St George's School is a private, Roman Catholic, co-educational school in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei-Muara, Brunei. It was established in 1937. [3]

History

George Newn Ah Foott was adamant that education might give the many populations in Brunei Town, a brighter future. Newn took the initiative to open Saint George's School after seeing the lack of educational options and schools in the area. Fr. Piet de Wit, a local priest, first established the school in a house on Jalan Padang that Mr. Kay leased. In addition, this home housed the priest's residence and a chapel. Thanks to Newn's donation of land, the school was able to construct its first dedicated structure in Kumbang Pasang in 1941. Following World War II's interruptions, the school was reopened under Newn's leadership, with his daughters acting as instructors. Later, the school was named after him as a sign of respect. [4]

In contrast to the contemporary concrete structures it now enjoys, Saint George's School was a modest thatch building with an attap roof in its early years. It became one of Brunei's most prominent schools as it grew over time to provide instruction up to the GCE "O" Level. In 1972, Newn received the Papal Decoration "Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice" in honour of his contributions to Saint George's School and his services to the Catholic Church. [4]

A member of the Bruneian royal family, he was the father of Pengiran Anak Saleha, the queen consort of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. The Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien College (SOASC), natively known as Maktab Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien (MSOAS), is a government boys' secondary school in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. It is the first English secondary school in the country. The school is also one of the only three boys' secondary schools nationwide, with the other two being Muda Hashim Secondary School and Ma'had Islam Brunei. The school provides five years of secondary education leading up to GCE 'O' Level and IGCSE qualification.

Formerly known as Padang Besar, the park underwent renovations in 1983 and was renamed in honour of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III. <span class="mw-page-title-main">State Secretary of Brunei</span> Former head of administrative affairs of Brunei

The State Secretary was established to manage Brunei’s internal administrative functions and support the Menteri Besar. Reserved for Malay Muslims, the position became a key figure under the 1959 Constitution, overseeing departmental coordination, advising the Sultan of Brunei, and holding a seat in the Council of Ministers. The State Secretary's office was located at the Secretariat Building in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Ong Boon Pang was a Bruneian aristocrat, businessman, and Kapitan Cina who made important contributions to the Chinese community, especially in the areas of education and urban planning. He was dedicated to education, as evidenced by his efforts in establishing Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan, the country's first Chinese school. He organised the Overseas Chinese Mutual Help Association, serving as its president and providing support to local Chinese residents in their daily lives.
