Senti Virus is a 2020 comedy-drama film directed by Ram Babu Gurung and written by Kumar Kattel and Dipak Acharya. The film is produced by Dindu Lama Hyolmo under the banner of Subihani Films. The film stars Sitaram Kattel and Kunjana Ghimire in the lead roles, with Dayahang Rai, Wilson Bikram Rai, Buddhi Tamang, and Rajaram Poudel.

The plot concerns an election in the Kavrepalanchok District which causes a marital dispute between Dhrubaram (Sitaram Kattel) and Juneli (Kunjana Ghimire) because their elderly father has declared his candidacy. The film received mixed reviews from critics. Senti Virus was pulled from cinema halls due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Nepal after three weeks of screening. Created on a budget of 28.4 million Nepalese rupees (NPR) (US$234,000(equivalent to $264,600 in 2022)), it grossed 40.8 million NPR. A 15 percent share of the film's profit was donated to construct the Gautam Buddha International Cricket Stadium.

Plot

A village in Kavrepalanchok District is approaching an election. Surya Bikram (Basanta Bhatta), a rich and powerful man, has declared his candidacy in the election and Dhrubaram (Sitaram Kattel) supports him. Meanwhile, Dhrubaram's wife Juneli's father (Rajaram Poudel) declares his candidacy. Juneli (Kunjana Ghimire) wants her father to win, but Dhrubaram is the president of Bikram's political party and is obliged to support his party candidate. The support of the opposing candidates leads to a marital dispute between the couple.

Production

The original title, Anti Virus, was changed on the advice of an astrologer to Senti Virus. [1] [2] [3] The film was officially announced on 7 August 2019. [4] The cinematography was done by Shailendra D Karki. [5] Principal photography began in July 2019. [6] Senti Virus was filmed at various locations, including Rupakot and Pokhara. [5] Filming concluded in October 2019. [7] [8]

Soundtrack

The film's soundtrack was composed by Shankar Thapa [9] and Sushant Gautam, [10] with lyrics by DP Khanal [11] and Harka Saud. [12] The vocals were performed by Melina Rai, [9] Kali Prasad Baskota, [9] Pramod Kharel, Bidhya Manju Tiwari, and Sushant Gautam. [13] The soundtrack was released on 21 February 2020 for digital download. [13]

Release

The first-look poster for the film was released on 5 November 2019 featuring Sitaram Kattel and the release date. [15] On 28 January 2020, the theatrical trailer was released. [16] The song "Fun Funy" was released before the release of the trailer. [17]

Before releasing the film, the producers announced that 15 percent of the profit from Senti Virus would be donated to the construction of Gautam Buddha International Cricket Stadium. The project to build the first ICC standard stadium in the country was started by the Dhurmus Suntali Foundation. [5] Screenings of the film were planned in Europe, America, and South Korea after its release in Nepal. [18] Senti Virus was released on 21 February 2020 in Nepal, on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri. [19] The film was released alongside four films, including Aama , The Call of the Wild, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan , and Bhoot – Part One: The Haunted Ship . [20] The international distribution rights of the film were sold to NepCine for 11.5 million NPR. [21]

Senti Virus was pulled from cinema halls after three weeks of screening due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Nepal. [18] The Rising Nepal described the film as "probably the biggest victim of COVID-19". [18] Sitaram Kattel said that the COVID-19 pandemic had shattered his plans, saying, "I am now in tension; my plans have been ruined [...] When my film failed to survive even three weeks in local theatres, and all doors to release it abroad have been shut down, I have come to Chitwan to cope with the tension". [18]

Box office

The budget of the film was 28.4 million NPR (US$234,000(equivalent to $264,600 in 2022)). [22] Senti Virus grossed 11.2 million NPR (US$92,500(equivalent to $104,600 in 2022)) on its opening day. [19] As of June 2020, it had made total earnings of 40.8 million NPR (US$337,000(equivalent to $381,100 in 2022)). [22] [23]

Reception

Rupak Risal of Moviemandu said that the film left many questions unanswered, writing, "When you come out of the theatre, it feels like a huge chunk of [the] movie is left somewhere in the editing room as the botched up conclusion is so abrupt". [24] Reena Moktan of Kantipur wrote that the climax of the film is very weak. [25] Anil Yadav of Saptahik assumed that the director Ram Babu Gurung made the film only to earn money. [26] The staff of Onlinekhabar praised the acting of the lead actors. [27] Shukrabar asserted that Senti Virus is the weakest film of Ram Babu Gurung's career. [28]

Chhakka Panja is a 2016 Nepalese comedy-drama film directed and produced by Deepa Shree Niraula. The film is Niraula's directorial debut and features an ensemble cast of Priyanka Karki, Deepak Raj Giri, Jeetu Nepal, Kedar Ghimire, Buddhi Tamang, Shivahari Poudel, Barsha Raut and Namrata Sapkota. Kunjana Ghimire, popularly known by her serial name Suntali, is a Nepalese philanthropist, comedian, actress and a social worker. She is one of the main characters of the Nepali TV series Meri Bassai. She is considered one of the Nepal's talented and good comedian ever because she had played various roles in her own sitcom Meri Bassai. She is highly active in social work.

Dhurmus Suntali Foundation is a Nepalese charity founded primarily for victims of 2015 Nepali earthquakes. Since then, the foundation has expanded its projects like Gautam Buddha International Cricket Stadium. The charity was founded by well-known Nepalese comedians Sitaram Kattel and Kunjana Ghimire. Famous persons like Rekha Thapa and those from different countries have contributed to this charity.

Surke Thaili Khai or Surke Thaili is a Nepalese song by Rajan Raj Shiwakoti, Anju Panta, Raju Biswokarma, released on August 6, 2015. It was a single from soundtrack album Woda Number 6 (2015). The song was produced by Deepak Raj Giri, Kedar Ghimire, Deepa Shree Niraula and Jeetu Nepal. It is the second most viewed Nepalese song in YouTube currently viewing over 24 million. "Melancholy" is an environmentally-themed song sung by 365 Nepali artists. This song was intended to promote an environmental message by breaking the Guinness World Records for "Most Vocal Solos in a Song Recording", which it successfully did. It was written, music composed and directed by environmentalist Nipesh Dhaka. The song was recorded as a single on 19 May 2016. The recording sessions were inaugurated by Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli at 8 am and continued until 6 pm. The song was released on 2 September 2017 by President Bidya Devi Bhandari at Army Officer's Club, Kathmandu.

Prem Geet 3 is a 2022 Nepali language film, also dubbed & released in Hindi over Nepal & India, directed by Chhetan Gurung and Santosh Sen under the banner of Aasusen Films Production (Nepal), Reltic Pictures (India) and Sparkling Studio (India). It is the first Indo-Nepali film; the first film to be released in both Nepali and Hindi simultaneously. It was expected to be released in 80 to 90 countries and in 500 to 1,000 cinema halls in India. Sen made his directorial debut through this film. The film was released on September 23, 2022. The majority of the filming took place in upper Manang with the remaining taking place on sets built in Kritipur. The film features Pradeep Khadka, Kristina Gurung, Shiva Shrestha, and Sunil Thapa in lead role. Gurung made her debut through this film; she was selected after outperforming the other 27,013 participants at the audition.

Ainaa Jhyal Ko Putali is a 2020 Nepali coming-of-age film written and directed by Sujit Bidari under the banner of Icefall Productions and Local Cinema. The film is Nepal's submission for the 95th Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film. It is the first Nepali film to compete for prize worth of 30,000 US dollars in 25th Busan International Film Festival for the category New Currents in 2020. Bidari also won the best director award in 2022 Dhaka International Film Festival. Released on September 9, 2022, the film stars Kanchan Chimariya, Dinesh Khatri, Siru Bista, and Ashok Shiwakoti, with the first two making their film debuts; similarly it was the first film for most of the actors who worked on it. Chhakka Panja 4 is a 2023 Nepalese comedy film written by Deepak Raj Giri and directed by Hem Raj BC. It is the fourth and the latest film in Chakka Panja franchise. Dimag Kharab is an upcoming Nepali film, which is directed by Nischal Basnet from a screenplay by Aakash Baral under the banner of Black Horse Pictures Pvt.Ltd. It is produced by Raunak Bikram Kandel. Releasing on October 21, 2023, the film stars Dayahang Rai, Khagendra Lamichhane, Swastima Khadka, Arpan Thapa, and Bijay Baral.
