In 2019, Dessen was involved in a public controversy after she criticized a graduate student who had opposed a book of hers in a university reading program. Two of her books were adapted into the 2003 film How to Deal.

Emily Windsnap is a series of children's fantasy novels written by British author Liz Kessler, inaugurated by The Tail of Emily Windsnap in 2003 and continuing as of 2020.
