Soul Sounds is a choir based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The choir first came into prominence as the Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya school Senior choir, when directed by Soundarie David, it won a Sri Lanka Carol Competition in 1996. After they participated in the Llangollen Eistedfodd competition in Wales 2004, [2] and subsequently leaving the school, [3] the choir decided to continue singing with a new and independent identity, Soul Sounds. Competitions

Soul Sounds participated in the fourth World Choir Games in Xiamen, China winning two silver medals. [6] In 2008, in competition for the second time, they won three gold medals at the fifth Games in Graz, Austria. [7]

Recordings

The choir was invited to provide a choral contribution to a CD done in the UK by the UK Disasters Emergency Committee after the Asian tsunami of December 26, 2004. [8] Three other compact discs have been released, entitled Soul of the Season (2005), Soul Sounds in Australia (2007) and Soul Sounds in USA (2010). [9]

International tours

Public concerts outside Sri Lanka include 3 concerts in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne suburbs respectively in February 2007, [10] Kuwait City in April 2007, at churches around Normandy, France in April 2009, [11] [12] [13] [14] at the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, China in June 2009, [15] in New York City and Los Angeles in August/September 2010 [16] and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in October 2010. [17] The choir returned to Australia for performances in Sydney and Melbourne in September 2011. [18] [19]

Sri Lankan Australians are people of Sri Lankan heritage living in Australia; this includes Sri Lankans by birth and by ancestry. Sri Lankan Australians constitute one of the largest groups of Overseas Sri Lankan communities and are the largest diasporic Sri Lankan community in Oceania. Sri Lankan Australians consist of people with Sinhalese, Tamil, Moor, Burgher, Malay and Chinese origins among others.

The University of Louisville Cardinal Singers is a choir consisting of between 29-40 members, and is the most selective choral ensemble at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.

Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus (MGLC) was founded in Australia in 1990 by a gay performer and activist, Lawrence Emanuel (1966). The chorus was first named 'AL sounds', due to its part affiliation with the Foundation. In April 1994, the name was changed to Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus, reflecting the chorus's organizational independence and a desire to further challenge stereotypes.

The World Choir Games is the largest global choral festival and competition. Organised by the Interkultur Foundation forchoirs from all over the world, regardless of their country of origin, race, genre of music or artistic ambitions, its motto is "Singing together brings nations together".

The Australian Voices are a national choir of young adult Australian singers directed by John Rotar and produced by Scott Griffin. The choir is prominent promoters and performers of Australian choral music, commissioning a number of works in their distinctive A cappella style. The choir has performed concerts throughout Australia, Europe, the United States, Central America, Canada and Asia. They have also performed for Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio live concerts, appeared at major concerts for festivals and events, and produced thirteen CDs and two kits on creative choral singing.

Between 2008 and 2009, major protests against the Sri Lankan Civil War took place in several countries around the world, urging national and world leaders and organisations to take action on bringing a unanimous cease fire to the Sri Lankan Civil War, which had taken place for twenty-six years. Tamil diaspora populations around the world expressed concerns regarding the conduct of the civil war in the island nation of Sri Lanka. The civil war, which took place between the Sri Lankan Army and the separatist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam is believed to have killed over 100,000 civilians. Protesters and critics of the Sri Lankan government that triggered a culturally based civil war to be a systematic genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Sri Lankan Tamil minority in Sri Lanka.

Supafest was an annual music festival held in Australia during April, created by Paper Chase Touring and Entertainment PTY LTD. It started in 2010, spreading out to in five major capital cities, though in 2011 the festival was reduced to four shows with the Adelaide leg withdrawn as well as the second show in Sydney. Dubbed as Australia's largest urban music festival, the festival promises to deliver some of the most exciting and leading performers in the urban music world.

The Blue Choir of Sam Ratulangi University is a students choir of Indonesia that consists of around 50 singers selected from full-time engineering students at Sam Ratulangi University. Between auditions, each new choir meets around six times to learn new repertoire, tour both urban and rural parts of North Sulawesi, provide choral workshops for schools and to tour internationally. The choir has received international attention and critical acclaim from overseas audiences but limited publicity in Indonesia itself. Their repertoire, although widely varied in style, age and language, specifically emphasises works by Indonesian composers and music from Asia Pacific and other cultures. Performances by the choir regularly include commissioned works showcasing these uniquely North Sulawesi and Indonesian traditions.

Tigran Hekekyan is an Armenian conductor and music professor. He is the founder, artistic director, and principal conductor of the Little Singers of Armenia choir, as well as the founder and president of the Armenian Little Singers International Association. Hekekyan is a professor of conducting at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory. He also serves as the director of the Sayat-Nova Music School.

Cantus is a Norwegian women's choir founded in 1986. It consists of around 30 amateur singers, and is based in Trondheim. Their director is Tove Ramlo-Ystad.

Soundarie David Rodrigo is a pianist, accompanist, music director and music educationalist from Sri Lanka. She is in the panel of judges of the Sri Lanka's Got Talent originated from the Got Talent franchise and the world Choir Games She is also the founder and music director of Sri Lanka’s premier female ensemble ‘Soul Sounds’– that has performed and won at many international competitions. By being a judge at the 9th World Choir Games, she also became the first Sri Lankan to be a judge at any international musical competition.

Emeka Nwokedi is a Nigerian conductor and music director. Since 1995, he has been the conductor and music director of Muson Centre. In February 1988, he co-founded Lagos City Chorale.
