Shane Day (born 3 August 1949) is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s and 1970s. He played for Western Suburbs and South Sydney in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition.
Day made his first grade debut for South Sydney in 1969 but only managed one first grade appearance over two seasons at the club. In 1972, Day was selected to play for NSW Country against NSW City.
In 1973, Day was recruited by Western Suburbs and became a regular feature in the side. Day missed out on playing in the club's 1974 preliminary final defeat against Eastern Suburbs. In 1978, Day was part of the Western Suburbs side which won the minor premiership under new coach Roy Masters who turned Wests from also-rans to a competitive force.
Day played in both of Western Suburbs finals games which were a 14–10 defeat against Cronulla-Sutherland and the preliminary final defeat against Manly-Warringah. The loss to Manly would also be Day's final game and he retired at the end of 1978. [2] [3] [4]
The North Sydney Bears are an Australian rugby league football club based on Sydney’s North Shore. The club competes in the NSW Cup, having exited the National Rugby League following the 1999 NRL season after 90 years in the premier rugby league competition in Australia. There have been on-going bids to resurrect the club in the NRL as either The Bears, based in Perth and Sydney, or as the Central Coast Bears, based at Gosford. However, the Gosford bid is now unlikely
The Western Suburbs Magpies is an Australian rugby league football club based in the western suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. Formed in 1908, Wests, as the club is commonly referred to, was one of the nine foundation clubs of the first New South Wales Rugby League competition in Australia. The club, as a sole entity, departed the top-flight competition in 1999 after forming a 50–50 joint venture with Balmain Tigers to form the Wests Tigers. The club currently fields sides in the NSW State Cup, Ron Massey Cup (Opens), S.G. Ball Cup and Harold Matthews Cup competitions.
The Newtown Jets are an Australian rugby league football club based in Newtown, a suburb of Sydney's inner west. Ray Brown is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. An Australian international and New South Wales State of Origin representative forward, he played club football in the New South Wales Rugby League premiership for Western Suburbs in 1979 and then spent seven seasons at the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles between 1980 and 1986.
Jason Paul Williams is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. A New Zealand international representative winger, he played his club football in Australia for Sydney's Western Suburbs Magpies, Eastern Suburbs Roosters, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and the Penrith Panthers as well as in England for Salford. Williams played 145 games in the Australian competition from 1987–88 and 1991–98, scoring a total of 63 tries and winning the 1995 ARL Premiership with the Canterbury club. Williams played in 12 test matches for New Zealand between 1991 and 1995, scoring one try. He played in one non-test international on the 1993 Kiwis tour against Wales and two World Cup matches.
