Sintonia is a Brazilian crime teen drama television series created and directed by Kondzilla that premiered on Netflix on August 9, 2019. [1] [2]
Narrated from the perspectives of the three characters Doni, Nando, and Rita who grew up together, the series follows the interconnectedness of music, drug trafficking and religion in a peripheral neighborhood of São Paulo. [3] [4]

The producer company Losbragas, who had already produced the comedy series Samantha! for Netflix, learned of Kondzilla's idea of making a short film about three young teenagers from the favela who wanted to buy expensive sneakers. After negotiations, the idea of the short film turned to a project of a series and the characters gained different goals and a more complex storyline. [6]
On June 17, 2019, the teaser trailer for the series was released. [7] The first full trailer was released by Netflix on July 11, 2019. [8]
The red carpet premiere of Sintonia took place on July 30, 2019, at the Cinemateca Brasileira in São Paulo, where the first two episodes were previewed. [9]
For the first time in an original production, Netflix released the first episode of Sintonia on YouTube as a promotion for the series. The episode became available from August 9, until August 11, 2019, at KondZilla's YouTube channel. [10]
The music for the series was composed by Tropkillaz's electronic music duo of DJs Zegon and Lauds. The series also features original songs for the character MC Doni (performed by Jottapê) and produced by MC EZ. [11] The soundtrack album was released to music streaming services such as Spotify, on August 17, 2019. [12]
Joel Keller from Decider described Sintonia as a "fascinating look at life in São Paulo's favelas, where people are creative and hopeful, despite difficult circumstances." [13]
Favela is an umbrella name for several types of impoverished neighborhoods in Brazil. The term, which means slum or ghetto, was first used in the Slum of Providência in the center of Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th century, which was built by soldiers who had lived under the favela trees in Bahia and had nowhere to live following the Canudos War. Some of the last settlements were called bairros africanos. Over the years, many former enslaved Africans moved in. Even before the first favela came into being, poor citizens were pushed away from the city and forced to live in the far suburbs.
The Primeiro Comando da Capital is a Brazilian organized crime syndicate. According to a 2023 The Economist report, the PCC is Latin America's biggest drug gang, with a membership of 40,000 lifetime members plus 60,000 "contractors". Its name refers to the São Paulo state capital, the city of São Paulo.
Funk carioca, also known as favela funk, in other parts of the world as baile funk and Brazilian funk, or even simply funk, is a hip hop-influenced music genre from Rio de Janeiro, blending the rap subgenres of Miami bass and gangsta rap. Despite its name, funk carioca has no musical correlation with the American funk by any means.
Lia Clark, the stage name of Rhael Lima de Oliveira, is a Brazilian singer and drag queen. Born in Santos, São Paulo, Rhael grew up listening to Brazilian funk. Inspired by Valesca Popozuda and Tati Quebra-Barraco, in 2014, Rhael became the drag queen "Lia Clark", working as DJ known to play funk. Two years later, the artist came to prominence as a singer after the release of "Trava Trava". A hit on Spotify and YouTube, it led to a national tour and to the release of the extended play (EP) Clark Boom in 2016. In the following year, the EP spawned hits like "Chifrudo", "TOME CUrtindo" and "Boquetáxi". The first two marked collaborations with trans singer Mulher Pepita and drag queen Pabllo Vittar respectively, while the latter was involved in a controversy when her YouTube video was restricted because of alleged improper sexual content.
Larissa de Macedo Machado, known professionally as Anitta, is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, dancer, actress, and occasional television host. She has been referred to as the "Queen of Brazilian Pop". She has received numerous accolades, including four Latin American Music Awards, three MTV Music Video Awards, eight MTV Europe Music Awards, and nominations for a Grammy Award and eight Latin Grammy Awards.
João Miguel Serrano Leonelli, known professionally as João Miguel, is a Brazilian actor. He is known to international audiences for his role in the Netflix series 3%.
Funk ostentação is a Brazilian music style highly based on American hip hop created in São Paulo in 2008. The central theme addressed in the songs is conspicuous consumption, and many funk ostentação artists sing about cars, motorcycles, drink, women, and ambitions to leave the favela and achieve life goals.

He is the founder of KondZilla Records, which is a music video production company and record label often credited for being the main popularizer of funk ostentação. He currently owns the largest YouTube channel in Brazil and Latin America, and the third largest music channel in the world, with 66 million subscribers and 37 billion views. In addition to his music videos, he is also the creator and director of the Netflix drama Sintonia.
Maisa da Silva Andrade is an actress, presenter and former Brazilian singer. She was discovered at the age of three, when she participated in a group of freshmen on the Programa Raul Gil, on RecordTV and Band. Two years later, she was hired by SBT to present the programs Sábado Animado, Domingo Animado and Bom Dia & Cia, gaining greater prominence when sharing the show Pergunte a Maisa with boss Silvio Santos. As an actress, she gained fame through her role as Valéria Ferreira in Carrossel.
