Ferdowsi University of Mashhad is a public university in Mashhad, the capital city of the Iranian province of Razavi Khorasan. FUM is named after Abul-Qâsem Ferdowsi Tusi, who is considered to be the national epic poet of Greater Iran. Having been established in 1949, FUM is the third-oldest modern university in Iran.

Javad Shahrestani was an Iranian engineer, academic and politician who served as the Mayor of City of Tehran. He was the last mayor to serve under the Pahlavi Dynasty. Born in Mashhad, he first became the mayor of Tehran in 1968 and served until 1969, when he was appointed first to Governorship of Kermanshah from 1969 to 1973 by the Shah of Iran, he was replaced by Gholamreza Nikpey. He was later appointed to the cabinet, and was the Minister of Transportation from 1973 to 1976. In 1977 he succeeded Nikpey as mayor and remained in the position until the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
The 2013–14 Hazfi Cup was the 27th season of the Iranian football knockout competition. Sepahan was the defending champion, but was eliminated by Sanat Naft in Round of 32. The competition started on 4 September 2013 and ended on 14 February 2014. Tractor won the title with defeating Mes Kerman in the final.

Ghamar Ariyan was an Iranian researcher and author. Mirza Abdolvahhab Aryan, her father, was an intellectual and a powerful figure in the city. He decided to create the first girls' school in Quchan after the birth of his daughter. The school was operated by literate and elite local women who taught the first six grades. Ghamar finished sixth grade there, and her father hired a private instructor to continue her education for another three years because she was highly brilliant. She subsequently went to an elementary teachers' college in Mashhad for her tenth and eleventh grades, while concurrently teaching sixth grade at a primary school.
