Sounddogs.com, Inc. is a commercial online library of sound effects based in Marina Del Rey, California, with offices in Canada, Argentina, and Uruguay. It is the first and largest online sound effects and production music library on the Internet launched in May 1997. [4] As of 2016, 708,636 sound effects and production music tracks are available for immediate download or on hard drive or CD. [5] Downloads are available in AIFF, WAV, and MP3 formats. Sounddogs started as a sound design and editorial company in 1990 and has contributed to more than 150 feature films and earned multiple awards and nominations from the BAFTA Award, Primetime Emmy Award and Golden Reel Awards. As of 2022, there are over 1 million sound files of sound effects and production music. [6]

Company history

In 1990, Gregory King and Nelson Ferrera formed the original Sound Dogs Inc. as a sound editorial company in Toronto, Canada. [7] In 1991, Robert Nokes was appointed as an assistant of King. In 1995 Greg King moved to Los Angeles along with Rob Nokes. Paul Huntsman of Todd-AO introduced them to Robert Grieve, who six years earlier had declined to become a founding partner of Soundelux. Together they formed "Sound Dogs USA" in Los Angeles, California. [7] After a year, they launched Sounddogs.com on May 1, 1997, a large online sound effects archive as a marketing tool with Picture Editors. [3] In 1998 they received invitation for a meeting with Kleiner Perkins, a Silicon Valley Venture Capital firm. They later worked with giant companies like Apple, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Avid Technology, and Digital River. Around 1999, Nelson Ferreira partnered with Stephen Barden at Sound Dogs Toronto. In late 2001, Sound Dogs Inc. (King, Grieve) and Sounddogs.com (Nokes) split amicably and remain close working partners. Sound Dogs New York was started by Stephen Barden around 2005. In the late 2000s King formed a sound design firm called The Dawgs Sound Design, which later became King SoundWorks. Currently, there are three separately owned Sounddogs companies: Sounddogs.com, owned by Rob Nokes; King SoundWorks (formally known as SoundDogs USA), owned by Greg King and SoundDogs Canada, owned by Nelson Ferreira. On June 1, 2019, Sound Ideas purchased SoundDogs.com together with the entirety of the sound effects library owned by Rob Nokes, Soundelux, SounDogs Library, and SoundStorm. [8]

Since 2001, the company signed co-distribution deal and partnerships with many sound designer and companies with a view to providing the best selection possible. In November 2004, Rob Nokes acquired the sound library and trademark of SoundStorm, a sound editorial company nominated for eight Academy Awards. SoundStorm's corporate predecessor was a company called Walla Works, which had employed the founding partners of Soundelux, another sound editorial company. On November 17, 2014, the Todd-Soundelux Trademarks (Todd AO and Soundelux) and Copyrights (Sound Effects Library) were also acquired in Federal Bankruptcy Court by Rob Nokes of Sounddogs.com, Inc. [10] Nokes purchased all of Todd-Soundelux's library assets and trademarks, which included The Hollywood Edge. [11] On January 1, 2015, Nokes sold the Hollywood Edge Sound Effects to the Sound Ideas. A film crew is a group of people, hired by a production company, for the purpose of producing a film or motion picture. The crew is distinguished from the cast, as the cast are understood to be the actors who appear in front of the camera or provide voices for characters in the film. The crew is also separate from the producers, as the producers are the ones who own a portion of either the film studio or the film's intellectual property rights. A film crew is divided into different departments, each of which specializes in a specific aspect of the production. Film crew positions have evolved over the years, spurred by technological change, but many traditional jobs date from the early 20th century and are common across jurisdictions and filmmaking cultures.

A sound editor is a creative professional responsible for selecting and assembling sound recordings in preparation for the final sound mixing or mastering of a television program, motion picture, video game, or any production involving recorded or synthetic sound. The sound editor works with the supervising sound editor. The supervising sound editor often assigns scenes and reels the sound editor based on the editor's strengths and area of expertise. Sound editing developed out of the need to fix the incomplete, undramatic, or technically inferior sound recordings of early talkies, and over the decades has become a respected filmmaking craft, with sound editors implementing the aesthetic goals of motion picture sound design.

Sound design is the art and practice of creating soundtracks for a variety of needs. It involves specifying, acquiring or creating auditory elements using audio production techniques and tools. It is employed in a variety of disciplines including filmmaking, television production, video game development, theatre, sound recording and reproduction, live performance, sound art, post-production, radio, new media and musical instrument development. Sound design commonly involves performing and editing of previously composed or recorded audio, such as sound effects and dialogue for the purposes of the medium, but it can also involve creating sounds from scratch through synthesizers. A sound designer is one who practices sound design.

Filmmaking or film production is the process by which a motion picture is produced. Filmmaking involves a number of complex and discrete stages, beginning with an initial story, idea, or commission. Production then continues through screenwriting, casting, pre-production, shooting, sound recording, post-production, and screening the finished product before an audience, which may result in a film release and exhibition. The process is nonlinear, as the director typically shoots the script out of sequence, repeats shots as needed, and puts them together through editing later. Filmmaking occurs in a variety of economic, social, and political contexts around the world, and uses a variety of technologies and cinematic techniques to make theatrical films, episodic films for television and streaming platforms, music videos, and promotional and educational films.

Gary Roger Rydstrom is an American sound designer and film director. He has been nominated for 20 Academy Awards for his work in sound for movies, winning 7.

Kevin O'Connell is a sound re-recording mixer. He held the record for most Academy Award nominations without a win at 20, until he finally won his first Academy Award for Hacksaw Ridge (2016) at the 89th Academy Awards in 2017.

The Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology (OIART) is a private career college in London, Ontario, Canada. The institute trains audio engineers for a variety of careers in music production, recording arts, audio engineering, sound recording and related fields. Founded in 1983 by engineer and producer Paul Steenhuis, the college focuses solely on sound. Graduates of the OIART program receive a Diploma in Audio Recording Technology.

Soundelux is an American audio post production company based in California, a previous member of the Todd Soundelux group of sound companies. The Soundelux library and trademark was bought in 2014 by Sounddogs. In 2021, original founders Bender and Stateman came together to launch the new Soundelux, which restarted in sound editing production with episodes of HBO's Euphoria.

Wylie Stateman is an American sound director, supervising sound editor, sound designer, and post production media entrepreneur. Stateman has supervised over 150 sound projects, resulting in 9 Academy Award nominations, 6 BAFTA Awards, 3 Primetime Emmy Awards, and over 30 Motion Picture Sound Editor Awards. He also received a Science Technology award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1994 for Audio Track’s Advanced Data Encoding (ADE) System. In 2021 he won an Emmy Award for his sound design in Netflix’s original series ‘The Queen’s Gambit’.

Lon Ethan Bender is an American supervising sound editor, business executive and inventor. Bender won the Academy Award for Best Sound Effects Editing for his work on Braveheart (1995). He has been recognized for numerous other industry awards as well, including Oscar nominations for The Revenant (2015), Drive (2011) and Blood Diamond (2006). Bender is the co-founder of post production sound services company Soundelux.

<i>Road to Hell</i> (film) 2008 American film

Road to Hell is a 2008 action-fantasy film directed by Albert Pyun. It was inspired by Walter Hill's Streets of Fire and began shooting that same year in June at Los Angeles. Pyun states that the genesis of Road to Hell began when he and Paré attended a film festival in Spain.

Gene S. Ruggiero was an American film editor. Originally a golf caddy at an exclusive New York country club, Ruggiero was fired from his job and later went to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer where he was assigned the job of editing. He was initially unhappy with his job and would often skip working to play golf, demoted to assistant editor due to this.

Tom Bellfort is a sound editor. He has done sound editing on over 80 films since 1983.

Dennis Leonard is a sound editor. He was nominated at the 77th Academy Awards for the film The Polar Express in the category of Best Sound Editing. His nomination was shared with Randy Thom.

Christopher Scarabosio is a sound editor who started working in sound on Gumby Adventures (1988) as a Sound Effects Assistant, and later as a Sound Editor on The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. He usually works at Skywalker Sound.

SoundStorm was an independent audio post-production and sound editorial company based in Burbank, California. It provided post-production sound design, sound editing and ADR in Hollywood. The editors recorded their sound effect library from 1984 to 2004, worked on more than eighty feature films, and earned a number of awards and nominations from the Academy Awards, Emmy Awards, British Academy Film Awards and Golden Reel Awards. In 2004, the company was dissolved and sold its assets; Soundogs.com Inc. acquired the trademark and complete archive of the SoundStorm sound effects library.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">David Acord</span> American sound editor and voice actor

David Acord is an American sound editor and voice actor best known for his contribution as a supervising sound editor of the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Acord received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing and British Academy Film Award for Best Sound for his work on The Force Awakens, with fellow sound editor Matthew Wood. He also provided the voice of several characters in the film, including the stormtrooper FN-2199. Though the voice role is minimal, the character gained considerable attention on the Internet following the film's release. Acord also had minor voice roles as an Imperial Male PA and two stormtroopers on episodes of Star Wars Rebels. Acord also voiced Grogu for the Disney Plus series The Mandalorian. In 2015, Acord was one of the sound designers for Disney Infinity video game. In 2020, he received his second Academy Award nomination for Best Sound Editing for 2019 film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, shared with Matthew Wood.
