Tanjim Ahmad Sohel Taj [lower-alpha 1] (born 5 January 1970) [2] better known as just Sohel Taj, is a fitness and health activist, bodybuilder and retired Bangladesh Awami League politician and former State Minister of Home Affairs. He is the son of Bangladesh's first Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmad. [3]
Taj was born in Dhaka on 5 January 1970 to Tajuddin Ahmad, who was the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Syeda Zohra Tajuddin, a former convenor and presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League. [2] He has three sisters, Sharmin Ahmad Reepi, Simeen Hussain Rimi and Mahjabin Ahmad Mimi. [4] He obtained bachelor of business administration degree from the American University in Bulgaria and masters from Gordon University in the United States in 2008. [2] His father was assassinated when he was 5 years old.
Taj was elected a member of Parliament in 2001 with Bangladesh Awami League nomination. He served as a member of standing committee on the ministry of youth and sports. He was re-elected from the same constituency in 2008 and joined the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's cabinet as the state minister of home affairs on 6 January 2009 and resigned from the position on 31 May the same year. Taj resigned from Bangladesh's parliament, where he had represented the Gazipur-4 constituency on 23 April 2012. [6] [7] His sister Simeen Hussain Rimi was later elected MP to replace him in his former constituency. [8]
Sohel Taj launched the health and fitness related hit television show Hotline Commando on 20 July 2019 focusing on social issues of Bangladesh. He is the creator and host of the show. The program aired on private satellite channel RTV and is scheduled to run for 12 episodes. Due to COVID-19, the show has been on break after airing 6 episodes. It has reached a combined viewership (TV and social media) of over 20 million. [9] [10]
During the Quota Reform Movement, Sohel Taj went to the DB office to meet the six co-ordinators of the movement but he was not allowed to meet them. He said that his decision to meet them was motivated by his conscience. [11] After the fall of AL government, questions arose about whether Sohel Taj will return to politics. Taj refused to return labelling the country’s politics as "dirty." He also informed that his resignation after serving only a few days as state minister was due to rampant corruption and irregularities prevalent in the administration. [12] He also reported that his cousin was kept into the infamous secret prison Aynaghar for 11 days. [13]
The Bangladesh Awami League, simply known as Awami League, is one of the major political parties in Bangladesh. The oldest existing political party in the country, the party played a large role in achieving Bangladeshi independence both before and after the Bangladesh Liberation War. It is also one of the two most dominant parties in the country, along with its archrival Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Throughout its tenure as the ruling party from January 6, 2009 to August 5, 2024, it has been consistently described as authoritarian, dictatorial and fascism.
Syed Nazrul Islam was a Bangladeshi politician and a senior leader of the Awami League. During the Bangladesh Liberation War, he was declared as the Vice President of Bangladesh by the Provisional Government. He served as the Acting President in the absence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad was a Bangladeshi politician. He was the Minister of Commerce in the third Mujib Rahman ministry under Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and assumed the presidency of Bangladesh after the Assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975. He praised the assassins as "sons of the sun" and put cabinet ministers loyal to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in jail. He was himself deposed by another coup, less than three months later on November 3, 1975.
Tajuddin Ahmad was a Bangladeshi politician. He led the Provisional Government of Bangladesh as its prime minister during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 and is regarded as one of the most instrumental figures in the birth of Bangladesh.

The 21 August 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina, the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. Hasina also sustained some injuries in the attack. The involvement of BNP-Jamaat led government is still debated.
Abdul Latif Siddiqui is a former Bangladesh Awami League politician. He is a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Tangail-4 constituency. He served as the Minister of Textiles and Jute in the second Hasina ministry and Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology in the third Hasina ministry.

Nurul Islam Nahid is a Bangladeshi politician and author. He served as a member of the Bangladeshi parliament from the Sylhet-6 constituency for 15 years, being elected in 1996, 2008, 2014, and 2018. He was also the country's Minister of Education from 2014 to 2018.
Syeda Zohra Tajuddin was a Bangladesh Awami League politician. She was a leader of the party and served as its president from 1980 to 1981. She was the wife of the first prime minister Tajuddin Ahmad.

She was elected in the 10th Parliamentary Elections held on 5 January 2014 and in the 11th Parliamentary Elections on 31 December 2018. She is chairperson of the parliamentary standing committee of the Ministry of Culture. In November 2022, she became a member of Awami League Presidium.

Afsaruddin Ahmad Khan was a Bangladesh Awami League politician. He served as a Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Gazipur-4 constituency during 1996–2001 and the state minister for housing and public works during 1996–1997. He was the younger brother of Tajuddin Ahmad, the inaugural Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
