Sonia Wachstein (born Sophie) is an Austrian-American psychotherapist, social worker, and writer. She was born October 25, 1907, in Vienna, Austria, [1] and died in New York City, New York, August 10, 2001. [2]
Sonia was the daughter of Bernhard Wachstein, a well-known historian, bibliographer, and genealogist, [3] : 92 and Marie (née Weiss) Wachstein, as well as the sister of Max Wachstein. [4] [5] Bernhard Wachstein was the director of the Library of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien, the Jewish community of Vienna. [6] She grew up in the western part of Leopoldstadt where there were few Jews. [7] However, her family was consciously Jewish and attended salons with Jews which included aspiring and well established personalities in science, arts, music and literature. As a child Wachstein recalls sitting at the children's table with Hilde Spiel who noted she did not like women who talked to much (she was pointing at Wachstein's mother). [3] : 92 In her early years, Sonia was homeschooled by her mother. [8] [9]
She joined the Socialist Workers' Youth and later the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP). [10] : 28 She later withdrew from actively working in the SDAP due to its antisemitic sentiments, although it was the only major Austrian party that was not programmatically antisemitic. [10] : 29 However, like her Jewish contemporaries, she was caught off guard by the Anschluss in March 1938. She had visited a friend in Palestine in the summer of 1937 and declined his marriage proposal because she did not want to leave Austria. [10] : 34–35 In 1938 she wrote a letter to Charles Vane-Tempest-Stewart Londonderry asking for his help in securing the release of her brother Max Wachstein, a physician, who was in the Dachau concentration camp. [11] He was permitted to leave in 1939 and went to work at Guy's Hospital in London before moving to New York City in 1940 where he eventually became director of laboratories at Beth Israel Hospital. [5]
Wachstein attended Hietzing Gymnasium. [12] : 274 She later studied English and German at the University of Vienna receiving her Ph.D. in 1932. [8] [13] After completing her PhD, she taught for five years at Zwi-Perez-Chajes Gymnasium in Vienna, [1] [13] where she had also attended. [8] In 1939, she immigrated to London, England, where she worked for the Jewish Refugee Committee and taught both English and German to refugees and other immigrants through 1943. [4] [14]
In 1944, Wachstein immigrated to New York City, where she made a living teaching German at Brooklyn College. [14] [15] She was a visiting instructor at Vassar College May–June 1944. [13] [14] She then entered a work-study program where she went on to earn her Masters of Arts in social work at the Graduate School of Social Work at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, finishing in 1946. [1] [16] Her dissertation title was Changing Attitudes in Relatives' Responsibilities (Observations made in the Welfare Office of a Japanese Relocation Center). [17] She then became a supervisor in the Brooklyn school system. Wachstein became a U.S. citizen March 29, 1949. [18] From 1952 until her retirement in 1977, she worked as a social worker and department head in the New York City Bureau of Child Guidance. [9] In 1965 she was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at Catholic University of Peru. [19] [20]
Following retirement, she worked as a psychotherapist for adults with behavioral problems and taught English to Russian students at Bryn Mawr College. [9] [15] In 1992, Wachstein returned to Vienna and visited the Zwi-Perez-Chajes Gymnasium which had re-opened in 1984 and was graduating its first class since 1938. [21] It was an "emotional highlight" for the students to hear Wachstein share her reflections from her time teaching at the school. [22]
Wachstein published several articles regarding the development, analysis, and treatment of childhood mental disorders. [8] Two of her works, published in the journal Child Welfare, are Child Guidance Without Involving Parents? [23] and News from the Field, Bedford Stuyvesant's PS83. A School for Healing. [24] She also published an article entitled, An Austrian Solution to the Problem of Child Placement. [25] These works were focused on offering tangible solutions to growing mental health concerns among adolescents in school after World War II. [8] In 2001 she published Too Deep Were Our Roots: A Viennese Jewish memoir of the years between the two world wars (foreward by James Monaco), a personal account of her memories living in Vienna between World War I and World War II. [26]
Sonia Wachstein was known for her research in social work and psychotherapy. [8] She published research about equity problems in youth mental health based on her direct observation in the New York City Public School system. [27] As early as the 1960s, Sonia Wachstein observed the evident socioeconomic divide regarding access to privatized healthcare, especially therapy and other mental health services. [27] In spite of this, she advocated for direct psychiatric and psychological screening in public schools, clear pathways from a social worker to a therapist, and confidentiality for youth in therapy sessions without parents present. [27]
Leopoldstadt is the 2nd municipal district of Vienna in Austria. As of 1 January 2016, there are 103,233 inhabitants over 19.27 km2 (7 sq mi). It is situated in the heart of the city and, together with Brigittenau, forms a large island surrounded by the Danube Canal and, to the north, the Danube. It is named after Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor. Due to its relatively high percentage of Jewish inhabitants before the Holocaust, Leopoldstadt gained the nickname Mazzesinsel. This context was a significant aspect for the district twinning with the New York City borough Brooklyn in 2007.
The history of the Jews in Austria probably begins with the exodus of Jews from Judea under Roman occupation. There have been Jews in Austria since the 3rd century CE. Over the course of many centuries, the political status of the community rose and fell many times: during certain periods, the Jewish community prospered and enjoyed political equality, and during other periods it suffered pogroms, deportations to concentration camps and mass murder, and antisemitism. The Holocaust drastically reduced the Jewish community in Austria and only 8,140 Jews remained in Austria according to the 2001 census. Today, Austria has a Jewish population of 10,300 which extends to 33,000 if Law of Return is accounted for, meaning having at least one Jewish grandparent.

The Jüdisches Museum Wien, trading as Jüdisches Museum der Stadt Wien GmbH or the Jewish Museum Vienna, is a museum of Jewish history, life and religion in Austria. The museum is present on two locations, in the Palais Eskeles in the Dorotheergasse and in the Judenplatz, and has distinguished itself by a very active programme of exhibitions and outreach events highlighting the past and present of Jewish culture in Austria. Anitta Müller-Cohen born Rosenzweig (1890–1962) was an Austrian-born Jewish woman who emigrated to Tel Aviv, Mandatory Palestine, in 1935. In Austria, she was a prominent social worker, politician and writer who became increasingly interested in Zionism. One of the leading members of Vienna's Jewish National Party, she organized and actively contributed to the First World Congress of Jewish Women which was held in Vienna in May 1923. At the American Jewish Congress in Chicago in 1925, she addressed the opening session. After emigrating to Palestine in 1935, she became a member of the Mizrahi Women's Organization, founded the Women's Social Service, and continued her welfare work which was mainly concerned with children and immigrants.
Sidonie Werner was a German Jewish schoolteacher and feminist based in Hamburg. She was active in the German League of Jewish Women which she founded in 1904, together with Bertha Pappenheim. In 1929, she organized the World Conference of Jewish Women in Hamburg.

Marianne Schmidl was the first woman to graduate with a doctorate in ethnology from the University of Vienna. An Austrian ethnologist, teacher, librarian and art collector, Schmidl was plundered and murdered in the Holocaust by the Nazis because of her Jewish origins.
Maria Dorothea Simon was an Austrian psychologist and scholar of social work. Born into a Jewish family in Vienna near the end of the First World War, she was educated in Austria and Czechoslovakia but emigrated to London after the latter was annexed by Germany in 1938. While in the United Kingdom, she worked at the Hampstead Nurseries, an experimental child care centre run by the psychoanalyst Anna Freud. She was married to the jurist and resistance activist Joseph Simon.

Yella Hertzka was an Austrian women's rights and peace activist, school director, and music business executive. She began working in women's humanitarian and social improvement projects in 1900. Co-founding the Neuer Wiener Frauenklub in 1903, she served as its president from 1909 to 1933. From 1904 she participated in the international women's rights movements, supporting women's suffrage and pacifism. In 1919, she attended the Zürich congress of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). She was a co-founder of the Austrian section of the WILPF, organized its 1921 Vienna Congress, and attended every international WILPF congress held between 1919 and 1948. She worked to free prisoners of war after World War I and during World War II helped those wanting to emigrate or oppose the draft.
