The Brunei History Centre (PSB; Malay : Pusat Sejarah Brunei) is a government institution which conducts research, documentation, publication and dissemination on matters pertaining to the history of Brunei. [1] It was established in 1982 by the consent of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah as an institute of historical research on Brunei for the benefit of the Bruneian people. [2] The head of Brunei History Centre is a Principal (Malay : Pengetua), which was held by Mohd. Jamil Al-Sufri until his death on 4 March 2021. [3] The current Principal of Brunei History Centre is Dr. Hadi bin Melayong, another well known historian and long time deputy and acting Principal of Brunei History Centre. It is a government department under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. [4]

History

The Brunei History Centre was established on 26 January 1982 by the Consent of His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to conduct research and dissemination on the history of Brunei for the benefit of the people in the country. [4] [5] Initially, the Centre was housed in the main branch of the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Library at Jalan Elizabeth II, Bandar Seri Begawan. [4] [5] In 1985, it was moved to the building at Jalan Stoney which was formerly the then Department of Education (Malay : Jabatan Pelajaran). In 1988, the Centre finally moved to the present building at Jalan James Pearce. [4] [5]

Sultan Sharīf ʿAlī ibn Sharīf ʿAjlān ibn Sharīf Rumaithah ibn Sharīf Muḥammad Al Akbar, also known as Blessed Ali, was the fourth Sultan of Brunei and son-in-law of the third Sultan of Brunei, Ahmad. He was also a scholar of Arab descent, originating from Ta'if, Sharifate of Mecca, present-day Saudi Arabia.

Abdul Kahar Jalilul Alam ibni Bolkiah Shah Alam, posthumously known as Marhum Keramat, was the seventh Sultan of Brunei. He was reputed to possess supernatural abilities and be a devout man (berkeramat). He reigned from 1524 until stepping down from the throne in 1530 to allow his nephew and adopted-son Saiful Rijal to become Sultan. Additionally, he was known as Siripada by Antonio Pigafetta in 1521.

Sulaiman al-Qanuni ibni Sharif Ali, also known as Senior King and Adipati Agung, was the fifth Sultan of Brunei, according to Silsilah Raja-Raja Berunai. He succeeded his father in 1432 and ruled until his abdication in 1485, to allow his son Bolkiah to become Sultan.

The school provides five years of secondary education leading up to GCE 'O' Level and IGCSE qualification.

The Istana Darussalam is the former residence of Omar Ali Saifuddien III and birthplace of Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah.
