Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi (born 15 July 1974) [1] is a Ugandan politician and educationist who is the woman representative for Kisoro District, [1] and Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development appointed in 2021 by the President Yoweri Museveni in the Ugandan 11th Parliament.

Early life and education

Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi was born in the Chahi subcounty, Kisoro District in the Kigezi region to Philemon Mateke and Joy Rwanfizi Mateka. She is the third born of six in the family. Her father was a politician, a former State Minister for regional affairs and the mother was a professional teacher. [2]

Nyirabashitsi attended Seseme Integrate School then Maryhill High School for her secondary education. She joined Bugema University and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. [1] She also holds a Master's degree in Public Health from the same University and a Postgraduate diploma in Public Administration and Management from Uganda Christian University. [2] [3]

Career

Nyirabashitsi entered her family's businesses including timber production and transportation. [1] She is the founder of Nyirabashitsi Foundation where she supports children to join boarding secondary schools from senior one to senior six. [4] She is the chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Metropolitan International University, Makerere Metropolitan Management Institute, Kampala. [5]

Nyirabashitsi joined the public service as Assistant Town clerk of Kisoro town council. In 2021, she contested the role of woman member of parliament of Kisoro District and won against incumbent Rose Kabagyeni. [1] Nyirabashitsi was appointed Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development (Children and Youth Affairs) replacing Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi. [5] She is affiliated to the National Resistance Movement. [6]

Philemon Mateke, is a Ugandan politician. He is the current Minister of State for Regional Affairs in the Ugandan Cabinet. He was appointed to that position on 1 March 2015, replacing Asuman Kiyingi, who was appointed State Minister of Works. On account of his cabinet post, he is an Ex-Officio Member of Parliament. He is also the first and current Chancellor of Metropolitan International University, Kisoro.

She was also the National Resistance Movement member.

Mary Paula Kebirungi Turyahikayo also known as Turyahikayo Kebirungi Mary Paula is a Ugandan politician and Social Scientist. She is the former woman Member of Parliament representative for Rubabo County, Rukungiri District under the National Resistance Movement political party ticket. She was the aspirant for 2021-2026 Mp for Rubabo county but lost the election with only 20,287 votes.

Kwizera Eudia was a Ugandan politician and social worker. A member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, she served in the eighth Parliament of Uganda representing Kisoro District.

Nayiga Florence Ssekabira is a Ugandan female politician, former State Minister for PWDs and Women Member of Parliament of Kayunga district in the eighth parliament on National Resistance Movement (NRM) political party ticket.

Phiona Nyamutoro is a Ugandan politician and legislator representing the Youth in the parliament of Uganda, she is the National female youth Member of parliament in the parliament of Uganda. She is a member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) on whose ticket she got to parliament. She is also the current Minister of state for Minerals in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals Development, to which she was appointed on 22 March 2024.
