Tesla is an American rock band from Sacramento, California. In late 1981, bassist Brian Wheat and guitarist Frank Hannon formed a band named City Kidd, which evolved into Tesla. By 1984, vocalist Jeff Keith, guitarist Tommy Skeoch, and drummer Troy Luccketta had joined the band, forming their classic lineup that appeared on all of the albums and live shows during their initial run. The band adopted the Tesla moniker shortly before recording their first album, as another band with a name similar to City Kidd already existed.

Year of the Spider is the third studio album by American rock band Cold. It was released on May 13, 2003, through Geffen Records. The album was Cold's most commercially successful, debuting at number three on the Billboard album charts, with over 101,000 copies sold in its first week. Early pressings of Year of the Spider were shipped with a DVD and a temporary tattoo of the Cold spider logo. The DVD included the making of the video for "Stupid Girl", fan testimonials, and some home video shot during the recording of the album. This is also the last album with guitarists Terry Balsamo and Kelly Hayes.

Samuel Alan McCandless is an American drummer who is best known as a founding member of the rock band Cold and the psychedelic blues band Carny. With McCandless, Cold has released five albums of which two have been RIAA Certified Gold and one RIAA Certified Platinum soundtrack album for A Walk to Remember. He left the band in 2015, leaving vocalist Scooter Ward as the only original member. However, he later rejoined the band full-time in 2019, but left in 2021, when Tony Kruszka stepped in.

De Pena, the band played in Los Angeles and San Francisco with several of their thrash metal peers such as Metallica, Exodus, and Slayer. "Stupid Girl" is a song by American rock band Cold and the lead single from their third major label album, Year of the Spider. It was the second song released for the album overall; "Gone Away" was released on the WWE Tough Enough 2 soundtrack while recognized as a Year of the Spider track a year prior to its release. "Stupid Girl" made its radio debut on March 18, 2003, and was the only Cold single to crack the Billboard Hot 100 staying on for 20 weeks and peaking at No. 87. The song, as well as its music video, were heavily played on MTV2 and Fuse TV throughout the several months following its release.

The album was produced by Jeremy Parker, who produced the previous album. This is Cold's first album since 2011's Superfiction. This is Cold's only album to include guitarist Nick Coyle and first to feature bassist Lindsay Manfredi and their first album not to include bass player Jeremy Marshall and the only album to not feature drummer Sam McCandless. Aaron Fulton was credited as the drummer.
