The South Delta School District (SDSD) is a public school district based in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, USA.

Contents

The district serves all of Sharkey County, including the towns of Rolling Fork, Anguilla, and Cary, as well as the unincorporated areas of Delta City, Nitta Yuma, and Panther Burn. [2] It also serves most of Issaquena County, including the town of Mayersville, the unincorporated area of Valley Park, and most of the unincorporated area of Grace. [3]

Currently the district administration and the schools have differing sites, with the middle school being in Anguilla. [4] Previously the elementary school, the high school, and the district administration were on the same site in Rolling Fork. [5]

The High School Principal is Mr Adrian Dorsey. The Middle School Principal is Mr Mark Beechem. The Elementary School Principal is Ms Tonya Brown.

Demographics

There were 1,178 students enrolled in the district in the 2007–2008 school year. The racial makeup of the district was 96.01% African American, 3.31% White, and 0.68% Hispanic. 91.97% of the district's students were eligible to receive free lunch. [6]

The district, which is in one of the poorest regions in the United States, received $1.3 million in federal money in 2008 for programs to improve student achievement. [7]

Sports

At the High School, girls play softball, basketball and track, while boys play football, basketball, baseball and track. [8]

Discipline

Corporal punishment is administered unless parents request, by filling out a form, that it not be used on their student. In such a case, the student is suspended instead. [9] An oak or ash wood paddle is used. There is a maximum of five licks per paddling and it must be applied to "the fleshy part of the buttocks". At the elementary school the paddle is 14 inches long, two inches wide and one-quarter inch thick. The secondary school uses a paddle 15 inches long, two inches wide and 3/8 inch thick. [10]

Mississippi Highway 14 is a 145.4-mile-long (234.0 km) state highway that runs from west to east in the U.S. State of Mississippi. MS 14 serves the counties of Issaquena, Sharkey, Humphreys, Holmes, Attala, Winston, and Noxubee. MS 14 exists in two sections. Ray Brooks School was a K-12 school in unincorporated Bolivar County, Mississippi, near Benoit, and a part of the West Bolivar Consolidated School District. In September 2015 it had 214 students. Its namesake was its first principal, Ray Brooks; it was originally known as the Nugent Center School, and until 2014 was the only school of the Benoit School District, which served Benoit and Scott. Ray Brooks School closed in 2020.

Mississippi Highway 826 is a short state highway in western Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 61 south of Rolling Fork. The road then travels northward through farmland, and MS 826 ends at its intersection with MS 14, west of the town. The road was constructed in 1955 to bypass Rolling Fork, and the route was designated around 1957, after a proposal by Sharkey County to transfer the road to state maintenance.
