Secret in the Dark is a studio album by Monika Christodoulou, released under the performing name Monika. It was released in Europe and the United States on October 2, 2015 on the Other Music Recording Co. label.
Christodoulou had previously released two albums of folk-pop songs influenced by traditional Greek folk music. [2] These records had made her a big star in her native Greece, both albums achieving platinum sales status there; [2] French magazine Télérama has described her as the star of Greek pop music during the years of the country's financial crisis. [3] She remained, however, largely unknown outside the country. [3] [4]
She has said, "My first two releases were pretty much just ballads. I was known in Greece for my deep, emotional side." [5] Secret in the Dark represents a departure, both musically and lyrically, replacing the earlier, predominantly acoustic instrumentation with a mixture of upbeat disco, funk, and soul. [6] In interviews, Christodoulou has repeatedly explained the change in musical style by recounting the story of an incident in which she nearly drowned. [2] [5] [7] [8] While on a sailing trip in the Aegean sea in 2012, Christodoulou had to jump overboard after the boat caught fire; she swam for nearly eight hours to reach the shore, swimming in the dark and with no food or water. [2] [8] In the days afterwards, she temporarily lost her eyesight from over-exposure to salt water. [2] Describing how the incident changed her perspective on her music, Christodoulou has said: "My first two albums, everyone was like, 'You’re such a positive person, why do you play this sad music?' I was like, maybe because it balances my ego. But now? No. Even at home, I just want to be grooving." [2]
The record is produced by Homer Steinweiss, drummer with the Dap-Kings and a founder member of the Menahan Street Band. It also features Steinweiss's bandmate Thomas Brenneck on guitar. The pair had previously worked together on other Dap-Kings-related projects, notably Amy Winehouse's Back to Black (2006). [7] Christodoulou met her collaborators when she was travelling in New York as a tourist. She presented herself at the office of Daptone Records where she met Brenneck, who listened to the demo recordings Christodolou had stored on her phone. She later returned to New York to work on the album. [9]

The reviewer for The Guardian writes that the record "attempts to stuff the irrepressible energies of disco, funk and soul into one package. When it works, as on Stripping’s icy disco-funk, Monika shines." [6] AllMusic's reviewer writes that Monika's "pairing with Homer Steinweiss, Thomas Brenneck, and their cohorts on Secret in the Dark is inspired, taking her music in new and exciting directions." [1] The reviewer adds: "The album also feels indebted to Monika's theatrical work; in the best possible way, its nighttime portraits and stories feel more like set pieces than mere songs." [1] A review of the album's title track for Pitchfork states: "The deep clavinet groove runs on the DNA of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”, and gives way to luscious, loopy disco and Parallel Lines-era Blondie wooziness—a stylish amble through late 70s New York nightlife, essentially. But there’s still something unmistakably European about the track’s kitschy sensibility: “Secret” has a strong foothold in Euro-disco’s lineage, from Germany’s Veronika Fischer to ABBA." [10] The French magazine Télérama named the record as one of their fifty best albums of 2015. [11]

Nightclubbing is the fifth studio album by Jamaican singer and songwriter Grace Jones, released on 11 May 1981 by Island Records. Recorded at Compass Point Studios with producers Alex Sadkin and Island Records' president Chris Blackwell, as well as a team of session musicians rooted by rhythm section Sly and Robbie, the album marked her second foray into a new wave style that blends a variety of genres, including reggae, art pop, dub, synth-pop and funk. The album has cover versions of songs by Bill Withers, Iggy Pop, Astor Piazzolla, and others, and original songs, three of which were co-written by Jones.
Daptone Records is a funk and soul independent record label based in Brooklyn, New York. Best known as the home of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Charles Bradley, the label boasts a roster which includes Menahan Street Band, The Budos Band, The Sugarman 3, and Antibalas, and runs the recording studio Daptone's House of Soul.
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings were an American funk and soul band signed to Daptone Records. They were part of a revival movement of mid-1960s to mid-1970s style funk and soul music. They released their debut album Dap Dippin' in 2002, the first of seven studio albums. Their 2014 album Give the People What They Want was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. Following Sharon Jones' death in 2016, the band released the posthumous album Soul of a Woman in 2017 and a compilation of cover songs in 2020.
Sharon Lafaye Jones was an American soul and funk singer. She was the lead singer of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, a soul and funk band based in Brooklyn, New York. Jones experienced breakthrough success relatively late in life, releasing her first record when she was 40 years old. In 2014, Jones was nominated for her first Grammy, in the category Best R&B Album, for Give the People What They Want.
Back to Black is the second and final studio album by English singer and songwriter Amy Winehouse, released on 27 October 2006 by Island Records. Winehouse predominantly based the album on her tumultuous relationship with then-ex-boyfriend and future husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who temporarily left her to pursue his previous ex-girlfriend. The Budos Band is an American instrumental band from Staten Island, New York, formed in 2005. AllMusic describes the group as a "doom rock Afro-soul big band with a '70s touch" that joins "musical universes from trippy psychedelia and Afro-funk to '70s hard rock and late-'60s soul." They have described themselves as "70's Psychedelic Instrumental Music," and "Afro-soul inspired by Ethiopian music with a soul undercurrent" and "sprinkled a little bit of sweet 60's stuff on top." One reviewer described the band as “sounding as if Quentin Tarantino was the music supervisor for a Bond film". Their more recent albums have incorporated sounds from 1970s jazz, funk, Afro-Beat, underground rock, and proto-metal. They have been signed to Daptone Records throughout their career.
Menahan Street Band is a Brooklyn, New York-based instrumental band formed in 2007, that plays funk and soul music. The band features musicians from Antibalas, El Michels Affair, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and the Budos Band. The group was founded by Thomas Brenneck while living in an apartment on Menahan Street in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick. Their debut album, Make the Road by Walking, was released in 2008 on Dunham, a sublabel of Daptone Records.
I Learned the Hard Way is the fourth studio album by American soul and funk band Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, released April 6, 2010 on Daptone Records. Production for the album took place at the label's House of Soul Studios during 2009 to 2010 and was handled by Daptone co-founder Gabriel Roth, credited for the album as "Bosco Mann". The album debuted at number 15 on the US Billboard 200, selling 23,000 copies in its first week. Upon its release, I Learned the Hard Way received generally positive reviews from most music critics.

Her third album, Secret in the Dark, was the first to be given an international release, in 2015. It was recorded in New York in collaboration with musicians from the Dap-Kings, and sees Christodoulou moving away from the folk, singer-songwriter style of her earlier albums towards a disco and funk sound.
"Blow" is a song recorded by American singer Beyoncé from her self-titled fifth studio album (2013). It was written by Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, J-Roc, James Fauntleroy and Justin Timberlake, and produced by the former four. It was set to be released as one of the lead singles following the release of the album along with "Drunk in Love", however, its release was scrapped in favor of "XO". It was released as a single only for the Italian radio.
"Style" is a song by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and the third single from her fifth studio album, 1989 (2014). Swift wrote the song with producers Max Martin, Shellback, and Ali Payami. "Style" was released to radio on February 9, 2015, by Big Machine in partnership with Republic Records. An incorporation of pop, funk, disco, and electronic styles, "Style" is built on an electric guitar riff, pulsing synthesizers, and dense vocal reverb. The lyrics are about an on-and-off couple stuck in an unhealthy relationship because they are never "out of style".
Changes is the third album released by American funk/soul singer Charles Bradley, released on April 1, 2016 on Daptone Records. The title track on the album is a cover of the Black Sabbath song of the same name and was first released as a Record Store Day Black Friday single in 2013.
Thomas "Tommy" Brenneck is an American guitarist, record producer, and engineer, best known as the leader Menahan Street Band and member of The Budos Band, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, and El Michels Affair. He is the founder of Dunham Records, a subsidiary of seminal retro-soul label Daptone Records, and was the producer of soul singer Charles Bradley. As a producer session musician, he frequently works with Daptone and Big Crown Records artists.
"Telepathy" is a song by American singer and songwriter Christina Aguilera featuring American musician Nile Rodgers, recorded for the 2016 Netflix musical drama series The Get Down and included on the accompanying soundtrack of the same name. It was co-written by Sia in collaboration with Mikkel Storleer Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen. The track was produced by Elliott Wheeler and The Get Down director, Baz Luhrmann. While it was available to download from the soundtrack upon its release, it was promoted in Italy to contemporary hit radio as a single on August 23, 2016. Various remixes were also released throughout the following month.
Homer Steinweiss is an American drummer, songwriter, and producer known as a prominent drummer in the New York soul revival scene. He is a founding member and drummer of groups including Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Lee Fields & The Expressions, El Michels Affair, and Dan Auerbach's The Arcs, among many others. He leads the Brooklyn folk soul band Holy Hive with Paul Spring. A popular session musician as part of The Dap-Kings and in his own right, he is perhaps best known for his work with Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse, with whom he recorded the 2006 album Back to Black.
Soul of a Woman is the seventh and final studio album by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, released on November 17, 2017. Sharon Jones had died from cancer the previous year and the album features her final studio recordings.
Leon Marcus Michels is an American music producer, record executive, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist best known as the leader of the eclectic soul project El Michels Affair and co-founder of Truth & Soul Records and Big Crown Records. He is a founding member of soul and funk bands Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Menahan Street Band, and Lee Fields & The Expressions, and has played with Charles Bradley as well as Wu-Tang Clan. A frequent collaborator of Dan Auerbach, Michels was a touring member of The Black Keys and co-founded The Arcs. As a producer, Michels has produced records for artists such as Lee Fields, Norah Jones, Chicano Batman, Nicole Wray, and Hanni El Khatib.
