Shialesh Kumar (born 8 August 2000) is a para jumper from Bihar. He represented India in the men's high jump at the 2022 Asian Para Games at Hangzhou, China. He won a gold medal in the men's T63 high jump event clearing 1.82 meters on 23 October 2023. [1] [2] [3] [4] He is currently being supported by OGQ.

Early life and background

Kumar hails from Islamnagar in Aliganj block, Jamui district, Bihar. [5] In T63 classification, athletes with a single leg above the knee amputation compete with a prosthesis. He was born to Pratima Devi and Shivnandan Yadav and has two brothers. He did his graduation in Mathematics.

Career

He also represented India at the World Para Athletics Championships at Paris in July 2023 and won a silver medal. [6] He qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics. He won the National Championship at Bhubaneswar in March 2022. [7]

He also broke the nine-year-old Asian Para Games record of 1.80m set by Paralympics medalist Sharad Kumar in 2014. [8] Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Kumar for winning the gold medal. [9]

Rakshitha Raju, a visually challenged runner from India, is a para athlete from Chikkamagalur in Karnataka. She takes part in the women's 1500 metres T11 category. She was selected for the Indian team that took part in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games. She won the gold medal Asian Para Games behind China's Shanshan He. Later, Shanshan was disqualified and Raju was promoted to take the gold medal. She clocked 5 minutes, 21.45 seconds. Being a visually handicapped runner, Rakshitha completed the race with the help of a guide Rahul Balakrishna.

Thulasimathi Murugesan is a para badminton player from Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu. She represented India at the 2022 Asian Para Games held at Gangzhou, China. She won three medals in para badminton competitions, SL3-SU5 and SU5 classes.

Rachana Patel is a para athlete from Gujarat. She won a bronze medals at the 2022 Asian Para Games. She claimed bronze in Badminton women's double in the SH6 category along with Nithya Sre Sivan on 25 October 2023 at Hangzhou, China.

Pranav Soorma is an Indian para athlete who won the gold medal in the men's club throw F51 event at the 2022 Asian Para Games at Hangzhou, China. He also set an Asian Games record in the event with a throw of 30.01metres.

Soundarya Kumar Pradhan is an Indian para chess player from Odisha. The visually challenged chess player was selected for the Indian team that took part in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games.
