Sauniere was a self-unloading bulk carrier operated by Algoma Central. Laid down as Bulknes, before launching the vessel's name was changed to Brooknes. The ship was constructed and completed in 1970. The ship was initially owned by the Swedish company Kristian Jebsens Rederi A/S. In 1974, Algoma Central purchased the vessel, registered the ship in West Germany and renamed it Algosea. Algoma Central sent the ship to Swan Hunter in England to be lengthened. Emerging in 1976, Algosea sailed for Canada for conversion to a self-unloading bulk carrier at Herb Fraser and Associates in Port Colborne, Ontario. Algosea, which transported road salt between ports in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Saint Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes suffered three collisions and two groundings during its career. The Algosea was renamed Sauniere in 1982 and continued in service until 2009 when the bulk carrier was sold for scrap and broken up in Turkey in 2010.

Description

The ship as constructed was 158.6 m (520 ft 4 in) long overall and 151.7 m (497 ft 8 in) between perpendiculars with a beam of 22.9 m (75 ft 2 in). Brooknes had a gross register tonnage (GRT) of 13,098 and a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 21,200. [1] The ship had a molded depth of 12.80 m (42 ft 0 in) and had six hatches for six holds. The bulk carrier was equipped with six Velle-type 12-tonne (12-long-ton; 13-short-ton) derricks with one pair forward facing, the other aft. Brooknes was initially powered by two Helsingor Skibs & Msk. 8-cylinder diesel engines rated at 8,800 brake horsepower (6,562 kW). The engines powered one shaft turning a 4-bladed controllable pitch propeller and a 600 hp (450 kW) bow thruster. [2] The ship had a maximum speed of 15 knots (28 km/h; 17 mph). [1]

In 1975, the vessel was lengthened to 195.9 m (642 ft 9 in) overall and the ship's tonnage increased to 16,709 GRT and 24,481 DWT. [1] Brooknes was given an additional hold, had its derricks removed, and given self-unloading equipment. The self-unloading equipment was composed of a stern-mounted 75-metre (245 ft) discharge boom that could discharge at 3,810 metric tons (3,750 long tons) per hour. In 1981, the ship was re-engined with two MaK 6M552AK 6-cylinder diesel engines rated at 8,800 bhp (6,562 kW). [2]

Construction and career

Algoma Central ordered the ship from Lithgows Ltd. by Kristian Jebsens Rederi A/S and was laid down on 20 January 1970 at their yard in Glasgow, Scotland with the yard number 1170. [1] Laid down as Bulknes, the ship was renamed Brooknes before launching. [2] The ship was launched on 2 September 1970 and completed on 18 December 1970. Brooknes was registered in Hamburg, Germany. [1] In 1973, Langra Schiffahrtsges GmbH and Company KG took over operations of the vessel while ownership remained with Kristian Jebsens Rederi A/S. [2]

In 1974, Algoma Central sought a replacement vessel for Roy A. Jodrey which had sunk on 21 November. On 1 January 1976, Algoma Central purchased Brooknes for US$7.5 million. Algoma Central renamed the vessel Algosea and sent it to Swan Hunter's yard at North Shields, England to be lengthened. Emerging in 1976, Algosea then crossed the Atlantic Ocean to undergo conversion to a self-discharging bulk carrier at Herb Fraser and Associates at their yard in Port Colborne, Ontario. While moving through the Welland Canal, Algosea had its first collision, hitting the canal wall at Lock 1, losing its cables and being blown across Lock 2. Algosea entered active service on 19 October 1976. Algosea's primary cargo was road salt. Algosea delivered its cargo along the eastern North American seaboard as far south as the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Saint Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes. [2]

Algosea suffered internal damage during a storm in 1976. After experiencing issues with the engines of Algosea, Algoma Central ordered the ship to be re-engined at Halifax, Nova Scotia in late-1981, early 1982. In 1982, Algosea was chartered to Navigation Sonamar and operated by the Societe Québécoise d'Exploration Minière (SOQUEM) to transport salt from the Magdalen Islands to ports along the North American east coast, the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway. On 6 June 1982, Algosea collided with a pier at Port Weller, Ontario. The ship's bow was extensively damaged, and the ship was forced to sail to Port Arthur Shipbuilding to have its bow replaced. The new bow was ice-strengthened and the ship returned to service in August re-flagged to Quebec City, Quebec and renamed Sauniere, which is French for "salter". [2]

On 26 April 1984, Sauniere ran aground in the St. Lawrence River near Trois-Rivières, Quebec. The ship suffered no damage and continued on to Baltimore, Maryland to pick up its next cargo. [2] In December 1985 unionized longshoremen in Providence, Rhode Island picketed Sauniere because it unloaded rock salt without union help. [3] [4] On 15 December 1995, the ship ran aground at Fairport, Ohio, again without damage. On 15 September 1996, Sauniere grounded on Bay State Shoal in the St. Lawrence River near Brockville, Ontario. The bottom shell plating on the starboard side was damaged and the #1 starboard ballast tank being was holed in three places. After being freed, Sauniere sailed to Hamilton, Ontario to unload its cargo and then to Port Weller Dry Docks at St. Catharines, Ontario for repairs. [2]

Sauniere underwent a major refit in late 1998, early 1999, followed by an even larger one in late 2001 and early 2002. On 21 September 2006, the ship lost its starboard anchor near Grande Entrée [ broken anchor ], Magdalen Islands. On 18 September 2007, the ship collided with the south sea wall of the Canso Causeway. The vessel suffered a dent above the waterline outside the #1 portside tank. A crack was discovered in the forepeak in January 2009 that necessitated immediate repairs. On 1 March 2009, the ship was laid up at Montreal, Quebec. [2] Sauniere was sold to Avsar GS in 2011, towed to Aliağa, Turkey and broken up with demolition listed as complete on 2 July 2011. [1] [5]

MV <i>Algoma Mariner</i>

Algoma Mariner is a Canadian lake freighter delivered to Algoma Central on 31 May 2011. The bulk carrier was the first new Canadian-flagged vessel on the Great Lakes in 25 years. Algoma Mariner is a Seawaymax vessel, designed to carry dry bulk through the Saint Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes. The vessel was constructed at the Chengxi Shipyard in China and is currently in service.

MV <i>Tim S. Dool</i>

MV Tim S. Dool is an Algoma Central-owned seawaymax lake freighter built in 1967, by the Saint John Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. in Saint John, New Brunswick. She initially entered service as Senneville when she sailed as part of the fleet of Mohawk Navigation Company. Senneville was the second lake freighter constructed with a single superstructure at the stern. In 1981, the ship was sold to Pioneer Shipping. That company sold the vessel to Algoma Central in 1994 who renamed the ship Algoville. The bulk carrier got her current name in 2008. Tim S. Dool is currently in active service on the Great Lakes of North America.

MV <i>Algonorth</i>

MV Algonorth was a Seawaymax lake freighter built in 1970 and completed in 1971 by the Govan Division of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders Ltd. in Govan, Scotland as the bulk carrier Temple Bar. Her original owners were Lambert Bros. Shipping Ltd., of London, United Kingdom, sold the vessel in 1976 to Nipigon Transport Ltd., who had her hull lengthened and installed a new power plant for Great Lakes service. Re-entering service as Lake Nipigon, the ship was renamed Laketon in 1984 before returning to the name Lake Nipigon in 1986. In 1987, the lake freighter was sold to Algoma Central Railway which gave the ship its final named, Algonorth. In 2007, the ship collided with a dock in Toledo, Ohio. The ship was scrapped in 2012.

<i>Algoma Equinox</i>

Algoma Equinox is a lake freighter and lead ship of her class built for Algoma Central, a Canadian shipping company. The vessel was built to a new design by Nantong Mingde Heavy Industries at their shipyard in Tongzhou, China in 2013. The ship entered service in December 2013, operating in the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway.

<i>MV Algorail</i> 1968 Canadian freighter

Algorail was a lake freighter owned and operated by Algoma Central. The ship was built by Collingwood Shipyards in Collingwood, Ontario and was launched in 1967. The ship sailed on the North American Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence Seaway delivering coal/coke, aggregates, slag, iron ore/oxides, salt, fertilizers, grain products, gypsum, quartzite, or sand. The ship was laid up in 2016 and sold for scrap in 2018.

<i>John B. Aird</i> (ship)

John B. Aird was a self-discharging lake freighter/bulk carrier that was launched in 1983 and served on the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway until 2017. The vessel was owned and operated by Algoma Central during that time, which had named the vessel for a former chairman of the Algoma Central Railway. Prior to the construction of Algoma Equinox in 2013, John B. Aird was the last vessel built for the company.

<i>English River</i> (ship) Canadian lake freighter and bulk carrier, launched in 1961

English River was a lake freighter and bulk carrier, launched in 1961 by Collingwood Shipyards of Collingwood, Ontario. In her initial years she carried bulk cargoes and deck cargoes to smaller ports on the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence River watershed and estuary. In 1973, the vessel was converted into a cement carrier and carried mainly raw cement for the construction industry. The ship continued to operate until English River was removed from service and sold for scrap.

<i>Algolake</i> Self-unloading bulk carrier

Algolake was a self-unloading bulk carrier owned and operated by Algoma Central. The ship entered service in 1977 on the Saint Lawrence Seaway. In 1994, the ship ran aground in the St. Lawrence River off Quebec. The ship was laid up for scrapping in 2018, renamed Gola and was later scrapped in Aliağa, Turkey.

<i>Thunder Bay</i> (ship)

Thunder Bay is a Trillium-class lake freighter cargo vessel, built and launched in China in 2013. The ship is owned, and operated on the Great Lakes, by the Canada Steamship Lines (CSL). Like her three sister ships in CSL's Trillium class, Baie St. Paul, Baie Comeau, and Whitefish Bay, the vessel is a self-unloading bulk carrier, with a conveyor belt on a long boom that can be deployed over port or starboard sides.

<i>Algoma Progress</i>

Algoma Progress was a self-unloading lake freighter and bulk carrier operating on the North American Great Lakes, owned by Algoma Central. Launched in 1968, the ship was originally named Canadian Progress and operated by the Upper Lakes Shipping. At launch, the ship was the largest self-unloading vessel on the Great Lakes. Canadian Progress was used to transport coal, iron ore, barley and road salt on the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway. Canadian Progress ran aground twice, the first in 1985 and then again in 1988. In 2011, Upper Lakes Shipping sold its entire fleet to Algoma Central, which renamed the vessel Algoma Progress. In 2014, Algoma Progress was sold for scrap and broken up at Port Colborne, Ontario.

<i>Algoma Compass</i>

Algoma Compass, formerly Roger M. Kyes and Adam E. Cornelius, is a self-unloading bulk carrier built in Toledo, Ohio in 1973 for the American Steamship Company. The bulk carrier carried bulk cargoes throughout the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. The vessel has earned a reputation as a "hard luck" ship, experiencing mechanical failures and groundings. In 2018, the ship was acquired by Algoma Central and put in service as Algoma Compass.

Algoma Navigator was a Canadian bulk carrier operated by Algoma Central. Like other bulk carriers, her potential cargoes included: coal/coke, aggregates, slag, iron ore/oxides, salt, fertilizers, grain products, gypsum, quartzite, or sand. The vessel was constructed by John Readhead & Sons in the United Kingdom in 1967 for the Cambay Steamship Company and launched as Demeterton. The vessel was enlarged in 1967 and sold in 1975 to the Upper Lakes Group which renamed the ship St. Lawrence Navigator. In 1979, the vessel was renamed Canadian Navigator after a rebuild. In 2011, the ship was sold to Algoma and became Algoma Navigator. In 2016, the bulk carrier was renamed Navi before being sold for scrap and broken up in 2016.

<i>Algosteel</i> Former lake freighter

Algosteel was a bulk carrier owned and operated by Algoma Central. The vessel was constructed in 1966 by Davie Shipbuilding at their yard in Lauzon, Quebec for Canada Steamship Lines and launched as A.S. Glossbrenner. In 1968, the vessel was acquired by the Labrador Steamship Company. In 1971, the ship was sold to Algoma Central. The vessel's name was changed to Algogulf in 1987 and to Algosteel in 1990. The bulk carrier primarily transported iron ore and grain along the Saint Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes. The vessel was taken out of service in April 2018 pending disposal and was scrapped in Aliağa, Turkey, in 2018 under the name Oste.

Algogulf was the third and last name of a bulk carrier launched in 1961, laid-up in 1999, and scrapped in 2002. The ship began her career in 1961 as J.N. McWatters, the second vessel of that name operated by the Misener Shipping Company. The bulk carrier was used to transport primarily grain and iron ore in the Saint Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes. In 1991, the vessel was renamed Scott Misener by the company, the fourth of that name. In 1994, the ship was acquired by Algoma Central and renamed Algogulf, the second vessel of the name. The ship was laid up in 1999 and sold for scrapping in 2002.

<i>Radcliffe R. Latimer</i>

Radcliffe R. Latimer is a lake freighter launched in 1978. The vessel is owned by Algoma Central but operated under charter to Canada Steamship Lines from 1994 to 1997. As Algobay, the bulk carrier was involved in a collision with another lake freighter in 1980. In 2009 the vessel was rebuilt in China for service in the Caribbean Sea. The vessel is currently in service.

Roy A. Jodrey was a bulk carrier owned by Algoma Central Railway. Named in honour of Roy A. Jodrey who was a director and shareholder of the company, the ship was launched and entered service in 1965, one of four ships constructed for the company to access ports on the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway too small for use by the larger lake freighters. On 20 November 1974, Roy A. Jodrey struck Pullman Shoal in the St. Lawrence River in Alexandria Bay, New York. The vessel made it to the United States Coast Guard Station at Wellesley Island and tied up. At 03:00, the bulk carrier sank in 77 metres (254 ft) of water, with its entire crew reaching safety. No attempt to salvage the ship was made, but Algoma did try to salvage the vessel's cargo of iron ore, which led to the death of a diver. Roy A. Jodrey became a technical scuba diving site, whose difficulty has led to the deaths of several divers who have attempted it.

<i>Algosoo</i> (1974 ship)

Algosoo was a lake freighter constructed for Algoma Central in 1974 by Collingwood Shipbuilding in Collingwood, Ontario. The second ship of the name, Algosoo was the last lake freighter built in the traditional design for use on the North American Great Lakes, where the bridge topped a superstructure right in the ship's bow, and a second superstructure topped her engines, right in the stern. The vessel was used to transport bulk cargoes between ports on the Great Lakes. In 1986, the ship suffered a serious fire and 1994, was forced to run aground. Algosoo transported her last cargo in late 2015 and was sailed to the breaking yard at Port Colborne, Ontario in October 2016.

Algoma Sault, which entered service in 2018, is the third freighter Algoma Central named after Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. She is a self-unloading bulk carrier, built for carrying cargoes like ore, grain, or coal, on the North American Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. She is the seventh vessel of the Equinox class, and like her sister ships she was built in China.
