The Shinnecock Canal Railroad Bridge (also known as the K4 Bridge) is a railroad bridge carrying the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road over the Shinnecock Canal in Hampton Bays and Shinnecock Hills, Suffolk County, New York, United States.
The Shinnecock Canal Railroad Bridge stands at a height of approximately 22 feet (6.7 meters) above the water and measures 316 feet (96 meters) in length. [1] [2] [3] [4] The bridge is constructed of steel and uses a truss design. [3] [4]
As Pennsylvania Railroad K4 class steam locomotives regularly crossed the bridge following the replacement of the second span, the bridge became commonly known as "K4 Bridge." [4] Prior to the current span's construction, these locomotives were unable to cross the bridge due to their weight. [4]

The original bridge was constructed in 1870. [1] [2] [4] [5] This girder bridge was replaced by the second bridge – an iron truss bridge – in 1892, as part of the widening of the Shinnecock Canal. [1] [2] [4] [5] Its construction would enable trains using the Montauk Branch – which predates the canal – to travel over the new waterway. [1] [3] It was replaced by a new, near-identical span adjacent to it in 1931; this third bridge, which remains in use today, was placed into service on June 21 of that year. [1] [4]
New York State Route 27 (NY 27) is a 120.58-mile (194.05 km) long state highway that runs east–west from Interstate 278 (I-278) in the New York City borough of Brooklyn to Montauk Point State Park on Long Island, New York. Its two most prominent components are Sunrise Highway and Montauk Highway, the latter of which includes the Montauk Point State Parkway. NY 27 acts as the primary east–west highway on southern Long Island east of the interchange with the Heckscher State Parkway in Islip Terrace. The entire route in Suffolk, Nassau, and Queens counties were designated by the New York State Senate as the POW/MIA Memorial Highway. The highway gives access to every town on the South Shore. NY 27 is the easternmost state route in the state of New York, as well as the longest highway on Long Island.
The Shinnecock Canal is a canal that cuts across the South Fork at Hampton Bays, New York. At 4,700 feet (1,400 m) long, it connects Great Peconic Bay and the north fork of Long Island with Shinnecock Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The canal opened to traffic in 1892.

The Montauk Branch is a rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. The line runs the length of Long Island, 115 miles (185 km) from Long Island City to Montauk. However, in LIRR maps and schedules for public use, the term Montauk Branch refers to the line east of Babylon; service from Jamaica to Babylon is covered by separate Babylon Branch schedules, while the line west of Jamaica is currently unused for passenger service. The Long Beach Branch is an electrified rail line and service owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. The branch begins at Valley Interlocking, just east of Valley Stream station, where it merges with the Far Rockaway Branch to continue west as the Atlantic Branch. East from there the Long Beach Branch parallels the Montauk Branch to Lynbrook station, where it turns south toward Long Beach station. Trains operating on the Long Beach Branch continue west of Valley Stream via the Atlantic Branch to Jamaica station, with most continuing on to Grand Central or Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan. In 2018, the branch recorded an annual ridership of 4,849,085 based on ticket sales, down 1% from 2017.
Lynbrook is a commuter train station on the Montauk Branch and Long Beach Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, located at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Peninsula Boulevard in Lynbrook, Nassau County, New York. It is served by Long Beach Branch trains and select weekday Babylon Branch trains.
Babylon is a station on the Long Island Rail Road in the village of Babylon, New York at Railroad Avenue west of Deer Park Avenue. It is on the Montauk Branch and is the eastern terminus of the Babylon Branch service. To the west is the junction with the Central Branch, which heads northwest to join the Main Line at Bethpage Interlocking southeast of the Bethpage station.

It begins as a two-track line at Long Island City station in Long Island City, Queens, and runs along the middle of Long Island about 95 miles (153 km) to Greenport station in Greenport, Suffolk County. Rockaway Junction was a junction and station on the Long Island Rail Road's Main Line and Montauk Branch in Hillside, Queens, New York City, United States. It was located in the vicinity where the Montauk Branch now crosses over the two eastbound passenger tracks and the two freight tracks of the Main Line, just west of the Hillside Facility, although at the time of the station's existence it was at ground level along with the junction itself.
