Sovereign Communications, LLC [1] is an American radio broadcasting company which owns seven radio stations in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, with offices in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. [2] [3] [4] The company is owned and operated by William C. Gleich and Tim Sabean. [5]

After their February 2010 purchase of 11 stations from Northern Star Broadcasting, the company holds "something close to a local monopoly" on radio stations in the Sault Ste. Marie region. [6] [7] [8] The transaction was publicly valued at $3,425,000 in cash. [5] Several Northern Star employees (both on-air and in management) lost their jobs as a result of the purchase. As well, 97.9 WIHC out of Newberry, Michigan went dark that same month after not being purchased from Northern Star in the deal, only returning two years later under new ownership. [6] [9] At present, Sovereign Communications owns every locally produced, non-simulcasted FM station in the Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan market, except for the two classic hits stations owned by Darby Advertising under their "Radio Eagle" format (WUPN & WMJT).

In May 2007, the company started the WSOO Scholarship, available to a student at Lake Superior State University with a "demonstrated interest and involvement in communication". To qualify for the scholarship, the student must be a resident of the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and preference is given to applicants who graduated from a Chippewa County high school. The WSOO scholarship covers "full tuition and required fees" at the university for one year. [10]

It is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, which provides certain services to ABC affiliate WGTU and Sault Ste. Marie–licensed full-time satellite WGTQ under a local marketing agreement (LMA) with Cunningham Broadcasting. However, Sinclair effectively owns WGTU/WGTQ as the majority of Cunningham's stock is owned by the family of deceased group founder Julian Smith. Both stations share studios on M-72 just west of Traverse City, while WPBN-TV's transmitter is located east of Kalkaska, Michigan. CFYN was a Canadian AM radio station, which broadcast at 1050 kHz in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, from 1977 to 1992. From 1934 to 1977, the station broadcast with the call sign CJIC.

WKNW is a news/talk radio station serving Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. The station is the only dedicated privately owned news/talk station in the market, save for its tenure as an ESPN Radio affiliate from 2010 to 2022. According to past editions of the Broadcasting Yearbook, the station went on the air as WKNW in August 1990, after briefly holding the callsigns WBPW and WDHP before launch. The station was popularly known as KNOW AM in the 1990s, which alluded to its news/talk format, and also served as an antonym to sister station WYSS' Yes FM branding.

Ellis, through licensee TSE Broadcasting LLC. WUPN broadcasts a classic hits format to the Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, area.

The Adams Building, also known as the Central Savings Bank Building, was built as a commercial and office building located at 418 Ashmun Street in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Along with the next-door Gowan Block, it is now part of the Park Place City Center, a mixed commercial and residential development. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
