Scream Loud!!! The Fenton Story is a garage rock compilation consisting of songs released by Fenton Records in Grand Rapids, Michigan and the assorted vanity labels that it had pressed and distributed for various regional acts, primarily from western Michigan in the 1960s, and is available on identical LP and CD formats.* [1] The set focuses on basic upbeat and rocking material, but includes a couple of odd and more eclectic expetions. [1] Fenton's founder was musician and entrepreneur Dave Kalmbach, who intended the label to be a place where un-established groups could have a place to record on either the Fenton label itself or on their own vanity labels, which were usually given special custom names chosen by the bands and their management, often under the arrangement that the bands would pay themselves for most of the recording and pressing costs, but receive a certain share in royalties. [1] Commenting on how these recordings more-or-less function as aural snapshots taken from the bygone scrapbook of a more innocent time, Stephen Thomas Earlewine commented:
The set begins with the snide "I'm Tempted", by Grand Rapids' the Quests, who are represented with three other numbers, including the collection's title cut, "Scream Loud", and the fuzz-driven "Shadows in the Night" (replete with its Beach Boys style falsetto harmonies) which should already be highly familiar to many garage aficionados, having been previously "comped" on Hit Records' Trash Box. [1] [2] Tonto and the Renegades from nearby Grand Ledge, are also represented by four songs, including the disc's sophomore track "Little Boy Blue", their-known song, as well as "I Knew This Thing Would Happen" and "The Easy Way Out", which provides the set with a horn-based counterpart to the set's customary "clang". [1] [3] In likewise fashion, The JuJus's own quartet of songs, is scattered throughout the disc, beginning with the doleful "I'm Really Sorry", as well as "You Treated Me Bad", then "Do You Understand Me" (which includes the incidental sound of crashing broken glass objects in the background), and finally "Hey Little Girl". [1] [4] The Mussies from South Haven are responsible for the feedback-saturated instrumental "12 O'Clock, July" and also their rendition of Paul Revere & the Raiders' "Louie Go Home". [1] [5] The 9th Street Market do a hypnotic "You're Gone" and the proudly insolent "I'm a Baby". [1] The Jades (Sparta, Michigan) are featured on several numbers, including "We Got Something Going" and "Please Come Back", as well as two topical songs critical of religion and convectional social mores: "Surface World" and "Confined Congregation." [1] [6] "Boy is Gone", is by Lyn & the Invaders and showcases Linda "Lyn"Nowicki on the compilation's only female vocal. [1] [7] The set contains two organ-drenched songs from Lansing's the Chancellors, "5 Minus 3" and "Dear John". [1] [8] The Assortment are represented by two songs, "First I Look At The Purse", and the punky "Bless Our Hippy Home". [1] The Plagues, from Lansing have several cuts such as "I've Been Through It Before" and "Through This World" and the Aardvarks from Muskegon have four including "I Don't Need You" and the "I'm Higher Than I'm Down". Pebbles, Volume 8 is a compilation album among the LPs in the Pebbles series. The music on this album has no relation to Pebbles, Volume 8 that was released on CD many years later.
Pebbles, Volume 11 is a compilation album among the LP's in the Pebbles series and has no relation to the Pebbles, Volume 11 CD that was released many years later. The cover was adapted and colorized for a later Pebbles double CD, Essential Pebbles, Volume 2.

The JuJus were an American garage rock band formed in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and active between 1964 and 1967. Though the group was never able to record an album they are considered one of the more polished acts to originate from the Michigan rock scene. Amid several line-up changes, The JuJus managed to blend influences of folk rock and The British Invasion into their raw musical style, before experimenting in the psychedelic rock genre. Their most acclaimed piece was the regional hit, "You Treat Me Bad", which is now deemed a garage rock classic.
Teenage Shutdown! You Treated Me Bad! is a compilation album featuring material by underground garage rock musical artists that recorded in the mid-1960s, and was previously available to only a handful of collectors. It is the second installment of the Teenage Shutdown! series and was released on Crypt Records on October 6, 1998.
Teenage Shutdown! Teen Jangler Blowout!, sometimes referred to as "Volume 9," is the ninth installment in the Teenage Shutdown! series of garage rock compilations put out by Tim Warren of Crypt Records, which is available on both LP and compact disc formats. The Quests were an American garage rock band formed in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1964. Recording for Fenton Records between 1966 and 1967, the group released three singles in their career. Although the group was hampered by a lyrical controversary surrounding one of their tunes, they achieved regional popularity among their teen fanbase with the original songs "Scream Loud" and "Shadows in the Night". Since the Quests' disbandment, their material has been well-documented on garage rock compilation albums and prompted surviving members to occasionally reunite.
Tonto and the Renegades were an American garage rock band from Grand Ledge, Michigan who were active between 1964 and 1969. They were formed by students from Grand Ledge High School and their name derived from the nickname of their bass player, Gary Richey, who because of his Native American heritage was referred to as "Tonto" by his friends at school. The group had several hits in the Southern Michigan region in 1966 and 1967. By the late 1960s group was being courted by major record labels, when the prospect of the Vietnam War draft caused two members to leave the band, resulting in the group's breakup. The intervening years have witnessed a revival of interest in the band's music amongst garage rock enthusiasts. Tonto and the Renegades are now best known for their song "Little Boy Blue", which is today regarded as a garage rock classic. In 2012 Tonto and The Renegades were inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends online Hall of Fame.
The Plagues were an American garage rock band from Lansing, Michigan who were active in the 1960s. They were led by bass player, principal songwriter, and vocalist William Malone. The group had a local and regional hit with "I’ve Been Through It Before". Malone left the band in 1966 to join the Frightened Trees, as the remaining members formed a new group out of the ashes of the Plagues, the Plain Brown Wrapper. Malone later became a successful Hollywood movie director, whose 2008 horror thriller Parasomnia included "I’ve Been Through It Before", as well as other songs by the Plagues and other 1960s garage bands. In the intervening years the Plagues work has attracted a following amongst garage rock enthusiasts and collectors.
The Jades were an American garage rock band from Sparta, Michigan who were active in the 1960s. They were one of the most popular bands in Sparta and West Michigan and cut two singles for Fenton Records owned by Dave Kalmback, who eventually became the group's manager. They are remembered for songs such as "Please Come Back" and the topical "Confined Congregation", and their work is highly regarded today by garage rock collectors and enthusiasts.
The Aardvarks were an American garage rock band from Muskegon, Michigan who were active between 1964-1968. They recorded three singles, two of which were issued on labels of Dave Kalmback's Fenton Records based in Sparta, Michigan. The group scored a local hit with "I'm Higher than I'm Down", which is now considered a garage rock classic, and several of their songs have been included in garage rock compilations.
A-Square : The Story of Michigan's Legendary A-Square Records is a collection of garage rock songs originally recorded in the 1960s for the Ann Arbor, Michigan-based A-Square label, which has been compiled for this release by Big Beat Records. Michigan had one of the most active garage rock scenes in the country and Jeep Holland was one of its prime movers, as the owner of one of the city's most premier record stores and founder/proprietor of the A-squared label. This collection focuses on the pivotal period in the later half of 1960s as garage rock began encompass psychedelic influences and gravitate towards heavier sounds, typified by groups such as MC5, two of whose pre-Elektra songs are showcased here. All of the tracks are taken off of source tapes from A-Square's vaults. Noted rock journalist Alec Palao compiled the set and wrote its liner notes.
