Sole DXB is an annual footwear, music, art, and lifestyle festival that takes place in the Dubai Design District in Dubai, UAE. The festival was inaugurated in 2011, and its most recent iteration took place from December 7 to 9, 2017. Brands like Nike, Adidas, Puma, Reebok, and others have exhibited at the festival. Speakers and performers have also included Hiroshi Fujiwara, Pusha T, Mobb Deep, Skepta, Hamdan Al Abri, and numerous others.

History

Sole DXB was founded in 2010 by Hussain Moloobhoy, Joshua Cox, Kris Balerite, and Rajat Malhotra. [1] The first Sole DXB event was marketed as a "sneaker summit" and took place on February 24, 2011 at thejamjar, a warehouse art gallery in Dubai's Al Quoz neighborhood. Nike, Adidas, Puma, Vans, and DC (among others) exhibited at the event. It also featured a screening of the short film, The Mystery of the Flying Kicks, and performances by a variety of local musicians and DJs. [2] [3] Around 1,000 people are estimated to have attended. The second Sole DXB event took place on April 27, 2012 at 8 different galleries and 2 warehouses on Al Serkal Avenue in Al Quoz. Performers included Hamdan Al Abri, Malikah, Shef Codes, and Beat Antenna. Sneaker designer, Nash Money, also created a custom shoe for the event. Around 4,000 people attended. [4] [5]

The third Sole DXB festival occurred on November 14 and 15, 2014 and was the first event of any kind to be held in the Dubai Design District. Brands like Reebok, Puma, House of Hackney, Alexander McQueen, Ray-Ban, and others were represented at the festival. An art gallery displayed works by a variety of artists, including Remi Rough, and the festival also hosted a basketball tournament. [1] [6]

The next edition of the festival was held on November 20 and 21, 2015. The headlining act that year was hip hop duo, Mobb Deep. Darryl McDaniels of Run-DMC also made an appearance. [7] [8] In 2016, the event was held on November 18 and 19 and featured performances from Skepta, Stormzy, Little Simz, BJ the Chicago Kid, and others. [9] [10] Brands that exhibited that year included New Balance, Diesel, Carhartt, K-Swiss, Timberland, and numerous others. [11] Hassan Hajjaj also relaunched the R.A.P. London streetwear brand at the festival. [9]

The most recent edition of the festival took place between December 7 and 9, 2017. [12] It featured speakers and performers such as Pusha T, Hiroshi Fujiwara, GoldLink, Kano, H.E.R., Knxwledge, and others. [13] The festival's focus was contemporary Japanese design. Brands that appeared at the festival for the first time included Visvim, Neighborhood, Wacko Maria, Undercover, and others. [14] [15] The Andy Warhol Museum displayed its final exhibition of "Letters to Andy Warhol." [16]

Chuck Taylor All-Stars or Converse All Stars is a model of casual shoe manufactured by Converse that was initially developed as a basketball shoe in the early 20th century. The design of the Chuck Taylor All Star has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in the 1920s. The shoe consists of a stitched upper portion, a toe cap that is usually made of white rubber, and a sole that is usually made of brown rubber. Although Chuck Taylors are made of various materials such as leather, the original and most widely known version of the shoe is made from cotton canvas. The innovative detail of the original shoe was the "loose lining" of soft canvas that was intended to provide flexibility and prevent blisters.

Hiroshi Fujiwara is a Japanese musician, producer, and designer.

Streetwear is a style of casual clothing which became global in the 1990s. It grew from New York hip hop fashion and eventually California surfskate culture, to encompass elements of sportswear, punk and Japanese street fashion. Eventually haute couture became an influence. It commonly centers on "casual, comfortable pieces such as jeans, T-shirts, baseball caps, and sneakers", and exclusivity through intentional product scarcity. Enthusiasts follow particular brands and try to obtain limited edition releases.

Complex Networks is an American media and entertainment company based in New York City for youth culture which was founded as a bi-monthly magazine Complex by fashion designer Marc (Ecko) Milecofsky. Complex Networks reports on popular and emerging trends in style, sneakers, food, music, sports and pop culture. Complex Networks reached over 90 million unique users per month in 2013, across its owned and operated and partner sites, socials and YouTube channels. The print magazine ceased publication with the December 2016/January 2017 issue. Complex currently has 4.55 million subscribers and 1.3 billion total views on YouTube. As of 2019, the company's yearly revenue was estimated to be circa $200m USD, 15% of which came from commerce.

Sneaker collecting is the acquisition and trading of sneakers as a hobby. It is often manifested by the use and collection of shoes made for particular sports, particularly basketball and skateboarding. A person involved in sneaker collecting is sometimes called a sneakerhead.

A Bathing Ape is a Japanese fashion brand founded by Nigo in Ura-Harajuku in 1993. The brand specializes in men's, women's and children's lifestyle and street wear, running 19 stores in Japan, including Bape Stores, Bape Pirate Stores, Bape Kids Stores, Bapexclusive Aoyama, and Bapexclusive Kyoto. The Kyoto store also includes Bape Gallery, a space used for various events and art shows sponsored by Bape. The collaboration has become notable for its high-end limited edition colorways and general releases offered by the Yeezy Boost sneakers line up. The collaboration has also produced shirts, jackets, track pants, socks, women's shoes and slippers. The first shoe model was released in February 2015.

Georgiy Aleksandrovich Rubchinskiy, known as Gosha Rubchinskiy, is a Russian fashion designer and photographer and the founder of his eponymous brand. Rubchinskiy takes inspiration from the fall of the Iron Curtain, Russian street and youth culture, and his experiences to create his collections, pushing Russian iconography, both past and present, onto the world stage through his runway shows and his imagery.

Highsnobiety is a Germany-based English streetwear blog, media brand and production agency launched in 2005 by David Fischer. It covers trends and news in fashion, art, music, and culture and is located in Berlin with additional offices in London and New York employing a total of around 100 employees. Its first print issue was Summer 2010. Highsnobiety receives around 500 million impressions per month including social media; its main website receives 8 million unique visits a month.

Aimé Leon Dore

Aimé Leon Dore is a fashion and lifestyle brand based in Queens, New York founded in March 2014. Led by founder Teddy Santis, Aimé Leon Dore has their flagship store located on Mulberry Street in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood.

Mohammed Abood Uraibi, best known as DJ MoCity or simply Mo, is an Iraqi-born DJ, MC and promoter, known for having co-founded Reggae Rajahs, the first Reggae Sound System in India. MoCity also founded The 264 Cru, a Dubai-based music, arts and culture collective, 264 Records, a record label based in Dubai, and most recently boxout.fm, South Asia’s first online community radio.

Reign is a New York-based fashion retailer and online store selling clothing, footwear, and accessories for men and women, established in 2017 and based in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan, in New York City. The store sells a mix of fashion products consisting of ready to wear, footwear, and accessories from numerous labels including Supreme, Off-White, Alexander Wang, Juun.J, Balmain, Rick Owens, A.P.C., Public School, and Tim Coppens.
