The Scania Fencer is an range of full-size buses produced by Scania and bodied by Higer Bus which was launched initially in the United Kingdom in 2021. The Fencer is planned to be offered in single deck (f1), coach (f6) and articulated (f18) variants with options for diesel, hybrid, biogas and electric drivetrains.^[2]

Variants

Fencer f1

The single-decker Fencer f1 was the first of the Fencer range produced by Scania, with regular production of the Fencer f1 beginning in 2022; double-deck, tri-axle, articulated and coach variants have been confirmed to follow.^[3]^[4] Scania also plans to build the Fencer to Transport for London specification and are also considering allowing other bodybuilders to body the Fencer chassis.^[1]

A 12 m (39 ft) diesel single-decker Fencer f1 was sold to PC Coaches of Lincoln in 2021, following use as a Scania demonstrator.^[5] A shorter 10.9 m (36 ft) demonstrator for the United Kingdom market with a Scania DC07 engine was expected to be delivered in late 2022,^[6]^[7] while a battery-electric variant is also planned to be launched in early 2025, having been delayed due to the production of a new electric driveline featuring battery cells produced by Northvolt.^[8]

Q-Park Heathrow Airport were the first operator in the United Kingdom to place an order for the Fencer f1, ordering eleven 10.9 m (36 ft) Fencer f1s with DC07 engines on the new integral chassis, specified for airport bus services with air conditioning and luggage racking.^[9] The first two Fencers from this order entered service in November 2022.^[10] A further five Fencer f1s on Scania K280CB chassis were delivered to Ambassador Travel of Great Yarmouth and Passenger Plus of Tadworth in March 2023,^[11]^: 72^: 78 later joined by a single delivery on the K280LB chassis for Moving People of Oswaldtwistle in July 2023.^[12]

Estonian bus operator GoBus were the first continental European operator to order the Fencer f1, taking delivery of 24 CNG-fuelled examples, four of which entered service in Harju County in December 2021 and the remaining 20 entering service in Narva in June 2022.^[13]^[14] 26 more Fencers have been ordered for delivery in 2022.^[15]^{[ needs update ]}

A single Fencer f1 built on a battery electric bus chassis entered service with Santiago de Chile bus operator Voy Santiago S.A. in May 2023 for trial services in the city.^[16]^[17]^{[ better source needed ]}

Fencer f6

In November 2021, Scania France took delivery of the first Fencer f6 school coach, built exclusively for use on French school bus networks with a capacity of up to 63 seats as well as four wheelchair spaces. The f6 can be built on either a biodiesel or biogas powertrain, the latter of which increases the height of the coach to 3.60 metres (11.8 ft) compared to 3.31 metres (10.9 ft) for the biodisel coach, as the biogas canisters are stored on the roof. 50 orders for the Fencer f6 have been placed, with delivery of the first examples expected to take place in June 2022.^[18]^[19]

Fencer f9

A battery-electric double-decker Fencer named the Fencer f9 was among the variants announced at the launch of the Fencer range. However, as a result of Scania refocusing European chassis manufacturing towards low-entry buses as opposed to low-floor buses, the f9 was cancelled in 2024.^[8]

In 2014, the Enviro400 was succeeded by the updated Alexander Dennis Enviro400 MMC and production of the classic Enviro400 ceased in 2018.

Stagecoach West is a bus operator providing services in Gloucestershire, Bristol, Swindon, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, North Somerset and Herefordshire, in the West of England. The company is a subsidiary of the Stagecoach Group.

The Scania K series is a series of chassis in Scania's city bus and coach range with longitudinally, straight-up mounted engine at the rear, replacing the K- and L-type (L94) chassis of the 4 series. The K series was first presented on Busworld 2005 in Kortrijk, Belgium, and models were available from 2006.

The Wright Endurance was a step-entrance single-decker bus body on Scania N113 and on Volvo B10B chassis by Wrightbus between 1992 and 1997.

The Wright StreetDeck is an integral double-decker bus manufactured by Wrightbus since 2014, originally delivered as standard with a Daimler OM934 diesel engine. Hybrid-electric, full-electric and hydrogen-powered variants have subsequently been produced. Production of the StreetDeck range was briefly suspended when Wrightbus entered administration in September 2019.

Gemilang Coachwork Sdn Bhd (GML) is a manufacturer of commercial vehicles and not limited to buses and coaches. Based in Malaysia, GML specialises in designing and manufacturing bus bodies and the assembly of buses. GML is also one of the first companies in Malaysia to assemble fully electric buses.

The MCV EvoSeti is a low-floor double-decker bus body built by MCV Bus & Coach as a replacement for the MCV DD103. It was unveiled in May 2015.

The Alexander Dennis Enviro400 MMC is a low-floor double-decker bus produced by the British bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis since 2014, replacing the Alexander Dennis Enviro400. The Enviro400 MMC is produced at Alexander Dennis' Falkirk and Scarborough factories in the United Kingdom.

The MCV Evora is a single-decker bus bodywork produced by Manufacturing Commercial Vehicles (MCV) since 2018, as the successor to the MCV Evolution. The Evora is currently available on Volvo B8RLE and Volvo B5LH chassis.

The Alexander Dennis Enviro400 City is a low-floor double-decker bus produced by the British bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis since 2015, as an alternative to the standard Alexander Dennis Enviro400 MMC bodywork. The Enviro400 City is produced at Alexander Dennis' Falkirk and Scarborough factories in the United Kingdom. It is available as a complete integral diesel or hybrid bus, as well as the Enviro400EV complete integral battery electric bus or Scania N280UD compressed natural gas-powered chassis.

The Wright GB Kite is a range of full-size zero-emission single-deck buses manufactured by Wrightbus since 2022. Similar in body style to the diesel powered Wright GB Hawk, the GB Kite is an integral design that can be built as a battery electric vehicle, the Electroliner BEV, and as a fuel cell electric vehicle, the Hydroliner FCEV.

The Volvo BZL is a full-size zero-emission battery electric bus chassis for both single-decker buses and double-decker buses, manufactured by Volvo since 2021.

The Yutong E10, also sold as the longer Yutong E12, is a battery electric single-decker bus manufactured by Yutong in Zhengzhou since 2016 for both Chinese and international bus operators.

The Caetano City Gold is a series of low-floor, single-decker bus bodywork designs produced by Salvador Caetano since 1997. As of 2022, the City Gold has been launched with diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), hydrogen fuel cell and full electric powertrains.

The Yutong TCe12, sold as the Yutong ICe12 in continental Europe, is a battery electric coach manufactured by Yutong in Zhengzhou since 2017 for international bus and coach operators. It is based on the same technology used in the Yutong E10 battery-electric single-deck bus, having a maximum all-electric range of 200 miles, and can be configured as a school bus.

The Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV is a battery electric double-decker bus produced by the British bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis in partnership with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD Auto since 2018. Based on its Alexander Dennis Enviro400 City body, which was launched in 2015 to compete with the hybrid electric New Routemaster, the Enviro400EV is produced at Alexander Dennis' Falkirk and Scarborough factories in the United Kingdom, with production of the type at the company's Larbert headquarters set to also commence in mid-2023. The Enviro400EV is available both as a complete integral battery electric bus and as a battery electric bus body on a BYD K series chassis, as well the integral Enviro400FCEV fuel cell bus.

The Alexander Dennis Enviro200EV is a battery electric single-deck bus produced by the British bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis in partnership with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD Auto since 2015. An electric variant of the diesel integral Alexander Dennis Enviro200 MMC, which had been launched that same year to replace the outgoing Enviro200 and Enviro300, the Enviro200EV utilises BYD's own 12 m chassis and drivetrain and has a range of up to 160 miles with a recharge time of 3.5 hours. A shorter 10.8 m variant was subsequently added to the range in 2016.
