Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority or SJDA was established in the year 1980 and has been responsible of Planning & Development of Siliguri - Jalpaiguri Area. It came in existence under the West Bengal Town and Country (Planning & Development) Act 1979 (West Bengal Act - XIII of 1979).
It was founded on 1 April 1980 and Sri B C Ghosh was the first Chairman. [1]
The area covers Jalpaiguri and Siliguri Police Stations and all the mouzas of Phansidewa Police Station and Khoribari Block in the district of Darjeeling excluding the areas declared as reserved or protected Forests.
The area also covers Rajganj Police Station & 14 no. of mouza of Maynaguri Police Station & Kotwali Police Station in the Sadar Sub division of the district of Jalpaiguri along with the West bank of the River Teesta excluding the areas declared as reserved or protected forests.
Mal Municipality and entire Malbazar Block under Mal Police Station is also included.
The total area covered by SJDA is 2222.59 km2. As per 2011 census the population of SJDA was 2.37 million. [2]
The main object was Planning & Development. Siliguri Jalpaiguri Planning area as declared by Govt. of West Bengal vide notification no - 1877 - T & CP/1R - 6/1980 dtd. 17.3.1980. SJDA is the nodal agency for planning and development of the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Planning Area (SJPA) and works by Coordinating all departments and agencies.
Main role includes creating infrastructure and real estate development in the region and providing facilities to investors. SJDA's has prepared "Perspective Plan 2025" is a visionary road map for the planned development of the SJPA. [3] It is also proposed to maintain a land bank for investment purposes in and around the area. [4]

The station lies on New Jalpaiguri–Siliguri–New Mal Junction–Hasimara–Alipurduar Junction route under Alipurduar division of Northeast Frontier Railway. It is also the originating point of the Sevoke-Rangpo Railway Line which is under construction. This railway station is a scenic railway station as it falls under Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary just ahead of Sevoke Railway Bridge over river Teesta.
The New Mal–Changrabandha–New Cooch Behar line are a set of 2 lines which connect Changrabandha, a border transit point near Indo-Bangladesh border in Cooch Behar district with the stations of New Mal in Jalpaiguri district and New Cooch Behar in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal. It is under the jurisdiction of Northeast Frontier Railway. The Malbazar–Changrabandha section of the line was a metre-gauge line, before its gauge conversion began on 2002. The Malbazar–Changrabandha section was re-opened to public on 20 January 2016 after gauge conversion. The New Changrabandha–New Cooch Behar broad-gauge line was built as an extension as a part of the New Maynaguri–Jogighopa rail line to provide an alternate link from North Bengal to Assam and was opened to public on 21 February 2016.
