Private schools in the United Kingdom are schools that require fees for admission and enrollment. Some have financial endowments, most are governed by a board of governors, and are owned by a mixture of corporations, trusts and private individuals. They are independent of many of the regulations and conditions that apply to state-funded schools. For example, the schools do not have to follow the National Curriculum, although many such schools do.

High Spen is an old mining village in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, historically part of County Durham. There is an entrance to Chopwell Wood, whose Christmas Trees sales attract many visitors to the village every year. High Spen has one pub, called The Bute Arms, and one Working Men's Club. There is also a micro pub called Wigs. There is also a primary school, called High Spen Primary School. High Spen also is home to St Patrick's C of E Church.

In 2013 the school was sponsored to become an academy as part of its ongoing partnership with King Ecgbert School in Sheffield, with Lesley Bowes assuming the role of executive headteacher.

It opened with just 4 year groups and these are working their way through the school, in September 2020 the oldest students had entered the first year nine. The school is somewhat unusual in teaching German as the first foreign language.
