The Society for Hematology and Stem Cells (formerly the International Society for Experimental Hematology) is a learned society which deals with hematology, the study of the blood system and its diseases, including those caused by exposure to nuclear radiation. It was founded in 1950, and held its first official meeting in Milwaukee in 1972. [1] Its mission statement is: "To promote the scientific knowledge and clinical application of basic hematology, immunology, stem cell research, cell and gene therapy and related aspects of research through publications, discussions, scientific meetings and the support of young investigators." [2]

Dr. Margaret Goodell of the Baylor College of Medicine's Center for Cell and Gene Therapy is the current president. [3]

At the opening ceremony of the 30th annual meeting of ISEH, Emperor Akihito of Japan praised the "remarkable results obtained by the ISEH today in the treatment of radiation-related disorders", by contrast to the lack of any effective treatment for such disorders in 1945 when atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. [4]

The society has an official journal, Experimental Hematology , which has an impact factor of 2.907.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes too many lymphocytes. Early on there are typically no symptoms. Later non-painful lymph node swelling, feeling tired, fever, night sweats, or weight loss for no clear reason may occur. Enlargement of the spleen and low red blood cells (anemia) may also occur. It typically worsens gradually over years.

E. Donnall Thomas American hematologist

Edward Donnall "Don" Thomas was an American physician, professor emeritus at the University of Washington, and director emeritus of the clinical research division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. In 1990 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Joseph E. Murray for the development of cell and organ transplantation. Thomas and his wife and research partner Dottie Thomas developed bone marrow transplantation as a treatment for leukemia.

To be considered a primary immunodeficiency (PID), the cause of the immune deficiency must not be secondary in nature. While there are over 430 recognized PIDs as of 2019, most are very rare. About 1 in 500 people in the United States are born with a primary immunodeficiency. There are currently limited treatments available for these conditions; most are specific to a particular type of PID. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Shimon Slavin Israeli professor of medicine

Shimon Slavin, M.D., is an Israeli professor of medicine. Slavin pioneered the use of immunotherapy mediated by allogeneic donor lymphocytes and innovative methods for stem cell transplantation for the cure of hematological malignancies and solid tumors, and using hematopoietic stem cells for induction of transplantation tolerance to bone marrow and donor allografts.

Bob Löwenberg is a clinical hematologist/investigator. He is Professor of Hematology at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
