Scotline is a shipping group of companies with origins from 1979, [1] and specializing in transporting timber, wood pulp, forestry commodities on short sea operations, whilst also providing bulk, charter and special project work. [2] The area covered is around the British Isles, Baltic, and North-West Europe. [2] As of December 2021 [update] The company is operating 11 of its own vessels mostly in the 3000–5000dwt range, while also employing others on a time charter basis. [3]
Scotline was established in 1979, with the first cargo, a shipment of scotch spruce poles, being transported from Inverness, Scotland and Bremen, Germany. [4] This developed into a regular route between Inverness and Varberg, Sweden. [1]
Scotline purchased [lower-alpha 1] their first ship, the Hohebank, IMO number : 7720439 in 1977. [1] Additional operating bases were also established at Whitstable, Kent; and Goole, Yorkshire. [1]
In 1994 the Kent facility was changed to a 10 acre site at Rochester on the River Medway, supplemented by a further 14 acre facility nearby from 2011. [1] The head office was relocated from central London to Ronford, in Essex. [1] Scotline Terminal Goole, a separate independently run but associated stevedoring company, was forced to close in 2010 due to the imposition of backdated port rates. [6]
Scotline purchased their largest ship to date, the Scot Leader, the 4500dwt from Royal Bodewes Group in 2007. [2]
In 2017 Scotline increased their fleet of owned vessels to nine with the acquisition of the 3571dwt Scot Navigator, the decision being prompted by the success of a sister ship, the Lady Ariane, the ship being used on the Varburg– Gunness liner service. [1]
Scotline's next ship, the Scot Carrier , was similar to the 2007 Scot Leader from Royak Bodewes, with class 1B icebreaker certification for Baltic operations. [1] This was followed by three similar sister ships through to 2021, the later ones having 1A icebreaker classification and enclosed bridge wings. [7]
On 13 December 2021 the Scot Carrier was in collision between Ystad and Bornholm, with the smaller Danish vessel, the 180 feet (55 m)Karin Hoej, the latter capsizing with the body of one of its crew found dead and the other missing presumed drowned. [8]

The Northern Sea Route (NSR) is a shipping route about 5,600 kilometres (3,500 mi) long, defined by Russian legislation as running from the entrances to the Novaya Zemlya straits in the west, along the Russian Arctic coast above Siberia through the Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, East Siberian Sea, and Chukchi Sea), to Cape Zhelaniya on the Bering Strait, at parallel 66 ° N and meridian of 168 ° 58′37 ″ W.
MV Captain Kurbatskiy was a Russian SA-15 type cargo ship originally known as Nizhneyansk (Нижнеянск) after a port of the same name. The ship was delivered from Valmet Vuosaari shipyard in 1983 as the second ship of a series of 19 icebreaking multipurpose arctic freighters built by Valmet and Wärtsilä, another Finnish shipbuilder, for the Soviet Union for year-round service in the Northern Sea Route. These ships, designed to be capable of independent operation in arctic ice conditions, were of extremely robust design and had strengthened hulls resembling those of polar icebreakers.
Solway Lass is a two-masted schooner. She was built in the Netherlands in 1902 and is currently operated out of Airlie Beach, Australia as a holiday sailor in the Whitsunday Islands.
The Royal Portbury Dock is part of the Port of Bristol, in England. It is situated near the village of Portbury on the southern side of the mouth of the Avon, where the river joins the Severn estuary — the Avonmouth Docks are on the opposite side of the Avon, within Avonmouth. The deepwater dock was constructed between 1972 and 1977, and is now a major port for the import of motor vehicles into the UK. The M5 motorway runs nearby, and the huge car storage compounds around the dock are visible from the Avonmouth Bridge. A waste industrial area west of the port is being developed as the Portbury Ashlands Nature Reserve.
The JSC Admiralty Shipyards is one of the oldest and largest shipyards in Russia, located in Saint Petersburg. The shipyard's building ways can accommodate ships of up to 70,000 tonnes deadweight (DWT), 250 metres (820 ft) in length and 35 metres (115 ft) in width. Military products include naval warships such as nuclear and diesel-powered submarines and large auxiliaries.

Ice class refers to a notation assigned by a classification society or a national authority to denote the additional level of strengthening as well as other arrangements that enable a ship to navigate through sea ice. Some ice classes also have requirements for the ice-going performance of the vessel.
Magadan is a Russian icebreaker and the second vessel in a series of three subarctic icebreakers built at Wärtsilä Helsinki shipyard in Finland in 1982–1983. The vessel's sister ships are Mudyug and Dikson.
CCGS Captain Molly Kool is a Canadian Coast Guard converted medium class icebreaker. She was originally built as an icebreaking anchor handling tug Vidar Viking for Trans Viking Icebreaking & Offshore in 2001. The vessel was acquired by the Canadian Coast Guard in August 2018 and was commissioned in May of the next year after refit.
A double acting ship is a type of icebreaking ship designed to travel forwards in open water and thin ice, but turn around and proceed astern (backwards) in heavy ice conditions. In this way, the ship can operate independently in severe ice conditions without icebreaker assistance but retain better open water performance than traditional icebreaking vessels.
Arctech Helsinki Shipyard was a Finnish shipbuilding company that focused primarily on icebreakers and other icegoing vessels for arctic conditions.
SA-15 is the project name for a series of icebreaking multipurpose cargo ships built in Finland for the Soviet Union in the 1980s. The ships, capable of independent operation in all prevailing arctic ice conditions, were the first merchant vessels designed for year-round operations in the Northern Sea Route. For this purpose they have hulls that resemble those of polar icebreakers and propulsion systems capable of withstanding ice loads.
Vladimir Ignatyuk is a Russian icebreaking anchor handling tug supply vessel. She was built by Burrard-Yarrows Corporation in Canada in 1983 as Kalvik as part of an Arctic drilling system developed by BeauDril, the drilling subsidiary of Gulf Canada Resources. After the offshore oil exploration in the Beaufort Sea ended in the early 1990s, she was sold to the Canadian shipping company Fednav in 1997 and renamed Arctic Kalvik. In 2003, she was purchased by Murmansk Shipping Company and transferred to Russia.
MSV Botnica is a multipurpose offshore support vessel and icebreaker built by Finnyards in Rauma, Finland, in 1998. She was the newest and technically most advanced state-owned icebreaker of Finland until 2012, when she was sold to the Port of Tallinn for 50 million euro. Botnica is used as an escort icebreaker in the Baltic Sea during the winter months, but carries out subsea and offshore construction works worldwide during the open water season.
Algoma Navigator was a Canadian bulk carrier operated by Algoma Central. Like other bulk carriers, her potential cargoes included: coal/coke, aggregates, slag, iron ore/oxides, salt, fertilizers, grain products, gypsum, quartzite, or sand. The vessel was constructed by John Readhead & Sons in the United Kingdom in 1967 for the Cambay Steamship Company and launched as Demeterton. The vessel was enlarged in 1967 and sold in 1975 to the Upper Lakes Group which renamed the ship St. Lawrence Navigator. In 1979, the vessel was renamed Canadian Navigator after a rebuild. In 2011, the ship was sold to Algoma and became Algoma Navigator. In 2016, the bulk carrier was renamed Navi before being sold for scrap and broken up in 2016.
Project 21900 icebreakers and their derivative designs are a series of Russian diesel-electric icebreakers built in the 2000s. They are also sometimes referred to using the type size series designation LK-16.
The Goole Steam Shipping Company was a company based in Goole, England from 1864 to 1905 which operated steamship services from Goole to northern European ports.
Sibir is a Russian Project 22220 nuclear-powered icebreaker. Built by Baltic Shipyard in Saint Petersburg, the vessel was laid down in 2015, launched in 2017, and delivered in December 2021.
