Canada was the host nation for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. It was the first time that Canada had hosted the Winter Olympic Games, and second time overall, after the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Vancouver would eventually host the 2010 Winter Olympics which makes it the second city in Canada to host the Winter Olympics and the third overall.
Mongolia sent a delegation to compete at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy from 10–26 February 2006. Serge Jonás Ibaka Ngobila is a Congolese-Spanish professional basketball player who last played for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Ibaka was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics with the 24th overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft. Ibaka is a three-time NBA All-Defensive First Team selection and has twice led the league in blocks. Although born in the Republic of the Congo, Ibaka plays for the Spain national team. In 2019, he won his first NBA championship as a key member of the Toronto Raptors.

Serge Jean Maury is a French sailor. He competed in the finn class at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics and won a gold medal in 1972. He won the Finn Gold Cup in 1973 and placed third in 1971.
Serge Demierre was a Swiss professional road bicycle racer. He competed in the individual road race event at the 1976 Summer Olympics. In 1983, Demierre won the Combativity award and the 4th stage of the 1983 Tour de France. He was the Swiss National Road Race champion in 1983.
