Sevda Karaca Demir (born, 1984, Adana, Turkey) is a journalist and politician of the Labour Party (EMEP). Since June 2023 she is a member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey representing Gaziantep. Before she was a journalist for the newspaper Evrensel.
Sevda Karaca was born in 1984 in Adana, as the daughter of a textile workers family. She studied political sciences at the Middle Eastern Technical University (ODTÜ) and was tempted by journalism.
In 2007, Sevda Karaca began as a journalist for Evrensel and was also involved in founding Hayat TV. [1] For Hayat TV, Karaca was a reporter from Ankara. [1] She also became the presenter of the show Ekmek ve Gül that focuses on the women's workers rights. [1] In 2010 she established a women's supplement to the Evrensel also called Ekmek ve Gül. [1] In 2016, Hayat TV was shut down in the aftermath of the attempted coup d'état in 2016. [2] In 2018 she received the Metin Göktepe journalism award. [3] in 2021, she was a member of the jury for the Metin Göktepe award. [4]
In the parliamentary elections of May 2023, she was elected into the Grand National Assembly of Turkey representing the Green Left Party (YSP) for Gaziantep. [5]
As a politician from Gaziantep, she defends workers rights. [6] In July 2023 she raised awareness about the situations of two workers from a factory owned by İrfan Çeliksan, an MP for the Justice and Development Party (AKP). [6] The workers were allegedly forced to work despite being diagnosed with COVID-19 and subsequently died. [6] The court suspended the investigation into their deaths due to the parliamentary immunity that protects Çeliksan. [6]
Sevda Karaca believes the elections in 2023 were not fair as the Governing alliance used state resources in their electoral campaign. [6] After the parliamentary elections she demanded a repetition of the elections in the Gaziantep province as around 2000 potential voters for the EMEP were inscribed as polling officials by the Patriotic Party without having informed them. [7]
The Labour Party is a communist party in Turkey. Its chairperson is Seyit Aslan. The party was founded as Emek Partisi in 1996. Due to its ban by the Constitutional Court, it was refounded with the name Emeğin Partisi, the same year. In 2005, the name "Emek Partisi" was reinstalled after the European Court of Human Rights held the ban was a violation of Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Ahmet Şık is a Turkish investigative journalist, the author of several books, a trade unionist, and member of Parliament in Turkey. His book, The Imam's Army, investigating the controversial Gülen movement of the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, led to his detention for a year in 2011–2012 and the book's being seized and banned. He was under indictment in the OdaTV case of the Ergenekon trials; his cause has been taken up by English PEN, an association of writers fighting for freedom of expression. In 2016, the prosecutor in this case requested Şık's acquittal. On 29 December 2016, Şık was taken into custody once again on charges of "propaganda of terrorist organisations", with reference to 11 tweets that he had published. The following day, an Istanbul judge ordered Ahmet's arrest. According to lawyers, Şık was denied access to legal advice, held in solitary confinement, and not given drinking water for three days. He ran as an HDP candidate in 2018 Turkish elections and got elected from Istanbul's second electoral district. In 2020, he resigned from HDP, citing political differences and after sitting as an independent for a year, he joined the Workers' Party of Turkey.
The Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party is a pro-Kurdish political party in Turkey. It is the legal successor of the Green Left Party and with the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) handing over its work to this party in 2023, it became the latest iteration of the Kurdish minority interests party in Turkey.
The 2003 by-election in the Province of Siirt was held on 9 March 2003 in order to elect three Members of Parliament from the eastern Turkish province of Siirt to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. The by-election was held four months after the 2002 general election in November, which the Supreme Electoral Council of Turkey declared null and void in Siirt due to voting irregularities in the district of Pervari. The council decided on 2 December 2002 that the complaints by the local electoral authorities had influenced on the election result, thus calling a by-election.
Figen Yüksekdağ Şenoğlu is a Turkish politician and journalist, who was a former co-leader of the left-wing Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) of Turkey from 2014 to 2017, serving alongside Selahattin Demirtaş. She was a Member of Parliament for Van since the June 2015 general election until her parliamentary membership was revoked by the courts on 21 February 2017. Her party membership and therefore her co-leadership position were revoked by the courts on 9 March 2017 following a six-year prison sentence for distributing "terrorist propaganda".
In the run-up to the Turkish general election of June 2015, many political parties engaged in campaign efforts to increase their vote shares. The main contesting parties were the governing incumbent Justice and Development Party (AKP) led by Ahmet Davutoğlu, the Republican People's Party (CHP) led by Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) led by Devlet Bahçeli and the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) co-led by Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ. These four parties are the only parties with a realistic chance of surpassing the 10% parliamentary threshold to gain representation in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey

The Genetically Modified Tomato Awards are annual awards given by the Turkish LGBT community to queerphobic people and institutions in order to catch attention to homophobia, transphobia and sexual discrimination. The first Genetically Modified Tomato Awards were given in 2005 by Lambda Istanbul, and it is currently given by the Istanbul Pride Committee. The title of the award comes from sports commentator Erman Toroğlu, who infamously said that the "genetically modified tomatoes are turning people gay".
