Hong Kong competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004. It was the territory's thirteenth appearance at the Olympics and, at the opening ceremony, its team was the last to enter the stadium before the host nation because of the use of the Greek alphabet.

Hong Kong competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia under the name Hong Kong, China for the first time, as these were the first Games after the territory's handover from the United Kingdom to China in 1997. 31 athletes competed across 9 sports; Chiang Wai Hung, Ho Kwan Lung, Tang Hon Sing, William To Wai Lok and Maggie Chan Man Yee in athletics, Tam Kai Chuen, Ng Wei, Koon Wai Chee Louisa and Ling Wanting in badminton, Yueng Alexandra Ka-Wah and Wong Kam Po in cycling, Yu Yuet in diving, Lo Sing Yan, Lui Kam Chi and Fenella Ng in rowing, Chi Ho Ho and Lee Lai Shan in sailing, Li Hao Jian in shooting, Mark Kin Ming Kwok, Matthew Hon Ming Kwok, Tam Chi Kin, Lik Sun Fong, Wing Harbeth Fu, Hiu Wai Sherry Tsai, Yan Kay Flora Kong, Chan Wing Suet and Caroline Sin Wing Chiu in swimming, and Cheung Yuk, Leung Chu Yan, Song Ah Sim and Wong Ching in table tennis. No Hong Kong athlete won a medal in any event.
Olympic Skeet is a variant of skeet shooting, and the specific variant used in the Olympic Games. The discipline is sanctioned by the International Shooting Sport Federation. Two throwing machines at different heights launch a series of 25 targets in a specific order, some as singles and some as doubles, with the shooter having a fixed position between them. Both men's and women's competitions consist of five such series. The top six competitors shoot an additional series as a final round, on targets filled with special powder to show hits more clearly to the audience. The competitors use shotguns of 12 bore or smaller. allowed are all actions, including double barrel breech loaders, semi-automatic or others, but not pump action guns.

Zhang Shan is a Chinese sports shooter and Olympic champion.
At the 2000 Summer Olympics, women's skeet shooting was included for the first time. The competition was held on 21 September, with Zemfira Meftahatdinova becoming the inaugural champion. The only woman to previously win a skeet competition at the Olympics, Zhang Shan participated but did not reach the final.
Skeet was one of the thirteen shooting events at the 1992 Summer Olympics. It was the last Olympic skeet competition open to both men and women, and the only mixed shooting competition at the Olympics ever won by a woman: Zhang Shan. The competition consisted of a qualification round of 150 targets, a semifinal of 50 targets for the top 24 competitors, and a final of 25 targets for the top six. Hitting all 200 targets of the preliminary rounds, and 23 in the final, Zhang won ahead of four male shooters at 222. With José María Colorado eliminated due to lower final score, a three-way shoot-off between Juan Giha, Bruno Rossetti and Ioan Toman determined the silver and bronze medals, going to Giha and Rossetti respectively. The event was held on 28 July at the Mollet del Vallès Shooting Range.
Wong Fai is a Hong Kong sport shooter. Wong represented Hong Kong, China at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he competed in the men's 25 m rapid fire pistol. He finished only in eighteenth place by two points behind 47-year-old Australian sport shooter and two-time Olympian Bruce Quick, with a total score of 558 points.
Peter Augustus Rull Sr. was a sport shooter who represented Hong Kong at five editions of the Summer Olympic Games. He competed in the 50 metre rifle prone event each time, finishing 36th in 1960, 70th in 1964, 71st in 1968, 83rd in 1972, and joint-41st in 1976. He also took part in the 50 metre rifle three positions tournament in 1964, where he placed 49th. He was born in Estonia. He also took part in six editions of the Commonwealth Games, the last of which was in 1994, after which he retired from international competition. By career he was a shooting coach for the police and a land bailiff. His son, Peter Rull Jr., competed for Hong Kong as a sport shooter at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Hong Young-ok is a South Korean sport shooter who competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics.
Cynthia Lo Ka Kay is a Hong Kong sport shooter. She has been selected to compete for Hong Kong at the 2004 Summer Olympics, and trains under head coach and eventual 2008 Olympian Wong Fai for the Hong Kong Rifle Association.
The trap was a shooting sports event held as part of the Shooting at the 1984 Summer Olympics programme. The competition was held between July 29 and 31, 1984 at the shooting ranges in Los Angeles. 70 shooters from 42 nations competed. Each nation was limited to two shooters. The event was won by Luciano Giovannetti of Italy, the first person to successfully defend an Olympic title in the trap. It was Italy's fifth victory in the event, most among nations. Giovannetti's win required winning a three-way shoot-off for the medal positions. Francisco Boza of Peru came second in that shoot-off, taking silver to earn Peru's first trap medal. Daniel Carlisle of the United States finished third for bronze.
Fok Ming Shan is a Hong Kong archer. He competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics and the 1988 Summer Olympics.
The Hong Kong bid for the 2006 Asian Games was an unsuccessful bid, first recognised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) on 30 June 2000.
