The Indian Police Service is a civil service under the All India Services. It replaced the Indian Imperial Police in 1948, a year after India became independent from the British Empire.

The Indian Forest Service (IFS) is the premier forest service of India. .The IFS is one of the three All India Services along with the Indian Administrative Service(IAS) & the Indian Police Service(IPS). It was constituted in the year 1966 under the All India Services Act, 1951.

Gazetted officers in India include all Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, who are classified as Group A officers, as well as State Police Service officers at the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and above. In most police forces, ranks below Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) are considered subordinate ranks, while DSP and above are supervisory ranks. These officers are organized in a structured hierarchical order.

In July 2021, he was appointed as the Police Commissioner of Delhi. Asthana retired from the Indian Police Service (IPS) on 31 July 2022 after receiving a one-year extension.

Her husband Ramasundaram served as a senior state IAS officer in the state of Tamil Nadu until 2011.
Surjeet Singh Deswal also known as S S Deswal is an Indian Police Service officer of 1984 batch, who worked as the Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and retired from same post on 31 August 2021 the India's primary border guarding organization ofIndo-China International Borders, since his appointment on 31 October 2018 with additional charge of Border Security Force. He is a 1984 batch IPS officer of Haryana cadre. He previously served as the Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

Ganapathy is a retired Indian Police Service Officer of the 1986 batch of Uttarakhand cadre, served as the Director General of the National Security Guard from 18 March 2021 to 29 February 2024. He has previously served as Director General of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and Director General of Police, Uttarakhand.
Daljit Singh Chaudhary (born 25 November 1965) is an Indian Police Service officer of 1990 batch UP cadre. Singh is present Director General of the Border Security Force of India and former Director general of Sashastra Seema Bal, was earlier Special Director of Central Reserve Police Force and Additional Director General.
