Severn School is a private, coeducational college preparatory school serving students from preschool through grade 12 in Severna Park, Maryland. [1]
The school was founded in 1914 by Roland M. Teel as a preparatory school for the United States Naval Academy. [1]
In 2013, Severn School merged with the nearby Chesapeake Academy. [1]
The Severn Admirals compete in around six or seven varsity sports: sailing, lacrosse, cross country running, football, wrestling, soccer, basketball, swimming, baseball, golf, WWE training, tennis, field hockey, as well as track and field in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association. Severn has 35 varsity, junior varsity, and middle school teams.
On Severn's 67-acre upper school and middle school campus, there are several academic buildings, including Teel Academic Center and Creeden Hall connected by elevated glass bridges on the upper floors. Teel Academic Center underwent a complete renovation in 2015 where the original Teel Academic Center, constructed in 1967 to house boarding students, was torn down and replaced with the new 67 million dollar building. [2] The new building houses Graw Innovation Center, a computer lab, the Zimmerman Library, and the Hoehn-Saric Family Center for Academic Excellence, as well as middle and upper school classrooms. [3] Creeden Hall, constructed in 2002 as the Upper School Academic Center, contains science labs and prep rooms, a greenhouse, "Roche" Lecture Hall, classrooms, two computer labs, and several spaces for students such as Creeden Commons. [4] Also on this campus is McCleary Student Center which houses Price Auditorium, Bauer Dining Hall, Powell Conference Room, and several arts classrooms for both the middle and upper school. In 2012, construction was completed on the Stine Outdoor Education Center, a 2-acre space behind the two academic buildings featuring a tiered outdoor classroom, trails, a counsel ring, challenge course with low ropes to promote team building, and an artist's reflection area. [4]
Severn School has also finished the process of constructing the Edward St. John Athletic Center. The facility, opened April 2008, cost about $10 million dollars. Alongside the completion of this building was the construction of two turf fields, one for field hockey and lacrosse, and one for football and soccer, [5] to accompany two more grass athletic fields.
The Chesapeake Campus in Arnold, obtained in 2013, houses Severn's Lower School. On that campus are Flinchum Gymnasium, Pat Troy Center, and Sivvy Theatre. There are 2 fully equipped outdoor playgrounds, an outdoor science learning area, learning pavilion, and trike and scooter path for early childhood students.
In late 2024, Severn School launched Our Future, Our Severn: A Promise, a capital campaign with a goal of $25 million to support new construction and renovations across its campuses. [6] The campaign includes rebuilding the Chesapeake Campus, renovating Price Auditorium, and strengthening endowments for programs, faculty development, and financial aid. [7]
The Chesapeake Campus, home to the Lower School, was largely demolished in mid-2025, with the exception of the Flinchum Gymnasium (built 2004) and parts of the theatre, which were preserved. [8] The new facility is planned as a 65,000-square-foot building spread over two levels. Construction has begun, and opening is expected in the 2026–2027 school year. [8]
Planned features include:
During construction, Lower School students are housed at a temporary complex called the Learning Village, located on the "Little Field" of the Teel Campus. The Learning Village consists of 18 modular classroom buildings and one restroom unit, totaling approximately 15,600 sq ft. The classrooms were provided by Mobile Modular and delivered in June 2025. The arrangement includes ADA-compliant ramps, decking, and canopies, with three units adapted for staff offices.
The campaign also includes renovations to Price Auditorium. Plans call for a new balcony, increasing seating capacity to 568; upgrades to the lobby and entrance; modernized lighting and acoustic systems; and general aesthetic and functional improvements. [8]
- The total cost of the Lower School project is projected at $30–35 million. [6]
- By the close of 2024, Severn reported raising $18.2 million during the leadership phase of the campaign. [7]
- Construction began in summer 2025 following demolition, with completion targeted for fall 2026. [8]
