History

Serve Robotics was established in 2017 as an internal robotics initiative within Postmates, a United States based food delivery company. The division focused on developing autonomous sidewalk delivery robots designed to transport food and retail items in dense urban environments. [3]

In 2020, Postmates was acquired by Uber Technologies. Following the acquisition, Serve Robotics continued development under Uber before spinning out as an independent company in 2021 with seed funding from venture capital firm Neo and participation from Uber. [4]

In August 2023, Serve Robotics announced a reverse merger transaction allowing the company to become publicly traded. The company began trading on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol SERV in 2024. [5]

Technology

Serve Robotics develops electric autonomous delivery robots designed to operate on sidewalks and pedestrian pathways. The robots use a combination of cameras, lidar sensors, and artificial intelligence software to navigate urban environments, detect obstacles, and comply with pedestrian traffic rules. [6]

Later generations of Serve Robotics robots feature increased cargo capacity, extended battery life, and enhanced onboard computing designed to support higher delivery volumes and fleet scalability. [7]

Partnerships and operations

Serve Robotics operates through commercial partnerships with food delivery platforms. The company maintains a long term operational partnership with Uber Eats, allowing customers in select cities to receive deliveries via autonomous robots. [8]

In October 2025, Serve Robotics announced a partnership with DoorDash to deploy autonomous robots on the DoorDash platform, expanding beyond its exclusive relationship with Uber Eats. [9]

The company reported completing more than 100,000 autonomous deliveries across multiple United States cities including Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, and Chicago. [10]

Funding and growth

Serve Robotics has received investment from several technology and logistics focused firms including Uber Technologies, Nvidia, Delivery Hero, and 7-Eleven Ventures. [11]

In 2023, the company raised additional capital to support robot manufacturing, regulatory expansion, and market deployment. [12]

Milestones

In October 2025, Serve Robotics announced the deployment of its 1,000th autonomous delivery robot. [13]

By the end of 2025, the company reported a deployed fleet exceeding 2,000 autonomous delivery robots, making it one of the largest sidewalk delivery robot operators in the United States. [14]

Safety and public response

Serve Robotics and similar autonomous delivery services have been the subject of public discussion regarding sidewalk safety and accessibility. In 2025, an incident involving a Serve Robotics delivery robot and a mobility scooter user in Los Angeles prompted renewed debate over autonomous robot regulation and pedestrian safety standards.
