Solstice is a fantasy, mystery visual novel developed by the Polish indie studio MoaCube and released for Windows and MacOS on February 11, 2016. [1] Set in a city in a remote frozen region that is completely isolated from the world, it revolves around an investigation into the disappearance of an archaeologist. [2] The game received polarized reviews from critics, who praised its art and music, but had mixed opinions of its story.
The game revolves around the first-person accounts of Galen, a doctor, and Yani, an engineer, who are outsiders sent to investigate a city that is isolated from the world for three months due to harsh cold weather. [3] The city, constructed above hot springs, serves as an oasis, but after Lev, a neurotic archaeologist obsessed with the mysteries behind the city, disappears, betrayals and mechanical failures lead the main characters into a conspiracy that destabilizes the city. [3]
The game is a pure visual novel that progresses in a linear fashion and switches between protagonists at certain points in the story. It allows the player to make choices in response at various times, which may lead to one of four different endings, each with multiple variants. [4] The game does not focus on romance, but includes optional romances, including a same-gender coupling. [4]
The game was developed following the studio's previous release, Cinders . [5] Upon release, the game's developers noted that its sales had mostly shifted to Steam and away from direct sales, resulting in them stating their disappointment about how they are now dependent on Steam. [5]
Neal Chandran of RPGFan rated the game an 88/100, calling it "another compelling visual novel from MoaCube". Stating that the game has a "twisted storyline, sumptuous graphics and evocative music", he nonetheless criticized "a few instances where the narrative is a little choppy". However, he praised the four separate endings of the game, saying they resulted in "immense replay value". [4]
Ethan Gach of Kill Screen rated the game 66/100. Praising the game for its use of two main characters with unique personalities due to its separate writers, he nevertheless stated that the game's "penchant for playful melodrama and comedic banter" undercut the tension of the story. [3]
Cassandra Khaw of USGamer said that the narrative "feels anything but rote", calling its underlying themes "far darker than what its fairy tale exterior would suggest". [6] She also called the protagonists "some of the most unconventional heroes I've seen in a while". [6] James Monkman of Indie Games Plus called the art "some of the most beautiful I've seen in a visual novel". [7]
Unlimited Saga is a 2002 role-playing video game developed and published by Square for the PlayStation 2 as the ninth game in the SaGa series. It was released in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in North America and Europe; its European version was published by Atari Europe. The story follows seven characters as they explore mysteries connected to the Seven Wonders, artifacts left by an ancient civilization said to be capable of triggering a golden age. Battles carry over the skill-based levelling systems and nonlinear structure of earlier SaGa titles, with an exploration structure similar to a board game.
Baten Kaitos Origins, released in Japan as Baten Kaitos II, is a 2006 role-playing video game developed by Monolith Soft and Tri-Crescendo for the GameCube. It is a prequel to Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (2003). Similar to the first entry, the player assume the role of a "guardian spirit" – an unseen player avatar – who guides protagonist Sagi and his party of companions in an adventure across an aerial floating island-based kingdom in the clouds. The game retains the original's focus around the concept of "Magnus" – magical cards that capture the "essence" of items found in the in-game world, where the concept is still used as a plot device, for in-game item management, and as a basis for the card-themed battle system, albeit with minor tweaks.
12Riven: The Psi-Climinal of Integral is a visual novel video game developed by KID, CyberFront, and SDR Project, and released on March 13, 2008, for the PlayStation 2 and April 16, 2009, for the PlayStation Portable. There is a regular edition, and a special edition which included the game's original soundtrack. KID are known for producing the Memories Off series, and the Infinity series which includes Never 7: The End of Infinity, Ever 17: The Out of Infinity, and Remember 11: The Age of Infinity. When KID declared bankruptcy in November 2006, production on the game was halted until CyberFront took over and resumed production.
Fatal Hearts is an English-language visual novel/adventure game in which players control a teenage female protagonist who is having strange dreams while people are being murdered. It was released in October 2007 for Microsoft Windows.
Lux-Pain is a visual novel adventure video game developed by Killaware and published by Marvelous Entertainment for the Nintendo DS video game console. The game was released in Japan on March 27, 2008. It was published in North America by Ignition Entertainment on March 24, 2009, and in Europe by Rising Star Games on March 27, 2009.
Memories Off is a Japanese visual novel developed by KID originally released in Japan on September 30, 1999 for the PlayStation, and was later released for the PC, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, and the PlayStation Portable. Subsequent versions incorporated new content not found in the original version, such as a second part of the story, Memories Off: Pure, originally released as a separate game for the Neo Geo Pocket Color on April 27, 2000. The gameplay in Memories Off follows a linear plot line, which offers pre-determined scenarios and courses of interaction, and focuses on the appeal of the six female main characters.
The Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles video game series consists of Crystal Chronicles, a spin-off of the main Final Fantasy series, its sequels My Life as a King and My Life as a Darklord, and their spin-offs, Ring of Fates, Echoes of Time and The Crystal Bearers. Crystal Chronicles, Ring of Fates, and Echoes of Time have had released soundtrack albums to date, and Crystal Chronicles and Ring of Fates each have an associated single. Kumi Tanioka is the main composer for the series, having composed the three released soundtracks as well as the music for My Life as a King and My Life as a Darklord. Hidenori Iwasaki is filling that role for The Crystal Bearers. Nobuo Uematsu, the main composer for the regular Final Fantasy series, contributed one track to the Ring of Fates soundtrack. Yae and Donna Burke sang the Japanese and English versions of the theme song for Crystal Chronicles, respectively, while Aiko sang the theme song for Ring of Fates.
Again: Interactive Crime Novel, known in Japan as Again: FBI Chōshinri Sōsakan, is a mystery adventure video game developed by Cing and published by Tecmo for the Nintendo DS. It was released in Japan on December 10, 2009 and in North America on March 30, 2010.
Mitsuru Kirijo is a fictional character in the Persona series, appearing as a main character in Persona 3. She is the unofficial leader of an organization called SEES, which the main characters of the game participate in to fight creatures called Shadows.
Malicious is an action video game developed by Alvion for the PlayStation 3. Malicious was released on October 27, 2010 in Japan and worldwide in 2012 by Sony Computer Entertainment. Because of the game's critical success, an enhanced port of the game was announced for the PlayStation Vita titled Malicious Rebirth, featuring a new “Rebirth” chapter with new levels, new bosses and new moves. Another enhanced port, titled Malicious Fallen, was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2017.
Millennium is a Japanese-style role-playing video game series by Aldorlea Games. It is set in a fantasy medieval world where players take control of a young peasant girl named Marine. Several other characters join her later in the game and in the sequels. There are five games in the series. All the games in the series were made with RPG Maker XP and are designed so they can either be played as stand-alone or importing savefiles from one game to another.

Cinders is a visual novel video game based on the Cinderella story that was developed and published by Polish indie studio MoaCube for Windows and Mac OS X in 2012, Nintendo Switch in 2019, and PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2020. The game was developed and published by MoaCube.
Christine Love is a Canadian independent visual novel writer best known for her original works Digital: A Love Story; don't take it personally, babe, it just ain't your story; Analogue: A Hate Story; and Ladykiller in a Bind. Love began creating visual novels while in university, making a few small games, visual novels, and pieces of written fiction before coming into prominence with the release of Digital in 2010. She went on to work on Love and Order, a dating simulation by Italian video game designer Celso Riva, as well as don't take it personally, both released in 2011. Her first commercial project on which she was the primary developer is Analogue, released in February 2012; Love dropped out of her English degree during its development, and is currently a full-time game developer. She released an expansion to the game, titled Hate Plus, in 2013. In October 2016, she released Ladykiller in a Bind. Her latest project is Get in the Car, Loser!, a road trip role-playing game that was released on 21 September 2021.
Juniper's Knot is a short kinetic visual novel developed by Canadian studio Dischan Media. Created in under a month, Juniper's Knot revolves around a lost boy and an imprisoned demoness, as they help overcome each other's obstacles through wit and memory, respectively.
Lost Echo is a point-and-click adventure developed and published by KickBack Studios for iOS, Android and Windows Phone. It was released on September 27, 2013, for iOS. Later it was also released for Windows Phone and Android on June 18, 2014, and November 11, 2015, respectively. The game has gained a cult following. On February 9, 2019, and February 19, 2019, the developers updated the game with a complete remaster of the game for iOS and Android respectively. As of 2024, KickBack Studios is developing a sequel, entitled Lost Echo: Resonance.
The music for the 2013 action role-playing game Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, developed and published by Square Enix, was composed by Masashi Hamauzu, Naoshi Mizuta, and Mitsuto Suzuki. Hamauzu was the leader composer for XIII and XIII-2, and Mizuta and Suzuki previously composed music for XIII-2. Musicians who had previously worked with the composers on XIII-2 and The 3rd Birthday worked on the project in Japan, while the main soundtrack was performed and recorded in Boston by the Video Game Orchestra, conducted by Shota Nakama. Along with including more percussion and ethnic elements, the soundtrack used "Blinded by Light", the main theme for main character Lightning, as a leitmotif. Unlike the previous XIII games, the soundtrack did not include a theme song, as the composers felt it would detract from the emotional impact of the ending.

SC2VN is a free indie visual novel developed by Team Eleven Eleven and released for Windows on September 22, 2015. Set in South Korea during the early days of the competitive StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty scene, it follows Mach, an aspiring professional gamer. The game has been praised for its realistic depiction of esports, including its emotional toll and the possibility of failure. It was followed by a prequel, Don't Forget Our Esports Dream.
Chicken Police: Paint it Red! is a point-and-click adventure game developed by The Wild Gentlemen. HandyGames released it in 2020 for multiple platforms. Players control a burnt-out cop who is investigating a crime in a city of anthropomorphic animals.
