Nagapattinam is a town in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the administrative headquarters of Nagapattinam district. The town came to prominence during the period of Medieval Cholas and served as their important port for commerce and east-bound naval expeditions. The Chudamani Vihara in Nagapattinam constructed by the Srivijayan king Sri Mara Vijayattungavarman of the Sailendra dynasty with the help of Rajaraja Chola I was an important Buddhist structure in those times. Nagapattinam was settled by the Portuguese and,later,the Dutch under whom it served as the capital of Dutch Coromandel from 1660 to 1781. In November 1781,the town was conquered by the British East India Company. It served as the capital of Tanjore district from 1799 to 1845 under Madras Presidency of the British. It continued to be a part of Thanjavur district in Independent India. In 1991,it was made the headquarters of the newly created Nagapattinam District. Nagapattinam is administered by a Special grade municipality covering an area of 17.92 km2 (6.92 sq mi) and had a population of 102,905 as of 2011.

Mohammed Salim is an Indian politician,who is the incumbent State Secretary in West Bengal of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was inducted in the politburo of CPI(M) in the 21st party congress organised at Visakhapatnam in 2015. He was a Member of the 16th Lok Sabha,representing Raiganj constituency. Earlier,he was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha,representing the Calcutta North East constituency of West Bengal. After delimitation,in the 2009 Lok Sabha election Salim contested the new Calcutta North constituency,and lost to Sudip Bandyopadhyay of the Trinamool Congress. Mohammed Salim is contesting the 2024 Indian general election as the Left Front candidate from the Murshidabad.
A.K.S. Vijayan is an Indian Politician and a former Member of Parliament of India. He was elected from the Nagapattinam constituency of Tamil Nadu as a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) political party three times in 1999,2004 and 2009 respectively. He is the son of veteran Communist leader and former Tamil Nadu MLA,A. K. Subbiah and S. Subbammal.

Amethi is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This constituency covers the entire Amethi district and was created in 1967. Like its neighboring constituency Rae Bareli,it is considered to be a bastion of the Indian National Congress. Its first member of parliament (MP) was Vidya Dhar Bajpai of the Indian National Congress (INC) who was elected in 1967 and held his seat in the next election in 1971. The subsequent by election held the same year was won by Satish Sharma of the INC. Sharma was re-elected in 1996. Sanjaya Sinh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated Sharma in the 1998 election. The widow of Rajiv Gandhi,Sonia Gandhi represented this constituency from 1999 to 2004. Her son,Rahul Gandhi,was elected in 2004. He was the fourth MP from the Nehru–Gandhi family since 1980 to represent the seat. Gandhi held the seat till the 2019 election when he was defeated by a margin of 55,000 votes by the BJP's Smriti Irani. Irani was defeated in 2024 by a margin of over 1.67 lakh votes by Kishori Lal Sharma of the Indian National Congress.

He won the seat with 46.06% and was elected Member of Parliament for Nagapattinam for 16th Lok Sabha.
Homi F. Daji was a member of the 3rd Lok Sabha of India. He represented the Indore constituency of Madhya Pradesh and was a member of the Communist Party of India.
On 17 June 1979 a by-election was held in for the Nagapattinam seat in the Lok Sabha. The by-election was called after the murder of the incumbent Communist Party of India parliamentarian S.G. Murugaiyan,one of three prominent communist leaders killed in the state of Tamil Nadu in 1979. The Nagapattinam constituency was reserved for Scheduled Castes.
Sithamalli Govindan Murugaiyan,usually called S.G. Murugaiyan,was a communist politician in Tamil Nadu,India. S.G. Murugaiyan was a prominent leader of struggles of the oppressed sections of people in Mannargudi taluk,and became the first person from the Scheduled Castes in the state to be elected as revenue block chairman. In 1977 he was elected Member of Parliament. Two years later he was assassinated.
