Sierra Towers is a residential 31-story high-rise condominium building in West Hollywood, California, United States. located at 9255 Doheny Road, adjacent to Beverly Hills. It was designed by Beverly Hills mid-century modern architect Jack A. Charney, who studied under Richard Neutra and Rudolph Schindler. [1] Completed in 1965 as an apartment building, it was originally called the Spoon Apartment Building.
Sierra Towers was developed in 1965 for US$12 million (equivalent to $88.5 million in 2023) by Walter and Leo Minskoff, whose family firm also built New York's Minskoff Theatre. [1] The building is known for being more than 15 stories taller than any other building within a 2-mile (3.2 km) radius. Due to Sierra Towers' unique positioning at the base of a hill (the same hill from which Beverly Hills gets its name), the building is the highest residential tower in the greater Los Angeles Area relative to sea level. The building is said to get its plural name from scuttled original plans to build a second tower. [1]
Sierra Towers was first operated as a rental property, but following its purchase by New York real estate investor Helmsley Spear Inc., the building was converted to condominiums in 1974. [1] A number of celebrities own condominiums in the 146-unit building, [1] including Karyn White, Diahann Carroll, Sandra Bullock, Kelly Osbourne, Robert Sherman, Jim Morris, Brody Jenner, Emma Watson, and Meg Whitman (since 2018). Historically, residents and owners have included: Joan Collins (25th floor, –2017); [3] Lily Collins (–2019); [4] PJ Harvey (29th floor, 2003–2018); [5] Matthew Perry (–2011); [6] and Lindsay Lohan (2006–2007). [7] [8]
In 2013, singer-actress Cher sold her 2,302 square feet (213.9 square metres) two-story condominium, created by combining two one-bedroom units on the 26th and 27th floors, for US$5.25 million (equivalent to $6.8 million in 2023). [9] In early 2014, Sandra Bullock purchased a 1,672 square feet (155.3 square metres) unit in the southeast corner of the building's 22nd floor for $3.35 million (equivalent to $4.2 million in 2023); [10] in 2017, she bought a second, 2,101 square feet (195.2 square metres) unit on the 20th floor, for $5.13 million (equivalent to $6.3 million in 2023), [11] while placing her original unit on the rental market at the same time, at $22,000 per month (equivalent to $27,000 per month in 2023). [10] Joan Collins's former 2,300 square feet (210 square metres) residence, on the 25th floor, was sold in 2017 for $4.4 million (equivalent to $5.4 million in 2023). [12] In 2020, Courteney Cox sold her 1,315 square feet (122.2 square metres) unit on the same floor for $2.9 million (equivalent to $3.4 million in 2023). [13]
The Wall Street Journal reported that Evan Metropoulos, a principal at his family's investment firm Metropoulos & Co., has bought and sold multiple units in the building. [14] He purchased a unit in 2014 for $3.5 million (equivalent to $4.4 million in 2023), selling it in 2016 for $4.65 million (equivalent to $5.8 million in 2023). [14] He bought two units, to be used as staff quarters, plus two penthouse units, over the course of 2012 to 2015, including expenditures of $30 million (equivalent to $38 million in 2023) to buy and combine the two penthouse units into one unit totalling 7,000 square feet (650 square metres). [14] [15] By 2018, walls had been removed to create the single penthouse unit, but renovations were still incomplete, so Metropoulos –who had, while waiting, purchased a Beverly Hills mansion –listed all his Sierra Towers units for sale at a combined price of $58 million (equivalent to $69.3 million in 2023); [14] the listing was reduced to $33.5 million (equivalent to $37.2 million in 2023) by 2021, when Metropoulos decided to sell the properties by auction, with no reserve price. In 2023, Katy Perry purchased a penthouse apartment for $11 million (equivalent to $11 million in 2023). [16]
The Playboy Mansion, also known as the Playboy Mansion West, is the former home of Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner, who lived there from 1971 until his death in 2017. Barbi Benton convinced Hefner to buy the home located in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, California, near Beverly Hills. From the 1970s onward, the mansion became the location of lavish parties held by Hefner which were often attended by celebrities and socialites. It is currently owned by Daren Metropoulos, the son of billionaire investor Dean Metropoulos, and is used for corporate activities. It also serves as a location for television production, magazine photography, charitable events, and civic functions.
The Trump International Hotel Las Vegas is a 64-story hotel, condominium, and timeshare located on Fashion Show Drive in Paradise, Nevada, United States, named for part owner Donald Trump. It is located down the street from Wynn Las Vegas, behind the former site of the New Frontier Hotel and Casino on 3.46 acres (14,000 m2), near the Fashion Show Mall, and features both non-residential hotel condominiums and residential condominiums. The exterior glass is infused with gold.
Olympic Tower is a 51-story, 620 ft-tall (190 m) building at 641 and 645 Fifth Avenue, between 51st and 52nd Streets, in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the mixed-use development contains condominium apartments, office space, and retail shops. The tower is named after Olympic Airways, whose president Aristotle Onassis jointly developed the tower with the Arlen Realty and Development Corporation between 1971 and 1974. It was the first skyscraper to be constructed within a special zoning district to encourage retail and mixed-use development along Fifth Avenue.
The Eastern Columbia Building, also known as the Eastern Columbia Lofts, is a thirteen-story Art Deco building designed by Claud Beelman located at 849 S. Broadway in the Broadway Theater District of Downtown Los Angeles. It opened on September 12, 1930, after just nine months of construction. It was built at a cost of $1.25 million as the new headquarters and 39th store for the Eastern-Columbia Department Store, whose component Eastern and Columbia stores were founded by Adolph Sieroty and family. At the time of construction, the City of Los Angeles enforced a height limit of 150 feet (46 m), however the decorative clock tower was granted an exemption, allowing the clock a total height of 264 feet (80 m). J. V. McNeil Company was the general contractor.
The Palmolive Building, formerly the Playboy Building, is a 37-story Art Deco building at 919 N. Michigan Avenue in Chicago.
The Murano is a residential skyscraper in Center City Philadelphia. Part of a condominium boom occurring in the city, the Murano was announced in 2005 and was developed jointly by Thomas Properties Group and P&A Associates. The building, named after Murano, Italy, was completed in 2008 at a cost of US$165 million. The site, previously occupied by a parking lot, was the location of the Erlanger Theatre from 1927 to 1978.
Palms Place is a 47-story condo hotel in Paradise, Nevada, near the Las Vegas Strip. It is connected to the Palms Casino Resort. The project was announced in March 2005, to capitalize on a condominium boom occurring in Las Vegas at the time. Groundbreaking took place in May 2006, and the tower was topped off in August 2007. Palms Place opened in 2008, during the Great Recession, and some buyers had difficulty completing their unit purchases because of poor economic conditions.
Sky Las Vegas is a 45-story luxury high-rise condominium tower with 409 units, situated on a 3-acre site on the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. A two-story retail project had initially been planned for the site in 2001, although it ultimately did not materialize. Plans for Sky Las Vegas were announced in July 2004, with construction beginning the following year and its opening occurring in May 2007.
The Century is a 42-story, 146.5 m (481 ft) condominium skyscraper in Century City, California. Completed in late 2009, the building has 42 floors, making it the 22nd tallest building in Los Angeles. The 140 unit building was designed by the firm of the 2011 Driehaus Prize winner, Robert A.M. Stern Architects.
Casa Condominio Residenza, or The CASA, is a high-rise condominium building at 33 Charles Street East near the intersection of Bloor Street and Yonge Street in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It features a New Modernist design by architectsAlliance emphasizing glass curtain wall, with balconies wrapped around the building from the podium to the top. An overhanging concrete slab concludes the design at the roof of the final floor. It is lit from underneath at night. The balconies themselves have transparent glazed balustrades, and the podium's main facade facing Charles Street also makes use of glass curtain wall extensively, framed with black brick.
432 Park Avenue is a residential skyscraper at 57th Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, United States. The 1,396-foot-tall (425.5 m) tower was developed by CIM Group and Harry B. Macklowe and designed by Rafael Viñoly. A part of Billionaires' Row, 432 Park Avenue has some of the most expensive residences in the city, with the median unit selling for tens of millions of dollars. At the time of its completion in 2015, 432 Park Avenue was the third-tallest building in the United States and the tallest residential building in the world. As of 2023, it is the sixth-tallest building in the United States, the fifth-tallest building in New York City, and the third-tallest residential building in the world.
One Queensridge Place is the name given to two residential skyscrapers located on the west side of the Las Vegas Valley in the Queensridge neighborhood adjacent to the master planned community of Summerlin, Nevada. Construction began in 2005 and concluded in 2007. The buildings are twins, measuring approximately 233.5 feet (71.2 m) high. Each tower has 20 constructed floors with curtain wall facades and distinctive architecture. The resulting large windows allow for views of the Las Vegas Strip and Red Rock Canyon.
Central Park Tower is a residential supertall skyscraper at 225 West 57th Street, along Billionaires' Row, in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City, New York, U.S. Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, the building rises 1,550 feet (472.4 m) with 98 above-ground stories and three basement stories, although the top story is numbered 136. Central Park Tower is the second-tallest building in New York City, the United States, and the Western Hemisphere; the 15th tallest building in the world; the tallest primarily residential building in the world; and the tallest building outside Asia by roof height.
4/C, also known as 4th & Columbia, is a proposed supertall skyscraper in Seattle, Washington, United States. If built, the 1,020-foot-tall (310 m), 91-story tower would be the tallest in Seattle, surpassing the neighboring Columbia Center, and the first supertall in the Pacific Northwest. The project has been under development by Miami-based Crescent Heights since 2015 and undergone several design changes and modifications under three architecture firms. As of 2023, 4/C is expected to have 1,090 residential units—apartments up to the 64th floor and condominiums from the 65th to 90th floor—along with several coworking and retail spaces. The latest version was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.
99 Hudson is a 79-story condominium in Jersey City, New Jersey. It is the tallest building in Jersey City and the state of New Jersey, and the 46th tallest building in the United States. It is also the tallest residential building in the United States outside of New York City and Chicago. Developed by China Overseas America, 99 Hudson is the first residential project in the U.S. for the firm. The 1.4 million square-foot building includes 781 condominium units ranging from studios to three bedrooms.
Four Seasons Private Residences at 706 Mission Street, San Francisco is a 43-story, 510 ft (160 m) residential skyscraper under construction in the South of Market district of San Francisco, California. Located across the street from Yerba Buena Gardens and Moscone Center, the tower site is bounded by Mission Street on the south and 3rd Street on the east, and will incorporate the historic Aronson Building in its design. The tower will contain up to 190 condominiums on the upper floors and a permanent home for the Mexican Museum on the bottom four floors.
The Ivana Las Vegas was a proposed 73-floor, 923-foot condominium high-rise, named after Ivana Trump. The project was initially announced in August 2004, as The Summit, and was to be constructed on the 2.17-acre site of the closed Holy Cow Casino and Brewery, located on the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada. Trump became involved with the project in June 2005, when it was renamed.
The Emerald is a mixed-use 40-story skyscraper in downtown Seattle, Washington, United States. The tower includes 262 luxury condominiums, retail space, and amenity spaces on outdoor terraces. It began construction in July 2017 and was completed in October 2020.
One High Line is a pair of buildings in New York City designed by architectural firm BIG. The complex will include 247 condominiums, a 137-room Six Senses hotel, 90,000 square feet (8,400 m2) of retail space, art space, a spa and club.
