Development

Development began in 2019 with the Unity game engine. [1] The game was announced in December of that year on Triassic Game's Facebook and Twitter pages. [2] One of the developers was also the former head developer of Killerfish Games' Cold Waters in 2017. [3] All developers are from different countries (Sweden, Germany and Poland respectively). [4] In 2020, MicroProse announced it would publish the game. While the company had closed in the early 2000s, it was revived in 2019. Sea Power was one of the first games announced by the rebooted MicroProse as part of a lineup of new military strategy games. [5]

Gameplay

The game is set in the Cold War between the 1960s and 1980s, mainly focusing on naval warfare between NATO and Warsaw Pact forces in the North Atlantic. Also included are scenarios based on the War of Attrition, Yom Kippur War, Vietnam War, Tanker War, Operation Praying Mantis and Bangladesh Liberation war. [6] [7] The game features more then 200 units that depict various kinds of warships, transports, submarines, helicopters, aircraft, land units, and civilian traffic. [8] Players can give orders to fleets or directly control a unit, such as by selecting targets or activating a sensor. [9] Also included is a scenario creator for custom missions and an in-game encyclopedia that contains information about each unit and weapon. [8]

According to the developers, the gameplay style is inspired by Janes's Fleet Command and Strike Fleet. [10] The game shares many features with Fleet Command, including 3D graphics, real time gameplay, time compression, and the inclusion of carrier and land based aircraft. [7] The game also includes vessels and aircraft that were cancelled before completion or being built, such as the Orel-class aircraft carrier. [11]

Reception

Sea Power had an early access release on 12 November 2024, [12] and was one of the best selling games on Steam that month. [13] The UK Defence Journal praised the game for being immersive and including small details, such as helicopters leaving hangers and being prepared for launch. [9] The Center for International Maritime Security described the game as being a useful wargaming tool that could keep the attention of midshipmen. [14] It has also been described as serving as the spiritual successor to Jane's Fleet Command . [15]
