Siddu Nyamagouda (1950-2018),also known as Barrage Siddu,was an Indian politician who served as the Minister of State for Coal in the Government of India. He also held the position of MLC and was elected twice as Member of the Legislative Assembly to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 2013 and 2018 from the Jamakhandi constituency in Bagalkote district. He was born on 5 August 1950 in Jamakhandi of Bagalkot district,Karnataka. He completed his schooling from P. B. High School in Jamakhandi and later completed his Bachelor of Science from Karnatak University in Dharwad. [5]
He contested Lok Sabha election in 1991 from Bagalkot against the former Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde whom he defeated by a considerable margin [6] and ultimately became Minister of State for Coal in the P. V. Narasimha Rao's cabinet. After that,he became MLC and was elected MLA of Jamkhandi in 2013 Assembly elections and got re-elected in the recent state assembly election. [4]
Social and economic upliftment of farmers;mobilised farmers to construct rupee one crore barrage across river Krishna without Govt. aid which provided irrigation lo 30,000 acres of land and drinking water to 2.5 lakh people and employment opportunities to 1.5 lakh people;this project is the first private dam in the country constructed by the people themselves.
He is known for building India's first private dam in 1989. The dam is named as Shrama Bindu Sagar and is built across Krishna River at Chikkapadasalagi village in Jamakhandi. The construction of dam took off in 1983 and the project drew the attention of international media. [4] When the former chief minister of Karnataka Ramakrishna Hegde led government refused to fund the project owing to political reasons even though farmers would pay for a quarter of the expenses,he mobilized the farmers to build the barrage on their own. The Dam provided irrigation lo 30,000 acres of land and drinking water to 2.5 lakh people and employment opportunities to 1.5 lakh people. [7] Farmers pooled their money and worked for six months to build the barrage. This accomplishment catapulted Siddu to national politics. He contested Lok Sabha election in 1991 against Ramakrishna Hegde and defeated him by considerable margin which paved the way for him to become minister in the P. V. Narasimha Rao's cabinet. [6]
He died on 28 May 2018 near Tulasigeri on the way back to his constituency from New Delhi when his car's tire exploded,causing him to lose control and hit a barrier. He had a wife,two sons and three daughters. [5] [8]
Haradanahalli Doddegowda Deve Gowda is an Indian politician who was Prime Minister of India from 1 June 1996 to 21 April 1997. He was previously the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1994 to 1996. He presently is a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Karnataka. He is the national president of the Janata Dal (Secular) party. Born in a farming family,he joined the Indian National Congress party in 1953,and remained a member until 1962. He was imprisoned during the Emergency. He became President of the state unit of Janata Dal in 1994,and was considered to be a driving force in the party's victory in Karnataka. He served as the 8th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1994 to 1996. In the 1996 general elections,no party won enough seats to form a government. When the United Front,a coalition of regional parties,formed the central government with the support of the Congress,Deve Gowda was unexpectedly chosen to head the government after V. P. Singh and Jyoti Basu declined the post and he was elected Prime Minister. During his tenure as prime minister,he also served as Home Minister for some time. His prime ministerial tenure lasted for less than a year. After his prime ministerial tenure,he was elected to the 12th (1998),14th (2004),15th,and 16th Lok Sabha,as Member of Parliament for the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency. He lost Lok Sabha elections in 2019 from Tumkuru but has been elected to Rajya Sabha since.
Siddaramaiah,also referred to by his nickname Siddu,is an Indian politician who is serving as the 22nd Chief Minister of Karnataka from 20 May 2023. He also held that position previously from 2013 to 2018,being only the second person to hold that office for a full five-year term. He belongs to the Indian National Congress and is presently the leader of the Congress Legislative Party. He represented the Varuna Assembly constituency from 2023,previously from 2008 to 2018,Badami Assembly constituency from 2018 to 2023,and from Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency from 2004 to 2007,1994 to 1999 and from 1983 to 1989 in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1996 to 1999 and from 2004 to 2005 while he was a member of the Janata Dal and Janata Dal (Secular). He also served as the Leader of the Opposition in Karnataka Legislative Assembly on two occasions from 2019 to 2023 and from 2009 to 2013. Siddaramaiah was a member of various Janata Parivar factions for several years.
Ramakrishna Mahabaleshwar Hegde was an Indian politician who served as the third Chief Minister of Karnataka for three terms between 1983 and 1988. He was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1957,1962,1967,1983,1985 and 1989,and to the Rajya Sabha for two terms,1978–83 and 1996–2002. He also served as Minister of Commerce and Industry in the Union government (1998–1999).
