Southwestern College is a private graduate institution in Santa Fe, New Mexico that specializes in counseling and art therapy. [2] It is the only college or university in the state of New Mexico to offer a Master's Degree in Art Therapy. [1]

History

Southwestern College traces its roots to the Quimby Metaphysical Library, a library which has a large collection of religious and metaphysical books, and manuscripts of American transcendentalist and the Father of the New Thought Movement, Phineas Parkhurst Quimby. The library was founded by Neva Dell Hunter in 1945 in Alamogordo, New Mexico. The library was eventually known as Quimby Memorial Library. The school's vision, mission, philosophy, and programs are also influenced by Rudolf Steiner, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Alice Bailey, perennial wisdom traditions, and Hindu scriptures. [3] In 1976, the center was rededicated as Quimby College by Robert Waterman, [4] with Hunter as the guest of honor. Hunter's ideas were used by Waterman in founding the core curriculum of the college and its programs. The college's initial intention was to train counselors who were well-versed and practiced in areas of spirituality and consciousness. In 1979, the college started to offer programs in Counseling. Quimby College later became Southwestern College. [5] [6]

In 1996, Southwestern College became accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, an independent corporation and one of two commission members of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. [1] In the same year, Dr. Marylou Butler became the school's second President. [7] In 1998, the college's Master of Arts in Art Therapy/Counseling was approved by the American Art Therapy Association. [8] In 2006, Dr. James Michael Nolan [9] was selected as the third president. [7] [10] Since 2006,the College tripled the size of its campus, built an Art Therapy building, created the Tierra Nueva Counseling Center, and launched professional certificate training in Human Sexuality, Infant Mental Health, and Interpersonal Neurobiology. It has also created scholarships for Native Americans and other minority candidates. In February 2019, Dr. Ann Filemyr was selected as the fourth president of the college.

Since 1980, Southwestern College has offered the "Transformation & Healing Conference" on its campus in Santa Fe.

Antioch University is a private university with multiple campuses in the United States and online programs. Founded in 1852 as Antioch College, its first president was politician, abolitionist, and education reformer Horace Mann. It changed its name to Antioch University in 1977 to reflect its growth across the country into numerous graduate education programs. It now operates four campuses located in three states, as well as an online division and the Graduate School of Leadership and Change. All campuses of the university are regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Santa Fe University of Art and Design

Santa Fe University of Art and Design (SFUAD) was a private, for-profit art school in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The university was built from the non-profit College of Santa Fe (CSF), a Catholic facility founded as St. Michael's College in 1859, and renamed the College of Santa Fe in 1966. After financial difficulties in 2009, the college closed and the campus was purchased by the City of Santa Fe, the State of New Mexico, and Laureate Education, and reopened with a narrowed focus on film, theater, graphic design and fine arts. As Santa Fe University of Art and Design it became a secular college of 950 students. The university closed in May 2018, due to significant ongoing financial challenges.

Tom Joyce American sculptor

Tom Joyce is a sculptor and MacArthur Fellow known for his work in forged steel and cast iron. Using skills and technology acquired through early training as a blacksmith, Joyce addresses the environmental, political, and social implications of using iron in his work. Exhibited internationally since the 1980s, his work is included in 30-plus public collections in the U.S. and abroad. Joyce works from studios in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and since 2012, in Brussels, Belgium, producing sculpture, drawings, prints, photographs, and videos that reference themes of iron in the human body, iron in industry, and iron in nature.
