Sheikh Abdur Rashid (born:May 5,1957) is a Bangladeshi government official who has served as the chairman of Petrobangla and additional secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs. [1] In 2024,the Yunus Interim Government brought him back from retirement as an additional secretary in the Department of Secondary and Higher Education. [2] [3] [4] Later,he was promoted to the position of secretary and is currently serving as the 25th Cabinet Secretary of Bangladesh. [5] [6] [7]
Rashid was born on 5 May 1957 in the Satkhira District,East Pakistan,Pakistan. He ranked third in the merit list in both the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) exams. He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in political science from the University of Dhaka. Additionally,he earned an MA in Public Policy and Administration from the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague,Netherlands,and a PhD in public administration from the University of Dhaka in 2005. Rashid ranked fourth in the combined merit list of the 1982 batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service and first in the administration cadre. He then joined the administration,serving as upazila executive officer,additional deputy commissioner,and deputy commissioner in field administration. During the tenure of Khaleda Zia's government,he served as a director in the Prime Minister's Office and later became a director-general there. He also served as the chairman of Petrobangla and as an additional secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs. [8] [6] [7]
After the Awami League government took office in 2009,Rashid was made OSD (officer on special duty) under a false case. Though later proven innocent through investigation,he was informed of this only four years later,by which time he had already retired. [9]
Rashid served as the senior secretary of the Department of Secondary and Higher Education. On October 8,2024,through an official notification,he was appointed as the 25th Cabinet secretary of Bangladesh,effective from October 14,2024,on a two-year contract. [10] [6]
Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5,during the student-popular uprising,an interim government was formed. While retired,he was reappointed to the Department of Secondary and Higher Education on a two-year contract on August 17. The next day,August 18,he was promoted to the position of senior secretary. The Bangladesh Awami League,simply known as Awami League,is one of the major political parties in Bangladesh. The oldest existing political party in the country,the party played a large role in achieving Bangladeshi independence both before and after the Bangladesh Liberation War. It is also one of the two most dominant parties in the country,along with its archrival Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Throughout its tenure as the ruling party from January 6,2009 to August 5,2024,it has been consistently described as authoritarian and dictatorial.

Sayed Farooq Rahman was the chief organizer involved in toppling the Sheikh Mujib regime in Bangladesh. He was convicted and hanged on 28 January 2010 along with co-conspirators Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan,A.K.M. Mohiuddin Ahmed,Mohiuddin Ahmed,and Mohammad Bazlul Huda in Dhaka Central Jail,Old Dhaka,for the murder of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,the founding father and the first president of Bangladesh. Sayed Farooq Rahman and his close ally Khondaker Abdur Rashid were the chief organisers of the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August 1975. He was 2IC of the 1st Bengal Lancers Regiment of the Bangladesh Army who led a group of junior army officers in order to overthrow the regime of Sheikh Mujib and install Khondaker Mushtaque Ahmed as president of Bangladesh.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,the first president of Bangladesh,was assassinated along with most of his family members during the early hours of 15 August 1975 by a group of Bangladesh Army personnel who invaded his residence as part of a coup d'état. The Minister of Commerce,Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad,immediately took control and proclaimed himself head of an interim government from 15 August to 6 November 1975;he was in turn succeeded by Chief Justice Abu Sayem. The assassination marked the first direct military intervention in Bangladesh's civilian administration. Lawrence Lifschultz characterized this incident as an outcome of the Cold War between the United States-influenced Pakistan and the Soviet Union-influenced India. 15 August is annually observed as National Mourning Day,a commemorative day in Bangladesh.
Khandakar Abdur Rashid,better known as Abdur Rashid Tarkabagish was a Bangladeshi politician and Islamic scholar. His career spans from the anti-colonial independence movement to the establishment of both Pakistan and Bangladesh. Tarkabagish was the second president of the All Pakistan Awami Muslim League,and served as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan and later the Parliament of Bangladesh. Despite being a member of the treasury bench,he opposed what he considered to be the repressive mentality of the Nurul Amin government towards the Bengali Language Movement.

The uprising was the result of a series of popular protests that started from 10 October 1990 to topple General Ershad who came to power in 1982 by imposing martial law and replaced a democratically elected President through a bloodless coup.
The military coup in Bangladesh on August 15 of 1975 was launched by mid-ranking army officers in order to assassinate founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,whose administration post-independence grew corrupt and reportedly authoritarian until he established a one-party state-based government led by the socialist party Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League. Mujib,along with his resident family members,were killed during the coup but was survived by his two then-expat daughters,one of them being future prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
