Speed Caravan is a World music band from France and Algeria. Their music combines Ma'luf, Folktronica and Rock amongst others.
The band was founded in 2005 by half-Algerian half-French Oud-player Mehdi Haddab and bass player Pascal « Pasco » Teillet. [1] The band was later on supplemented by keyboard player Hermione Frank – who already played with Mehdi Haddab in the Band Ekova. [1]
About founding and naming the band, Mehdi Haddab said in 2008:
At the beginning, I decided to create this trio with Pascal Teillet and Hermione Frank to have a repertoire . It was three years ago and it corresponds to the moment when I started systematically playing the electric lute... At that time, with Pasco we saw each other several evenings a week, we sometimes worked until nine in the morning, we were partying, we were making music… We spend a year like that and we built something in this whirlwind of creation. During that time, Speed Caravan played gigs at the festival Solidays in 2006 and 2007.
Speed Caravan released their debut album Kalashnik Love in 2008, cooperating with various artists such as MC Spex from Asian Dub Foundation, Rachid Taha und Rodolphe Burger. [1] [2] The album includes two cover versions, namely Galvanize from the Chemical Brothers and Killing an Arab from The Cure, the latter dealing with the plot of the novel The Stranger from Albert Camus. The band appeared on the festival Fnac Indétendances in the Paris Plage as a support act of Keziah Jones.
The second album Big Blue Desert from 2016 is a hommage to Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, who made a deep impression on Mehdi Haddab during the latter's childhood. [3] Tours corresponding to that album lead the band all the way to the festival The Spirit of Tengri in Almaty in Kazackstan in 2017. [4]
Speed Caravan's third album Nuba Nova was recorded in 2020 together with Hamdi Benani, who took over the vocals. [5] As the name of that album may suggest, the music is a Folktronic interpretation of Andalusi nubah. Hamdi Benani did not live to see the release of the album [6] in June 2021, [7] so that the album may partially be seen as an obituary to the white angel, who had been present in the Algerian music scene for decades.
Tinariwen is a collective of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara region of northern Mali. Considered pioneers of desert blues, the group's guitar-driven style combines traditional Tuareg and African music with Western rock music. They have released nine albums since their formation and have toured internationally.
Rachid Taha was an Algerian singer and activist based in France described as "sonically adventurous". His music was influenced by many different styles including rock, electronic, punk and raï.
Tunisia is a North African country with a predominantly Arabic-speaking population. The country is best known for malouf, a kind of music imported from Andalusia after the Moors expulsion in the 15th century. Though in its modern form, malouf is likely very dissimilar to any music played more than four centuries ago, it does have its roots in Spain and Portugal, and is closely related to genres with a similar history throughout North Africa, including malouf's Libyan cousin, Algerian gharnati and Moroccan ala or Andalusi. During the Ottoman era, malouf was influenced by Turkish music. However, Tunisian repertoires, styles and also instruments remain distinctive – the ʻūd tūnsī is an emblematic case. This is a close relative of the 'uds associated with Algeria and also Morocco.

Gharnati refers to an Algerian variety of Andalusian classical music originating in Tlemcen. Its name is derived from the Arabic name of the city of Granada. Gharnati has also become an established tradition in other cities in western Algeria, such as Oran and Sidi-Bel-Abbès. In the 20th century it also spread to Morocco after being brought over by Algerian families who moved there fleeing French colonial rule in Algeria, and eventually founding conservatories in cities like Oujda and Rabat.
Raymond Leyris better known as Cheikh Raymond, was a renowned Algerian Jewish musician. He specialized in Andalusian music of Eastern Algeria and was an expert virtuoso player of oud and singer with an exceptional vocal range and widely respected by both Jews and Muslims and given the title of Cheikh (elder) as Cheikh Raymond with the accompanying fame and respect.
Hamdi Makhlouf, born on 5 June 1980 in Tunis, an oud player, vocalist, composer and a musicologist. Focusing on jazz and world music, Hamdi Makhlouf researches musical creation and Arabic modern composition.
Gaspard Wuta Mayi, commonly known as Wuta Mayi, is a Congolese rumba and soukous vocalist and composer from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). From 1974 to 1982, he was a member of the band TPOK Jazz, led by Franco, which dominated the Congolese music scene from the 1960s through the 1980s. Since leaving TPOK Jazz he has recorded and performed as a solo artist, in addition to being one of the four members of the "supergroup" Les Quatre Etoiles, and subsequently a member of Kékélé.
