Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde (French : Saint-Gilles-lez-Termonde) is a part of the municipality of Dendermonde in the Denderstreek in East Flanders in Belgium, a typical agricultural village in the Dendervallei near the junction of the railroads to Ghent, Mechelen and Brussels. It was formerly known as Zwijveke. [2]

Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde is birthplace to poet Emmanuel Hiel (1834 - 1894) and literature historian Wies Moens (1898 - 1982).

Every year, on the first Sunday of September, a parade of flower-covered floats, built in the different districts, is held in Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde.

On 23 January 2009, a man attacked a children's daycare centre in the village, killing at least three people and wounding as many as twenty. [3] Italian singer Luciano Ligabue dedicated to the victims a song, Quando mi vieni a prendere? (Dendermonde 23/01/09) inserted in his 2010 album, Arrivederci, Mostro!. [4]

There is one cinema in Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde, named Cinema Albert. It is one of the oldest cinemas in Belgium: it has been in business since 1914 and expanded after the First World War. It has been a family business from the start, and is still run by the same family since 1914. It ranks 36th in the Belgian list of top cinemas.

In 1931, a war monument was erected at Burgemeester Potiaulaan in remembrance of the victims of the First World War. It was designed by Jules Tijtgat, an engineer from Ghent.

Each year in the spring, the Dendermonde Rugby Club organises a rugby cup in Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde.

On the first Sunday of September, a Bloemencorso is organised, a flower parade in which floats, cars and boats are decorated with flowers.

The Dendermonde nursery attack was a stabbing attack on the Fabeltjesland daycare centre in the Flemish village of Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde in Dendermonde, Belgium, at 10:00 a.m. CET on January 23, 2009. Three people were stabbed to death, and twelve were mutilated in the attack. The suspect has been linked to a separate murder of an elderly lady and police have suggested he was plotting more nursery attacks. The daycare centre where the initial attack occurred is expected never to reopen.

Arrivederci, mostro! is the tenth studio album by Italian rock singer-songwriter Luciano Ligabue. Produced by Corrado Rustici, the album was released on 11 May 2010, exactly 20 years after the release of Ligabue's self-titled debut album. After spending its first four weeks at number one on the Italian Albums Chart, Arrivederci, mostro! returned to the top spot three additional times, completing a chart run of nine non-consecutive weeks atop the chart. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Battle of Buggenhout</span> World War I battle in East Flanders, Belgium

The Battle of Buggenhout was fought at the beginning of the First World War in Belgium at Buggenhout, a municipality between Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels. The Belgian army sortied from Antwerp against German troops to the south. The Belgians planned to exploit German troop movements away from Antwerp and to assist the French army on the Marne. King Albert I the Belgian Commander in Chief, saw that the Germans had strengthened most of their positions south of Antwerp and reduced the attack to an operation against Landwehr Brigade 37, which had advanced from Brussels towards Dendermonde.
