The Pan-American Team Handball Federation (PATHF) has been the continental governing body for handball, beach handball, wheelchair handball and snow handball in Americas since 23 May 1977. PATHF includes North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. PATHF's primary functions is to organize competitions for national teams and clubs, and to conduct Men's World Handball Championship and Women's World Handball Championship qualifying tournaments.
The Pan American Men's Handball Championship, also called PanAmericano, was the official competition for senior national handball teams of North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean. It took place every two years and was organized by the Pan-American Team Handball Federation. In addition to crowning the Pan-American champions, the tournament also served as a qualifying tournament for the IHF World Men's Handball Championship. In 2018, the PATHF was folded and the tournament was replaced with the South and Central American Championship and North America and Caribbean Championship.

The IHF Women's Handball World Championship has been organized by the International Handball Federation since 1957. European teams have won every time except 1995 where South Korea won as the first team outside Europe and 2013 where Brazil won as the first American team. The biggest winners are Russia and Norway with four titles each.
The Nor.Ca. Women's Handball Championship is the official competition for Women's national handball teams of North America and Caribbean. In addition to crowning the Nor.Ca. champions, the tournament also served as a qualifying tournament for the Pan American Handball Championship. Starting from the 2019 edition the tournament is a qualifying event for the IHF World Women's Handball Championship
The women's handball tournament at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada was held at the Exhibition Centre from July 16 to 24.
The Pan American Youth Beach Handball Championship was the official competition for men's and women's youth national beach handball teams of America. In addition to crowning the Pan American champions, the tournament also served as a qualifying tournament for the IHF Youth Beach Handball World Championship. Only two were held as in 2018, the PATHF disbanded and the tournaments were replaced with the North America & the Caribbean and South & Central American championships.
The 2018 South and Central American Women's Handball Championship was the first edition of the South and Central American Women's Handball Championship, which took place in Maceió, Brazil from 29 November to 4 December 2018. It acted as the South and Central American qualifying tournament for the 2019 World Women's Handball Championship.

The 2023 IHF World Women's Handball Championship will be 26th edition of the championship, organised by the International Handball Federation (IHF), from 30 November to 17 December 2023. to be jointly hosted by Denmark, Norway and Sweden. It will be the third time in handball history that the championship is jointly hosted, the first in Sweden, and also the first to be played in three countries.
The 2021 South and Central American Women's Handball Championship was the second edition of the championship and held from 5 to 9 October 2021 at Asunción, Paraguay under the aegis of South and Central America Handball Confederation. It was the first time in history that the championship is organised by the Paraguay Handball Confederation. It also acted as the qualification tournament for the 2021 World Women's Handball Championship, with the top three teams qualifying.
The 2022 South and Central American Women's Handball Championship was the third edition of the championship and held from 15 to 19 November 2022 at Buenos Aires, Argentina under the aegis of South and Central America Handball Confederation. It was the first time in history that the championship is organised by the Argentinean Handball Confederation and also acted as the qualification tournament for the 2023 World Women's Handball Championship, with the top two teams qualifying.
