Shyam Prabhakar Mardikar (born 23 March 1971) is The Group Chief Technology Officer - Mobility at Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (India), an Indian multinational telecommunications services company, headquartered in [ Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra], India, it operates a national LTE network with coverage across all 22 telecom circles. Jio does not offer 2G or 3G service, and instead uses voice over LTE to provide voice service on its network.

Personal background

Shyam Prabhakar Mardikar was born on 23 March 1971 in Jabalpur. Shyam attended various schools in Madhya Pradesh including Holy Cross Convent in Raipur, Miss Hill School in Gwalior and St Xavier's in Surguja (now Chhattisgarh). He received his Bachelors in Telecommunications Engineering from Jabalpur Engineering College in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.[ citation needed ]

Career

Shyam started his career in 1994 with C-DOT as a software research engineer and held various operational and management positions in Airtel. He also served as Deputy General Manager in Department of Telecommunications, India. He was also a member of GSMA's executive management committee. While talking about managed services for telecom sector in his first stint at airtel, Shyam was quoted saying, "Telecom sells like fish" but the operators have found that it is more cost beneficial to employ fishermen to catch the fish and for them to focus on marketing it. Shyam moved out of Airtel later in 2010 and joined Lebara group as The Chief Technology Officer. He was based out of London; where he was responsible for implementation & execution of the Company's technology strategy and aligning the Technology Vision with the Business Strategy across its 7 countries. Shyam has held many key roles in Airtel, his latest one being The Chief Technology Officer of Mobile Networks. Shyam, earlier, held the role of the Chief - Strategy, Architecture and Engineering at Airtel. In this role, Shyam was instrumental for transforming the network architecture to a next generation, mobile broad band enabled, data services centric network. He was also instrumental in driving the overall strategy on the technology standards across different domains to ensure sustaining Airtel's leadership position on the technology front and set the benchmark standards for the industry. Along with his role at Bharti Airtel, Shyam also chaired the technology committee of Cellular Operators Association of India

In telecommunications, long-term evolution (LTE) is a standard for wireless broadband communication for mobile devices and data terminals, based on the GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA standards. It improves on those standards' capacity and speed by using a different radio interface and core network improvements. LTE is the upgrade path for carriers with both GSM/UMTS networks and CDMA2000 networks. Because LTE frequencies and bands differ from country to country, only multi-band phones can use LTE in all countries where it is supported.

The Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance is a mobile telecommunications association of mobile operators, vendors, manufacturers and research institutes. It was founded by major mobile operators in 2006 as an open forum to evaluate candidate technologies to develop a common view of solutions for the next evolution of wireless networks. Its objective is to ensure the successful commercial launch of future mobile broadband networks through a roadmap for technology and friendly user trials. Its office is in Frankfurt, Germany.

3G mobile telephony was relatively slow to be adopted globally. In some instances, 3G networks do not use the same radio frequencies as 2G so mobile operators must build entirely new networks and license entirely new frequencies, especially so to achieve high data transmission rates. Other delays were due to the expenses of upgrading transmission hardware, especially for UMTS, whose deployment required the replacement of most broadcast towers. Due to these issues and difficulties with deployment, many carriers delayed acquisition of these updated capabilities.

KaiOS is a mobile Linux distribution for keypad feature phones based on the Firefox OS open-source project. It is developed by KaiOS Technologies Limited; a company based in Hong Kong, whose largest shareholder is Chinese electronics conglomerate TCL Corporation. Altiostar is a company that provides open virtual radio access network (vRAN) technology. The company is headquartered just outside of Boston, Massachusetts, with offices in Japan, Italy, the U.K., Mexico and India. The company is a subsidiary of Rakuten. Founded in 2011 by President and CEO, Ashraf Dahod, Altiostar is focused on open, virtual RAN software that they claim can integrate operation of equipment from multiple vendors.
