Seelawathie Rambukwella Gopallawa (died October 4,1977) was a Sri Lankan public figure,First Lady of Sri Lanka from 1972 to 1977,and wife of then-President William Gopallawa when she died. Gopallawa served as the country's inaugural first lady following her husband's assumption of the presidency in 1972.
Gopallawa was born Seelawathie Rambukwella to L. B. Rambukwelle. [1] [2] She married William Gopallawa,a lawyer and then-member of the Matale Urban Council,on March 8,1928. [1] [2] The couple had four children:two daughters,Iranganie and Chintha,and two sons,Asoka and Monty. [1] [3] Her youngest son,Monty Gopallawa,served as Minister of Cultural Affairs from 2000 to 2001 and Governor of Central Province from 2002 until 2005. [1]
Gopallawa's husband,William Gopallawa,served as the Governor-General of Ceylon from 1962 to 1972. In 1972,Seelawathie Gopallawa became the first First Lady of Sri Lanka when Sri Lanka became a republic and her husband assumed the presidency. [1]
Gopallawa served as the country's inaugural first lady until her death on October 4,1977. [1] Her ashes were buried in the Gopallawa family cemetery in Dullewa following her cremation. [1] Like her husband,who died in 1981,Seelawathie Gopallawa donated her eyes to the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society following her death. [1]
She had lived as the family home in Dharmapala Mawatha,Matale. [1]
Sirima Ratwatte Dias Bandaranaike,commonly known as Sirimavo Bandaranaike (මැතිනිය),was a Sri Lankan politician. She was the world's first female prime minister when she became Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in 1960. She chaired the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) from 1960 to 1994 and served three terms as prime minister,two times as the chief executive,1960 to 1965 and 1970 to 1977,and once again in a presidential system from 1994 to 2000,governing under the presidency of her daughter Chandrika Kumaratunga.
William Gopallawa was the last Governor-General of Ceylon from 1962 to 1972 and became the first and only non-executive and ceremonial President of Sri Lanka when Ceylon declared itself a republic in 1972 and changed its name to Sri Lanka. From 1948 to 1972,the Dominion of Ceylon was a Commonwealth realm with Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state and Queen of Ceylon. He served as Governor-General during the tenure of different governments headed by Sirimavo Bandaranaike of the SLFP and Dudley Senanayake of the UNP.

Moithra Cuda Banda Gopallawa was a Sri Lankan politician. Gopallawa was the son of William Gopallawa who served as Governor-General of Ceylon and President of Sri Lanka. Gopallawa was a member of Sri Lanka's parliament. He served as deputy Minister of Labour from 1994 to 1997,deputy minister of public works from 1997 to 2000,and as cabinet minister of cultural affairs from 2000 to 2001. He lost the 2001 General Election. In 2002 he became the governor of Central Province,Sri Lanka and served in that position until his death. He died at a hospital in Colombo,Sri Lanka's capital,during treatment for an illness.
