Shusmita Anis is a Bangladeshi singer, designer, and business executive. She sings Nazrul Sangeet and modern Bengali songs. She is the niece of the artist Firoza Begum.
Shusmita Anis started playing music with her aunt at the age of five. She specializes in her uncle's (Firoza Begum's husband, Kamal Dasgupta) songs. Since an early age, Shusmita Anis has been performing on Bangladesh Television (BTV). She won the first prize in Nazrul Sangeet in 1976 in the annual national competition of performing arts, Notun Kuri, produced by BTV.[ citation needed ]
Firoza Begum directed Shusmita Anis' first three albums. Her first album of modern Bengali songs, A Tribute to Kamal Das Gupta, was released in 1998 by Raga Music, Kolkata, India. In 2006, HMV in Kolkata, India, released her second album of Nazrul Sangeet, Chand Herichey Chand Mukh Tar. [1]
Agniveena, a record company in Bangladesh, released her third album, Sei Gaan Sei Sur, in 2007.[ citation needed ]
In 2008, Gaanchill Music, a record company in Bangladesh, released her fourth album of original Bengali songs, Ichche Nupur. Lyricist Asif Iqbal contributed to the album, while the music composition of two songs on the album was composed by Bangladeshi singers Nakib Khan and Kumar Bishwajit.[ citation needed ]
Her fifth album, titled Shishirer Sporshe Gatha / Sound of Seasons, [2] was released in August 2015 by New Music Paradigm Company. Shusmita Anis dedicated the album to her aunt. The album was released both in Bangladesh and in West Bengal, India. Composer Ibrar Tipu was the music director for this album. The album's making was supervised by tabla player Syed Meher Hossain, son of Ustad Zakir Hussain.[ citation needed ]
On 9 September 2015, commemorating the first anniversary of Firoza Begum's death, Shusmita Anis published an online extended play (EP) titled Mémoire Firoza Begum. The EP consists of original renditions of three songs, tuned by Firoza Begum. Shusmita Anis also launched the Firoza Begum Archive. The music of Bangladesh spans a wide variety of styles. Bangladesh claims some of the most renowned singers, composers and producers in Asia. Music has served the purpose of documenting the lives of the people and was widely patronized by the rulers. It comprises a long tradition of religious and regular song-writing over a period of almost a millennium.
Kazi Nazrul Islam was an Indian poet, writer, journalist, and musician. He is the national poet of Bangladesh. Nazrul produced a large body of poetry, music, messages, novels, and stories with themes that included equality, justice, anti-imperialism, humanity, rebellion against oppression and religious devotion. Nazrul Islam's activism for political and social justice as well as writing a poem titled as "Bidrohī", meaning "the rebel" in Bengali, earned him the title of "Bidrohī Kôbi". His compositions form the avant-garde music genre of Nazrul Gīti.
Bengali music comprises a long tradition of religious and secular song-writing over a period of almost a millennium. Composed with lyrics in the Bengali language, Bengali music spans a wide variety of styles.
Nazrul Sangeet, also Nazrul Geeti, refers to the songs written and composed by Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet of Bangladesh. Nazrul Geeti incorporate revolutionary notions as well as more spiritual, philosophical and romantic themes. Nazrul wrote and composed nearly 4,000 songs, which are widely popular in Bangladesh and India. Some of the most notable Nazrul Sangeet include Notuner Gaan, the national marching song of Bangladesh and O Mon Romzaner Oi Rozar Sheshe, a Bengali Islamic song on the festival of the Bengali celebration of Chand Raat and Eid-ul-Fitr.
Runa Laila is a Bangladeshi playback singer and composer. She started her career in the Pakistani film industry in the late 1960s. Her style of singing is inspired by Pakistani playback singer Ahmed Rushdi and she also made a pair with him after replacing another singer Mala. Her playback singing in films – The Rain (1976), Jadur Banshi (1977), Accident (1989), Ontore Ontore (1994), Devdas (2013) and Priya Tumi Shukhi Hou (2014) - earned her seven Bangladesh National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer. She won the Best Music Composer award for the film Ekti Cinemar Golpo (2018).
Sadya Afreen Mallick is a Bangladeshi singer and journalist. She is an exponent of Nazrul Geeti. She is editor of the Arts and Entertainment section of The Daily Star.
Begum Sufia Kamal was a Bangladeshi poet, feminist leader, and political activist. She took part in the Bengali nationalist movement of the 1950s and civil society leader in independent Bangladesh. She led feminist activism and was a president of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad. She died in 1999 and was the first woman to be given a state funeral in Bangladesh.
Farida Parveen is a Bangladeshi folk singer. Referred to as "the Queen of Lalon song," she received Ekushey Padak in 1987 and Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the film Andho Prem (1993) in 1993.
Firoza Begum was a Bangladeshi Nazrul Geeti singer. She was awarded the Independence Day Award in 1979 by the government of Bangladesh.
Nilufar Yasmin was a Bangladeshi singer of Nazrul Sangeet, Rajanikanta Geeti, Dwijendra Geeti and Atul Prasdi genre. She was the fourth of five Yasmin sisters of Bangladesh music. Her siblings are Farida Yasmin, Fauzia Yasmin, Nazma Yasmin, and Sabina Yasmin. She was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2004 by the Government of Bangladesh. She won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her performance in the film Shuvoda (1986).
Shafin Ahmed was a Bangladeshi rock bassist, singer-songwriter, record producer and politician. He was the lead singer, songwriter and bassist for the Bangladeshi rock band Miles, where he and his elder brother Hamin Ahmed joined in 1979 and have led the band.
Fahmida Nabi is a Bangladeshi singer. She usually vocalizes classical and modern-style songs. She also sang songs of Rabindra Sangeet and Nazrul Geeti genre. She won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her performance in the film Aha! (2007). She also received Channel i Performance Award (2008) and the Meril-Prothom Alo Award (2008). She served as a judge for the reality television music show CloseUp 1. She is an ambassador of Bangladesh Center for Communication Programs (BCCP).
Hamin Ahmed is a Bangladeshi musician and former Bangladesh national cricket player. He is a member of the rock band Miles.
Rezwana Choudhury Bannya is a singer from Bangladesh. She is an exponent of Rabindra Sangeet, the songs written and composed by Rabindranath Tagore. She has won many awards including Bangladesh's highest civilian award, the Independence Day Award (2016) and India's fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri (2024).
Kamal Dasgupta, was a Bangladeshi music director, composer and folk artist active in Hindi and Bengali cinema especially in pre-partition British India. Rāga and thumri were the main elements of his music.
Badrunnesa Dalia is a Bangladeshi mainstream Nazrul Sangeet and Rabindra Sangeet singer, performer and a music teacher. She is noted for her versatility as a multi-genre artist (singer).
