourth in the 400m hurdles final in a personal best of 53.08 secs. She is a four-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist, winning the 400m hurdles title in 2018 and 2022, and the 4 × 400 m relay in 2014 and 2018. Harrison held the world record in the women's 100 metres hurdles with a time of 12.20 seconds, set on July 22, 2016 at the London Müller Anniversary Games, breaking the previous world record of 12.21 seconds achieved nearly 28 years earlier by Bulgarian athlete Yordanka Donkova.
Salwa Eid Naser is a Nigerian-born Bahraini sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres. She was the 2019 World champion with the third fastest time in history of 48.14 seconds, becoming the youngest-ever champion in the event and also the first woman representing an Asian nation to win that event at a World Championships. The mark places her only behind contested results of Marita Koch and Jarmila Kratochvílová. Over the distance, at only 19, Naser was the 2017 World silver medallist. She has also won, as a member of the Bahraini mixed-gender 4x400 m relay team, the 2019 World Championships bronze medal.
Aliyah Abrams is a Guyanese sprinter specialising in the 400 metres. She placed fifth in the women's 400m at the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
Margaret Vanessa Barrie is a Sierra Leonean sprinter. She competed in the women's 400 metres at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics. In 2019, she competed in the women's 200 metres and women's 4 × 400 metres relay at the 2019 African Games held in Rabat, Morocco.

The women's 400 metres hurdles at the 2024 Summer Olympics was held in four rounds at the Stade de France in Paris, France, from 4 to 8 August 2024. This was the eleventh time that the women's 400 metres hurdles was contested at the Summer Olympics. A total of 40 athletes were able to qualify for the event by entry standard or ranking.
