Shahid Usman Balwa (born 1974) is an entrepreneur based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He is one of the promoters of Mumbai-based DB Group. [2]

Early and personal life

Balwa comes from the Chilya Sunni Muslim community, and his forefathers were from Gujarat.

Forbes billionaire

In 2010, Balwa was the youngest Indian to feature on the Forbes List and is amongst the 10 youngest billionaires in the world. [3] [4] He was ranked by Forbes as India's 50th richest man in 2010. [5] [6] [7]

2G Case

Balwa was arrested for his role in the 2G spectrum case by the CBI on 9 February 2011 on the allegation that DB group transferred 2 billion to a media company owned by members of the DMK party. [8] Former Telecom minister A. Raja allegedly helped Swan bag licences for 13 circles, including Mumbai and Delhi, for 15.37 billion. [9] [10] DB realty is one among the companies that purchased 2G licenses in 2008. DB Reality floated Swan Telecom. [11] The CBI also arrested two executives on 29 March 2011 including the brother of Balwa, Asif Balwa. [12] [13] A Delhi high-court on 29 November 2011 accepted the bail plea of Shahid Balwa and other under-trials. [14] On 21 December 2017, a Supreme Court appointed Special CBI Court acquitted him of all charges relating to his role in this case. [15]

Charitable work

His charitable activities are in the field of health and education. They include the Balwas High School and Charitable Medical Institution in Phirozpura, Gujarat. [16]

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is the domestic crime investigating agency of India. It operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. Suresh Kalmadi is an Indian politician and senior sports administrator. He is a former member of the Indian National Congress. He was a member of parliament from Pune until May 2014. He is alleged to have been involved in corrupt practices in relation to the 2010 Commonwealth Games during his tenure as president of Indian Olympic Association and chairman of Commonwealth Games 2010. He was charged with conspiracy, forgery, misconduct and under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and later arrested for the same in April 2014, but has not yet faced trial. In December 2016, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) named Suresh Kalmadi as its lifetime patron. However, he refused to accept the post until he was able to clear his name.

The 2G spectrum case was a political controversy in which politicians and private officials of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition government India were allegedly involved in selling or allotting 122 2G spectrum licenses on conditions that provided an advantage to specific telecom operators. A. Raja, then Telecom Minister, was accused of selling 2G spectrum licenses at a very low cost which resulted in the loss of ₹1,760 billion in government revenue. Raja was also accused of not following rules and regulations as well as not recognizing any advice from the Ministries of Finance and Law and Justice of India while allotting 2G spectrum licenses to telecom operators. Series of allegations were made on allotting 2G spectrum licenses including allegations from Central Bureau of Investigation after investigating the case alleging Raja for intentionally advancing the cut-off date to favour some specific firms, which were allegedly ineligible for applying for telecom licenses, in return for bribes.

Vinod Goenka is an Indian real-estate developer. He is Chairman and Managing Director of DB Realty Ltd, a real estate development company headquartered in Mumbai, India. He temporarily stepped down from his roles during his imprisonment in 2011.

Sadiq Batcha was an Indian entrepreneur and the managing director of real estate company Green House Promoters Private Limited. Sadiq allegedly committed suicide under suspicious circumstances related to the 2G spectrum case in India. Police found a suicide note that read the reason as the excessive media coverage that maligned his image said he felt sorry for A. Raja's plight.
