Seneca Township is a minor civil division [1] in Kossuth County, Iowa, United States. [2]

History

Seneca Township was previously called Greenwood Township, and divided from Swea Township. Many of its early settlers were farmers, including dairy farmers. [3] Its first post office was established in 1870. [4] State legislator Julius H. Jensen was born in Seneca Township in 1885. [5]

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, Seneca Township had a population of 132 residents in 56 households, of whom 126 were white, four were some other race, two were two or more races, and five were Hispanic or Latino of any race. [6]

Geography

Seneca Township has an area of 35.8 square miles [7] and an elevation of 1,197 feet. [1]

Government

Seneca Township is in district four of the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors, [8] represented by Kyle Stecker. [9] It is represented in the Iowa Senate by Republican Dennis Guth [10] of district four, [11] and in the Iowa House of Representatives by Republican Henry Stone [12] of district seven. [13] In the United States House of Representatives Seneca Township is represented by Republican Randy Feenstra of Iowa's 4th congressional district. [14]

Education

Seneca Township is split between the North Kossuth Community School District and the North Union Community School District. [15]

Bancroft County, Iowa, was a county located in what today is the northern portion of Kossuth County. The county was established in 1851 by the Iowa General Assembly, but then abolished six years later. The area was joined to Kossuth County, leading to it being roughly twice the size of adjacent counties. The reason that it became a part of Kossuth County was because the area was wetland, consequently making it unsuitable for farming. Now, only a small amount of the wetlands remain, mostly at the Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge. The remainder of the land is arable by modern farming standards.

Crocker County is a defunct county in the U.S. state of Iowa. In 1870, the Iowa General Assembly created Crocker County from the northern part of Kossuth County. The county seat was located at Greenwood, Iowa. In December 1871, the Iowa Supreme Court declared the act creating this county a violation of the constitution, which in article eleven declares that no new county shall be created which contains less than 432 square miles (112,000 ha). As Crocker County was smaller than the law allowed for, it ceased to exist from and after the rendition of that decision and the twelve townships in its territory reverted to Kossuth County.
