The Solutions Journalism Network(SJN) is an independent, non-profit organization that advocates an approach of solutions journalism, an evidence-based mode of reporting on the responses to social problems. It was founded in 2013 by David Bornstein, Courtney E. Martin, and Tina Rosenberg. Its staff in New York City and Oakland, California, help journalists and news organizations across the country understand, value, and build the capacity to do solutions-oriented reporting.

The mission of SJN is "to spread the practice of solutions journalism: rigorous and compelling reporting about responses to social problems". [1] What SJN calls solutions journalism is preceded by very similar journalistic styles that have been practiced outside the United States, including "constructive journalism", which originated in Denmark.

As of November 2017, the organization says it had created working relationships with 180 newsrooms in the United States, exposing thousands of journalists to the practice of solutions journalism. [2]

History

The Solutions Journalism Network grew out of the "Fixes" column in The New York Times Opinionator section written by journalists David Bornstein and Tina Rosenberg since October 2010. [3] Together with Courtney Martin, an author, speaker, blogger and frequent contributor to "Fixes", they established SJN in February 2013.

SJN's first major project was a collaboration with The Seattle Times to produce a year-long series of solutions-oriented stories about public education called Education Lab. This initiative was extended for a second year. [4] In its first year, SJN also launched a series of funds to provide financial support to journalists pursuing solutions stories on topics concerning climate change resilience, social and emotional learning, and women's economic equity.

Philosophy

SJN believes that most news reporting fails to fulfill journalism's mission to hold an accurate mirror up to society. While traditional journalism holds that a reporter's primary role is to expose problems, SJN argues that the press should also examine examples of responses to those problems, with the same degree of rigor. These responses, it holds, are an important part of what is happening in the world, and accurate coverage of society must include them to be able to provide the whole story.

SJN attempts to distinguish solutions journalism from "happy news", fluff or advocacy. By covering how people are attempting to solve problems, and writing objectively about the associated evidence of failure or success, solutions journalism seeks to provide information of value to society. SJN argues that such reporting strengthens the watchdog function of journalism: if some people have found newsworthy responses to a problem, it removes the excuses of those who are behaving badly.

SJN also argues that a steady diet of problem-focused reporting makes citizens passive, apathetic and disengaged. Research shows that news that is only about what's wrong with the world causes readers to disengage. [5]

For example, one study shows that negative messages about the impending environmental disaster of climate change make people less likely to take action, not more likely. [6]

SJN posits that readers are more likely to engage when they can learn about newsworthy attempts to solve problems. These stories elicit positive emotions that are different than the heartwarming emotions produced by "happy news" stories. Instead, they make readers feel a sense of empowerment — a productive emotion for civic engagement. [7]

Research by the University of Texas' Engaging News Project compared the responses of study participants who read traditional problem-focused stories or the same stories with a solutions component added. Readers of the solutions stories were, by large margins, more likely to feel inspired and optimistic, get involved in working towards a solution, share the article and want to read more articles in the same publication. The Seattle Times has found similar results when surveying readers about its Ed Lab stories. [10]

Strategy

To achieve its mission, SJN works with journalists and news organizations to build awareness and the practice of solutions reporting.

SJN offers newsrooms workshops and webinars intended to introduce solutions journalism as a practice. Participants learn: specific techniques for writing solutions stories without falling into fluff, advocacy, happy news or public relations; systems for finding legitimate stories; storytelling; how to integrate solutions writing into forms of journalism they are already practicing, such as beat, enterprise, and investigative reporting.[ citation needed ]

Newsroom engines

SJN works with news organizations to build solutions-oriented coverage of health and violence. Examples of newsrooms in these projects are the Detroit Free Press ; KPCC, a public radio station in Los Angeles; and The World , a radio program distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

The Health Engine project helps journalists find "positive deviants" in health databases, as opposed to focusing on negative outliers. SJN provides participating newsrooms with workshops, data and research help and funding at various levels, most of it modest amounts for travel.

The health project was a winner of the Knight News Challenge, and has also received funding from the California HealthCare Foundation. [11] [12] The Violence Engine is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Education coverage

In October 2013, the Seattle Times launched a series of education-related articles, documentaries, and guest opinion pieces written from a solutions standpoint. [13] The Times, with SJN's support, assigned two journalists to the project full-time. They write a major feature article each month addressing perennial issues with education, like dropout rates, attendance, parent involvement. They also produce an Education Lab blog, which now attracts over 60,000 views each month.

Responses from a survey taken of Seattle Times readers indicated that people are aware of the campaign and feel that the solutions stories being run are different from traditional journalism. Other results indicated that people are more likely to share, act on, or change their think about an issue due to the solutions stories they read. Some respondents stated that they felt that the solutions journalism was biased, while others said they were happy with the positive approach to issue. [14]

In March 2015, The Boston Globe and SJN began a collaboration to produce two major solutions-focused series on issues affecting education in Boston and the state of Massachusetts.

Toolkit

In January 2015, the SJN released a downloadable "Solutions Journalism Toolkit" intended to help educate journalists interested in emphasizing solutions in their work. [15] The 48-page toolkit walks readers through the ins and outs of solutions journalism, including what solutions journalism is and what it is not, and how to write solutions stories. [16]

Curriculum

SJN, in partnership with Temple University's School of Media and Communication, is[ when? ] developing courses for journalism students. It has also collaborated with the Poynter Institute to produce a free solutions journalism webinar on Poynter's NewU site. [17] SJN and Poynter are now developing a free interactive online course in solutions journalism.

Criticism

The Solutions Journalism Network and The Seattle Times drew early criticism for a potential conflict of interest. The major funder of the Education Lab collaboration is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has a very defined and controversial position on education issues. The Seattle Times and SJN attempted to head off criticism by being open from the start about the project's funding. [18]

The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) is a nonprofit news organization based in Emeryville, California. It was founded in 1977 as the nation’s first nonprofit investigative journalism organization, and has since grown into a multi-platform newsroom, with investigations published on the Reveal website, public radio show and podcast, video pieces and documentaries and social media platforms, reaching over a million people weekly. The public radio show and podcast, “Reveal,” co-produced with PRX, is CIR’s flagship distribution platform, airing on 588 stations nationwide. The newsroom focuses on reporting that reveals inequities, abuse, and corruption, and holds those responsible accountable.

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is an American news media organization established in 2006 that sponsors independent reporting on global issues that other media outlets are less willing or able to undertake on their own. The center's goal is to raise the standard of coverage of international systemic crises, and to do so in a way that engages both the broad public and government policy-makers. The organization is based in Washington, D.C.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sewell Chan</span> American journalist

Sewell Chan is an American journalist who is the editor-in-chief of The Texas Tribune. Prior to that he was the editorial page editor at the Los Angeles Times, where he oversaw the editorial board and the Op-Ed and Sunday Opinion pages of the newspaper. Chan worked at The New York Times from 2004 to 2018 in a variety of reporter and editorial positions.

California Watch, part of the nonprofit Center for Investigative Reporting, began producing stories in 2009. The official launch of the California Watch website took place in January 2010. The team was best known for producing well researched and widely distributed investigative stories on topics of interest to Californians. In small ways, the newsroom pioneered in the digital space, including listing the names of editors and copy editors at the bottom of each story, custom-editing stories for multiple partners, developing unique methods to engage with audiences and distributing the same essential investigative stories to newsrooms across the state. It worked with many news outlets, including newspapers throughout the state, all of the ABC television affiliates in California, KQED radio and television and dozens of websites. The Center for Investigative Reporting created California Watch with $3.5 million in seed funding. The team won several industry awards for its public interest reporting, including the George Polk Award in 2012. In addition to numerous awards won for its investigative reports, the California Watch website also won an Online Journalism Award in the general excellence category from the Online News Association in its first year of existence.

The Conversation is a network of not-for-profit media outlets publishing news stories and research reports online, with accompanying expert opinion and analysis. Articles are written by academics and researchers under a free Creative Commons license, allowing reuse without modification. Its model has been described as explanatory journalism. Except in "exceptional circumstances", it only publishes articles by "academics employed by, or otherwise formally connected to, accredited institutions, including universities and accredited research bodies".

DocumentCloud is an open-source software as a service platform that allows users to upload, analyze, annotate, collaborate on and publish primary source documents. Since its launch in 2009, it has been used primarily by journalists to find information in the documents they gather in the course of their reporting and, in the interests of transparency, publish the documents. As of August 2015, DocumentCloud users had uploaded more than 2 million documents containing 27 million pages. Many of them are accessible via a public search portal.

The Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) is a non-profit consortium of journalism organizations. The organization promotes nonprofit investigative and public service journalism through its association of member entities.

Solutions journalism is an approach to news reporting that focuses on the responses to social issues as well as the problems themselves. Solutions stories, anchored in credible evidence, explain how and why responses are working, or not working. The goal of this journalistic approach is to present people with a truer, more complete view of these issues, helping to drive more effective citizenship.

Kimi Yoshino is an American journalist and the editor-in-chief of the Baltimore Banner, a nonprofit publication funded by Baltimore-area hotel magnate Stewart Bainum Jr.

First Draft News is a project "to fight mis- and disinformation online" founded in 2015 by nine organizations brought together by the Google News Lab. It includes Facebook, Twitter, the Open Society Foundations and several philanthropic organizations.

Climate Feedback (CF) is a web-based content annotation tool that allows qualified scientists to comment on stories online, adding context and noting inaccuracies. It is one of three websites under the Science Feedback parent organization that fact-checks media coverage. Science Feedback is a non-profit organization registered in France.

Chalkbeat is a non-profit news organization that covers education in several American communities. Its mission is to "inform the decisions and actions that lead to better outcomes for children and families by providing deep, local coverage of education policy and practice." It aims to cover "the effort to improve schools for all children, especially those who have historically lacked access to a quality education". Its areas of focus include under-reported stories, education policy, equity, trends, and local reporting.

City Bureau is an American non-profit organization based in South Side of Chicago, Illinois. It is a non-profit newsroom that aims to produce civic journalism that brings journalists and communities together in a collaborative spirit. It was founded in 2015, and soon after won the March 2016 Sidney Award. City Bureau has since won awards from the Online Journalism Awards for their Documenters.org project, a $1M grant from the MacArthur Foundation, and trained over 80 journalists, held numerous public meetings, and co-published articles with numerous outlets.

Brian Timpone is an American conservative businessman and former journalist who operates a network of nearly 1,300 conservative local news websites. In 2012, Timpone stated that articles on his websites are partially written by freelancers outside of the United States, although he described the writing as "domestic" in a separate interview. According to The New York Times, Timpone's "operation is rooted in deception, eschewing hallmarks of news reporting like fairness and transparency." His sites publish articles for pay from outside groups, and do not disclose it.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Report for America</span> American national service program for emerging journalists

Report for America (RFA) is a national service program that places emerging journalists in local newsrooms to report on under-covered topics and communities across the United States. It was launched in 2017 as an initiative of The GroundTruth Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit journalism organization that trains and supports emerging journalists across the world. RFA was co-founded by Steven Waldman, who currently serves as its president, and Charles Sennott, the chief executive officer and editor-in-chief of The GroundTruth Project. The program is rooted in a 2015 report written by Waldman, "Report for America: a community service-based model for saving local journalism."

Jiquanda Johnson is an American journalist who founded Flint Beat in Flint, Michigan in 2017 and reported on, among other things, the Flint water crisis. The site has become important for national news organizations and community members, which use her reporting and Flint Beat to chronicle the long-term effects and historical conditions in Flint related to the crisis.
